Non-equilibrium dynamic hyperuniform states

Disordered hyperuniform structures are an exotic state of matter having suppressed density fluctuations at large length-scale similar to perfect crystals and quasicrystals but without any long range orientational order. In the past decade, an increasing number of non-equilibrium systems were found to have dynamic hyperuniform states, which have emerged as a new research direction coupling both non-equilibrium physics and hyperuniformity. Here we review the recent progress in understanding dynamic hyperuniform states found in various non-equilibrium systems, including the critical hyperuniformity in absorbing phase transitions, non-equilibrium hyperuniform fluids and the hyperuniform structures in phase separating systems via spinodal decomposition.

Equilibrium states corresponding to targeted hyperuniform nonequilibrium pair statistics

The Zhang-Torquato conjecture [G. Zhang and S. Torquato, Phys. Rev. E, 2020, 101, 032124.] states that any realizable pair correlation function g₂(r) or structure factor S(k) of a translationally invariant nonequilibrium system can be attained by an equilibrium ensemble involving only (up to) effective two-body interactions. To further test and study this conjecture, we consider two singular nonequilibrium models of recent interest that also have the exotic hyperuniformity property: a 2D "perfect glass" and a 3D critical absorbing-state model. We find that each nonequilibrium target can be achieved accurately by equilibrium states with effective one- and two-body potentials, lending further support to the conjecture. To characterize the structural degeneracy of such a nonequilibrium-equilibrium correspondence, we compute higher-order statistics for both models, as well as those for a hyperuniform 3D uniformly randomized lattice (URL), whose higher-order statistics can be very precisely ascertained. Interestingly, we find that the differences in the higher-order statistics between nonequilibrium and equilibrium systems with matching pair statistics, as measured by the "hole" probability distribution, provide measures of the degree to which a system is out of equilibrium. We show that all three systems studied possess the bounded-hole property and that holes near the maximum hole size in the URL are much rarer than those in the underlying simple cubic lattice. Remarkably, upon quenching, the effective potentials for all three systems possess local energy minima (i.e., inherent structures) with stronger forms of hyperuniformity compared to their target counterparts. Our methods are expected to facilitate the self-assembly of tunable hyperuniform soft-matter systems.

Barrier-controlled nonequilibrium criticality in reactive particle systems

Nonequilibrium critical phenomena generally exist in many dynamic systems, like chemical reactions and some driven-dissipative reactive particle systems. Here, by using computer simulation and theoretical analysis, we demonstrate the crucial role of the activation barrier on the criticality of dynamic phase transitions in a minimal reactive hard-sphere model. We find that at zero thermal noise, with increasing the activation barrier, the type of transition changes from a continuous conserved directed percolation into a discontinuous dynamic transition by crossing a tricritical point. A mean-field theory combined with field simulation is proposed to explain this phenomenon. The possibility of Ising-type criticality in the nonequilibrium system at finite thermal noise is also discussed.

Cloaking the underlying long-range order of randomly perturbed lattices

Random, uncorrelated displacements of particles on a lattice preserve the hyperuniformity of the original lattice, that is, normalized density fluctuations vanish in the limit of infinite wavelengths. In addition to a diffuse contribution, the scattering intensity from the the resulting point pattern typically inherits the Bragg peaks (long-range order) of the original lattice. Here we demonstrate how these Bragg peaks can be hidden in the effective diffraction pattern of independent and identically distributed perturbations. All Bragg peaks vanish if and only if the sum of all probability densities of the positions of the shifted lattice points is a constant at all positions. The underlying long-range order is then "cloaked" in the sense that it cannot be reconstructed from the pair correlation function alone. On the one hand, density fluctuations increase monotonically with the strength of perturbations a, as measured by the hyperuniformity order metric Λ[over ¯]. On the other hand, the disappearance and reemergence of long-range order, depending on whether the system is cloaked as the perturbation strength increases, is manifestly captured by the τ order metric. Therefore, while the perturbation strength a may seem to be a natural choice for an order metric of perturbed lattices, the τ order metric is a superior choice. It is noteworthy that cloaked perturbed lattices allow one to easily simulate very large samples (with at least 10^{6} particles) of disordered hyperuniform point patterns without Bragg peaks.

Hydrodynamics of random-organizing hyperuniform fluids

Disordered hyperuniform structures are locally random while uniform like crystals at large length scales. Recently, an exotic hyperuniform fluid state was found in several nonequilibrium systems, while the underlying physics remains unknown. In this work, we propose a nonequilibrium (driven-dissipative) hard-sphere model and formulate a hydrodynamic theory based on Navier-Stokes equations to uncover the general mechanism of the fluidic hyperuniformity (HU). At a fixed density, this model system undergoes a smooth transition from an absorbing state to an active hyperuniform fluid and then, to the equilibrium fluid by changing the dissipation strength. We study the criticality of the absorbing-phase transition. We find that the origin of fluidic HU can be understood as the damping of a stochastic harmonic oscillator in q space, which indicates that the suppressed long-wavelength density fluctuation in the hyperuniform fluid can exhibit as either acoustic (resonance) mode or diffusive (overdamped) mode. Importantly, our theory reveals that the damping dissipation and active reciprocal interaction (driving) are the two ingredients for fluidic HU. Based on this principle, we further demonstrate how to realize the fluidic HU in an experimentally accessible active spinner system and discuss the possible realization in other systems.
