Small atomic displacements recorded in bismuth by the optical reflectivity of femtosecond laser-pulse excitations

Ultrafast Generation of Coherent Phonons in Two-Dimensional Bismuthene

Coherent phonons generated through regulation of lattice oscillation via ultrafast laser pulses or X-rays have been desired in various fields, including optoelectronics, thermal and quantum information, and communications. Phonon coherence of two-dimensional (2D) materials is particularly attractive as it enables controllable information transmission but is challenging as the weak interplanar coupling makes phonon excitation extremely difficult. Herein we managed to generate size-dependent phonon coherence from bulk Bi to few-layer bismuthene by an ultrafast femtosecond laser pulse and made a systematic comparison thorough a combination of computation, transient absorption, and reflectance spectroscopic methods. The results witnessed the A_1g phonon excitation in all of the three Bi materials with distinct thicknesses, and the quantum size effect of 2D materials caused phonon confinement and eventual bond softening manifested as a red-shifted vibration frequency and shortened decoherence time compared with those of their bulk counterpart. This study offers new perspectives for tailoring coherent phonons in 2D materials for quantum science and technology including quantum communication, computing, and design of novel quantum devices, etc.

Thickness-dependent carrier and phonon dynamics of topological insulator Bi2Te3 thin films

As a new quantum state of matter, topological insulators offer a new platform for exploring new physics, giving rise to fascinating new phenomena and new devices. Lots of novel physical properties of topological insulators have been studied extensively and are attributed to the unique electron-phonon interactions at the surface. Although electron behavior in topological insulators has been studied in detail, electron-phonon interactions at the surface of topological insulators are less understood. In this work, using optical pump-optical probe technology, we performed transient absorbance measurement on Bi₂Te₃ thin films to study the dynamics of its hot carrier relaxation process and coherent phonon behavior. The excitation and dynamics of phonon modes are observed with a response dependent on the thickness of the samples. The thickness-dependent characteristic time, amplitude and frequency of the damped oscillating signals are acquired by fitting the signal profiles. The results clearly indicate that the electron-hole recombination process gradually become dominant with the increasing thickness which is consistent with our theoretical calculation. In addition, a frequency modulation phenomenon on the high-frequency oscillation signals induced by coherent optical phonons is observed.

Coherent optical phonon oscillation and possible electronic softening in WTe2 crystals

A rapidly-growing interest in WTe2 has been triggered by the giant magnetoresistance effect discovered in this unique system. While many efforts have been made towards uncovering the electron- and spin-relevant mechanisms, the role of lattice vibration remains poorly understood. Here, we study the coherent vibrational dynamics in WTe2 crystals by using ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy. The oscillation signal in time domain in WTe2 has been ascribed as due to the coherent dynamics of the lowest energy A1 optical phonons with polarization- and wavelength-dependent measurements. With increasing temperature, the phonon energy decreases due to anharmonic decay of the optical phonons into acoustic phonons. Moreover, a significant drop (15%) of the phonon energy with increasing pump power is observed which is possibly caused by the lattice anharmonicity induced by electronic excitation and phonon-phonon interaction.

Topological engineering of glass for modulating chemical state of dopants

A novel approach to modulating the chemical state of dopants by engineering the topological features of a glass matrix is presented. The method allows selective stabilization of dopants on a wide range of length scales, from dispersed ions to aggregated clusters to nanoparticles, leading to various intriguing optical phenomena, such as great emission enhancement and ultra-broadband optical amplification.

Real-time observation of interlayer vibrations in bilayer and few-layer graphene

We report real-time observation of the interlayer shearing mode, corresponding to the lateral oscillation of graphene planes, for bi- and few-layer graphene. Using a femtosecond pump-probe technique, we have followed coherent oscillations of this vibrational mode directly in the time domain. The shearing-mode frequency, as expected for an interlayer mode, exhibits a strong and systematic dependence on the number of layers, varying from 1.32 THz for the bulk limit to 0.85 THz for bilayer graphene. We explored the role of interactions with the external environment on this vibrational mode by comparing the response observed for graphene layers supported by different substrates and suspended in free space. No significant frequency shifts were observed.

Quasiparticle dynamics and phonon softening in FeSe superconductors

Quasiparticle dynamics of FeSe single crystals revealed by dual-color transient reflectivity measurements (ΔR/R) provides unprecedented information on Fe-based superconductors. The amplitude of the fast component in ΔR/R clearly gives a competing scenario between spin fluctuations and superconductivity. Together with the transport measurements, the relaxation time analysis further exhibits anomalous changes at 90 and 230 K. The former manifests a structure phase transition as well as the associated phonon softening. The latter suggests a previously overlooked phase transition or crossover in FeSe. The electron-phonon coupling constant λ is found to be 0.16, identical to the value of theoretical calculations. Such a small λ demonstrates an unconventional origin of superconductivity in FeSe.
