Abstract
We present analytical results of the fundamental properties of the one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard model with a repulsive interaction. The new model results with arbitrary external fields include: (I) using the exact solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations of the Hubbard model, we first rigorously calculate the gapless spin and charge excitations, exhibiting exotic features of fractionalized spinons and holons. We then investigate the gapped excitations in terms of the spin string and thek-Λstring bound states at arbitrary driving fields, showing subtle differences in spin magnons and chargeη-pair excitations. (II) For a high-density and high spin magnetization region, i.e. near the quadruple critical point, we further analytically obtain the thermodynamic properties, dimensionless ratios and scaling functions near quantum phase transitions. (III) Importantly, we give the general scaling functions at quantum criticality for arbitrary filling and interaction strength. These can directly apply to other integrable models. (IV) Based on the fractional excitations and the scaling laws, the spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid (SILL) with only the charge propagation mode is elucidated by the asymptotic of the two-point correlation functions with the help of conformal field theory. We also, for the first time, obtain the analytical results of the thermodynamics for the SILL. (V) Finally, to capture deeper insights into the Mott insulator and interaction-driven criticality, we further study the double occupancy and propose its associated contact and contact susceptibilities, through which an adiabatic cooling scheme based upon quantum criticality is proposed. In this scenario, we build up general relations among arbitrary external- and internal-potential-driven quantum phase transitions, providing a comprehensive understanding of quantum criticality. Our methods offer rich perspectives of quantum integrability and offer promising guidance for future experiments with interacting electrons and ultracold atoms, both with and without a lattice.

Abstract
We review the concepts and the present state of theoretical studies of spin-imbalanced superfluidity, in particular the elusive Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, in the context of ultracold quantum gases. The comprehensive presentation of the theoretical basis for the FFLO state that we provide is useful also for research on the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity in other physical systems. We focus on settings that have been predicted to be favourable for the FFLO state, such as optical lattices in various dimensions and spin-orbit coupled systems. These are also the most likely systems for near-future experimental observation of the FFLO state. Theoretical bounds, such as Bloch's and Luttinger's theorems, and experimentally important limitations, such as finite-size effects and trapping potentials, are considered. In addition, we provide a comprehensive review of the various ideas presented for the observation of the FFLO state. We conclude our review with an analysis of the open questions related to the FFLO state, such as its stability, superfluid density, collective modes and extending the FFLO superfluid concept to new types of lattice systems.

Abstract
The recent development of experimental techniques in ultracold atomic Fermi gases is extremely helpful in the progress of the realization of the unconventional Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superfluid phase in quasi-one dimensional systems (Liao et al 2010 Nature 467 567). Due to a Fermi surface nesting, which is enhanced in 1D, the low-dimensional systems are particularly good candidates to find the FFLO phase stable. We investigate the influence of a dimensional crossover (from one dimension (1D) to two dimensions (2D) or three dimensions (3D)) on the stability of the FFLO state in the spin-imbalanced attractive Hubbard model.

Abstract
Understanding novel pairings in attractive degenerate Fermi gases is crucial for exploring rich superfluid physics. In this report, we reveal unconventional pairings induced by spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in a one-dimensional optical lattice, using a state-of-the-art density-matrix renormalization group method. When both bands are partially occupied, we find a strong competition between the interband Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) and intraband Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) pairings. In particular, for the weak and moderate SOC strengths, these two pairings can coexist, giving rise to a new phase called the FFLO-BCS phase, which exhibits a unique three-peak structure in pairing momentum distribution. For the strong SOC strength, the intraband BCS pairing always dominates in the whole parameter regime, including the half filling. We figure out the whole phase diagrams as functions of filling factor, SOC strength, and Zeeman field. Our results are qualitatively different from recent mean-field predictions. Finally, we address that our predictions could be observed in a weaker trapped potential.

Abstract
We study the sudden expansion of spin-imbalanced ultracold lattice fermions with attractive interactions in one dimension after turning off the longitudinal confining potential. We show that the momentum distribution functions of majority and minority fermions quickly approach stationary values due to a quantum distillation mechanism that results in a spatial separation of pairs and majority fermions. As a consequence, Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) correlations are lost during the expansion. Furthermore, we argue that the shape of the stationary momentum distribution functions can be understood by relating them to the integrals of motion in this integrable quantum system. We discuss our results in the context of proposals to observe FFLO correlations, related to recent experiments by Liao et al., Nature (London) 467, 567 (2010).

