Taming intrinsic localized modes in a DNA lattice with damping, external force, and inhomogeneity

Standing Solitons Tuned by Impurities in Damped Nonlinear Lattices under External Excitation

Periodic chains of nonlinear oscillators are known to support solitonic solutions within a specific range of physical parameters when damping effect is considered. This Letter investigates the dynamics of stationary solitons in damped nonlinear lattices under external excitation, focusing on the influence of impurities related to the natural frequency of the oscillators. We demonstrate experimentally and numerically that incorporating impurities into externally driven periodic lattices can expand the solitonic stability diagram under high-damping areas and near the Hopf bifurcation of periodic structures. A mathematical description that closely aligns with experimental realities is presented through the disordered damped nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Specifically, we prove how impurities along the chain can spontaneously nucleate the lattice solitons. The obtained results open the way toward the functionalization of disorder to control nonlinear energy localization in damped nonperiodic structures.

Experimental study of intrinsic localized mode mobility in a cyclic, balanced, 1D nonlinear transmission line

Mobile intrinsic localized modes (ILMs) in balanced nonlinear capacitive-inductive cyclic transmission lines are studied by experiment, using a spatiotemporal driver under damped steady-state conditions. Without nonlinear balance, the experimentally observed resonance between the traveling ILM and normal modes of the nonlinear transmission line generates lattice drag via the production of a lattice backwave. In our experimental study of a balanced running ILM in a steady state, it is observed that the fundamental resonance can be removed over extended, well-defined driving frequency intervals and strongly suppressed over the complete ILM driving frequency range. Because both of these nonlinear capacitive and inductive elements display hysteresis our observation demonstrates that the experimental system, which is only partially self-dual, is surprisingly tolerant, regarding the precision necessary to eliminate the ILM backwave. It appears that simply balancing the cell dual nonlinearities makes the ILM envelope shape essentially the same at the two locations in the cell, so that the effective lattice discreteness seen by the ILM nearly vanishes.

Using coupling imperfection to control amplitude death

Previous studies of nonlinear oscillator networks have shown that amplitude death (AD) occurs after tuning oscillator parameters and coupling properties. Here, we identify regimes where the opposite occurs and show that a local defect (or impurity) in network connectivity leads to AD suppression in situations where identically coupled oscillators cannot. The critical impurity strength value leading to oscillation restoration is an explicit function of network size and system parameters. In contrast to homogeneous coupling, network size plays a crucial role in reducing this critical value. This behavior can be traced back to the steady-state destabilization through a Hopf's bifurcation, which occurs for impurity strengths below this threshold. This effect is illustrated across different mean-field coupled networks and is supported by simulations and theoretical analysis. Since local inhomogeneities are ubiquitous and often unavoidable, such imperfections can be an unexpected source of oscillation control.

Forward and backward propagating breathers in a DNA model with dipole-dipole long-range interactions

The present study explores the existence and orbital stability of discrete bright breathers through the Joyeux-Buyukdagli DNA model incorporating long-range interactions (LRIs). The nonlinear Schrödinger equation is derived from a semidiscrete approximation and subsequently used to construct the targeted initial condition for numerical computations of the discrete breather. It appears that the interplay between the carrier wave frequency and the LRI induces stationary forward or backward propagating waves. For critical values of the LRI, stationary waves can occur out of the center/edge of the first Brillouin zone. The predicted breathers differ in their robustness and mobility for specific carrier-wave frequency and LRI. In all cases, semianalytical predictions agree with numerical simulations.