Abstract
We investigate the long distance asymptotics of various correlation functions for the one-dimensional spin-1/2 Fermi gas with attractive interactions using the dressed charge formalism. In the spin polarized phase, these correlation functions exhibit spatial oscillations with a power-law decay whereby their critical exponents are found through conformal field theory. We show that spatial oscillations of the leading terms in the pair correlation function and the spin correlation function solely depend on [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], respectively. Here [Formula: see text] denotes the mismatch between the Fermi surfaces of spin-up and spin-down fermions. Such spatial modulations are characteristics of a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state. Our key observation is that backscattering among the Fermi points of bound pairs and unpaired fermions results in a one-dimensional analog of the FFLO state and displays a microscopic origin of the FFLO nature. Furthermore, we show that the pair correlation function in momentum space has a peak at the point of mismatch between both Fermi surfaces [Formula: see text], which has recently been observed in numerous numerical studies.

Abstract
We present real-space dynamical mean-field theory calculations for attractively interacting fermions in three-dimensional lattices with elongated traps. The critical polarization is found to be 0.8, regardless of the trap elongation. Below the critical polarization, we find unconventional superfluid structures where the polarized superfluid and Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov-type states emerge across the entire core region.

Abstract
In this Letter we consider a spin-imbalanced two-component attractive Fermi gas loaded in a 1D optical lattice in the presence of an harmonic confining potential. We propose that the observation of the change in the double occupancy with respect to a lattice depth modulation can provide clear evidence of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase. Simulating the time evolution of the system, we can characterize the double occupancy spectrum for different initial conditions. In particular, we numerically observe a striking narrowing of the width of the spectrum for increasing imbalance. Using Bethe-ansatz equations in the strongly interacting limit, we show that the width relates directly to the FFLO wave vector q.

Abstract
We investigate one dimensional attractive Fermi gases in spin-dependent optical lattices. We show that three-body bound states--"trimers"--exist as soon as the two tunneling rates are different. We calculate the binding energy and the effective mass of a single trimer. We then show numerically that for finite and commensurate densities n(up) = n(down)/2 an energy gap appears, implying that the gas is a one-component Luttinger liquid of trimers with suppressed superfluid correlations. The boundaries of this novel phase are given. We discuss experimental situations to test our predictions.

Abstract
We consider two-component one-dimensional quantum gases with a density imbalance. While generically such fluids are two-component Luttinger liquids, we show that if the ratio of the densities is a rational number, p/q, and mass asymmetry between components is sufficiently strong, one of the two eigenmodes acquires a gap. The gapped phase corresponds to (algebraic) ordering of (p+q)-particle composites. In particular, for attractive mixtures, this implies that the superconducting correlations are destroyed. We illustrate our predictions by numerical simulations of the fermionic Hubbard model with hopping asymmetry.

Abstract
The imbalanced superfluid state of spin- 1/2 fermions with s-wave pairing is numerically studied by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation at zero temperature in an annular disk geometry with narrow radial width. Two distinct types of systems are considered. The first case may be relevant to heavy fermion superconductors, where magnetic field causes spin imbalance via Zeeman interaction and the system is studied in a grand canonical ensemble. As the magnetic field increases, the system is transformed from the uniform superfluid state to the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state, and finally to the spin polarized normal state. The second case may be relevant to cold fermionic systems, where the number of fermions of each species is fixed as in a canonical ensemble. In this case, the ground state depends on the pairing strength. For weak pairing, the order parameter exhibits a periodic domain wall lattice pattern with a localized spin distribution at low spin imbalance, and a sinusoidally modulated pattern with extended spin distribution at high spin imbalance. For strong pairing, the phase separation between the superfluid state and polarized normal state is found to be preferable, while the increase of spin imbalance simply changes the ratio between them.

Abstract
We study the pair correlations of a spin-imbalanced two-leg ladder with attractive interactions, using the density matrix renormalization group method. We identify regions in the phase diagram spanned by the chemical potential and the magnetic field that can harbor Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov- (FFLO-)like physics. Results for the pair structure factor, exhibiting multiple pairing wave vectors, substantiate the presence of FFLO-like correlations. We further discuss phase separation scenarios induced by a harmonic trap, which differ from the case of isolated chains.

Abstract
We address an imbalanced two-component atomic Fermi gas restricted by a one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice and an external harmonic potential, within the mean-field Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism. We show that characteristic features of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state are visible in the rf spectra and in the momentum-resolved photoemission spectra of the gas. Specially, Andreev states or midgap states can be clearly resolved, which gives a direct experimentally observable signature of the oscillating order parameter.
