Atomic nanowires on the Pt/Ge(001) surface: buried Pt-Ge versus top Pt-Pt chains

Structural stability and electronic properties of alkaline-earth metal induced Si(111)-(3 × 2) surfaces

Alkaline-earth metal (Ca, Sr and Ba) induced Si(111)-(3 × 2) honeycomb chain-channel (HCC) surfaces have been systematically studied by means of ab initio calculations.

Gold deposited on a Ge(0 0 1) surface: DFT calculations

The atomic geometry, stability and electronic properties of self-organized Au induced nanowires on a Ge(0 0 1) surface are investigated based on the density-functional theory in the generalized gradient approximation and the stoichiometry of Au. According to the formation energy and the simulated STM image, the Ge atoms substituted by the Au atoms have been confirmed as occurring at a Au coverage lower than 0.25 Ml. The STM image with single and double dimer vacancies looks like the Au atoms have penetrated the subsurface. The energetically favorable dimer-row arrayed structures at 0.50 Ml and 0.75 Ml Au coverages have a 4  ×  1, 4  ×  2 or c(8  ×  2) transition symmetry, which comprise a flat Au-Au homodimer row and an alternating various buckling phase Ge-Ge or Au-Ge dimer row. The c(8  ×  2) zigzag-shaped protruding chains of shallow-groove STM images are highly consistent with the observations, but a long-range order dimer-row arrayed structure formation requires sufficient mobile energy to complete mass transport of the substituted Ge atoms in order to avoid the re-adsorption of these atoms; otherwise a deep-groove structure reconstruction is sequentially formed. A quasi-1D electron-like energy trough aligns in the direction perpendicular to the nanowire of the dimer-row arrayed structure in the c(8  ×  2) phase on a 0.75 Ml Au/Ge(0 0 1) surface, which is contributed by the Au-Ge dimer rows and the subsurface Ge atoms below them. The bottom energy of the energy trough is consistent with angle-resolved photo-emission spectroscopy studies (Schäfer et al 2008 Phys. Rev. Lett. 101 236802, Meyer et al 2011 Phys. Rev. B 83 121411(R)).

One-dimensional metallic surface states of Pt-induced atomic nanowires on Ge(0 0 1)

Surface states of platinum-induced atomic nanowires on a germanium (0 0 1) surface, which shows a structural phase transition at 80 K, were studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). We observed four one-dimensional metallic surface states, among which, two bands were reported in our previous study (Yaji et al 2013 Phys. Rev. B 87 241413). One of the newly-found two bands is a quasi-one-dimensional state and is split into two due to the Rashba effect. Photoelectron intensity from one of the spin-polarized branches is reduced at a boundary of the surface Brillouin zone below the phase transition temperature. The reduction of the photoelectron intensity in the low temperature phase is interpreted as the interference of photoelectrons, not as the Peierls instability. We also discuss the low energy properties of the metallic surface states and their spin splitting using high-resolution ARPES with a vacuum ultraviolet laser.

Modeling 1D structures on semiconductor surfaces: synergy of theory and experiment

Atomic scale nanowires attract enormous interest in a wide range of fields. On the one hand, due to their quasi-one-dimensional nature, they can act as an experimental testbed for exotic physics: Peierls instability, charge density waves, and Luttinger liquid behavior. On the other hand, due to their small size, they are of interest not only for future device applications in the micro-electronics industry, but also for applications regarding molecular electronics. This versatile nature makes them interesting systems to produce and study, but their size and growth conditions push both experimental production and theoretical modeling to their limits. In this review, modeling of atomic scale nanowires on semiconductor surfaces is discussed, focusing on the interplay between theory and experiment. The current state of modeling efforts on Pt- and Au-induced nanowires on Ge(001) is presented, indicating their similarities and differences. Recently discovered nanowire systems (Ir, Co, Sr) on the Ge(001) surface are also touched upon. The importance of scanning tunneling microscopy as a tool for direct comparison of theoretical and experimental data is shown, as is the power of density functional theory as an atomistic simulation approach. It becomes clear that complementary strengths of theoretical and experimental investigations are required for successful modeling of the atomistic nanowires, due to their complexity.

Controlling magnetism on metal surfaces with non-magnetic means: electric fields and surface charging

We review the state of the art of surface magnetic property control with non-magnetic means, concentrating on metallic surfaces and techniques such as charge-doping or external electric field (EEF) application. Magneto-electric coupling via EEF-based charge manipulation is discussed as a way to tailor single adatom spins, exchange interaction between adsorbates or anisotropies of layered systems. The mechanisms of paramagnetic and spin-dependent electric field screening and the effect thereof on surface magnetism are discussed in the framework of theoretical and experimental studies. The possibility to enhance the effect of EEF by immersing the target system into an electrolyte or ionic liquid is discussed by the example of substitutional impurities and metallic alloy multilayers. A similar physics is pointed out for the case of charge traps, metallic systems decoupled from a bulk electron bath. In that case the charging provides the charge carrier density changes necessary to affect the magnetic moments and anisotropies in the system. Finally, the option of using quasi-free electrons rather than localized atomic spins for surface magnetism control is discussed with the example of Shockley-type metallic surface states confined to magnetic nanoislands.

Self-lacing atom chains

The structural and electronic properties of self-lacing atomic chains on Pt modified Ge(001) surfaces have been studied using low-temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy. The self-lacing chains have a cross section of only one atom, are perfectly straight, thousands of atoms long and virtually defect free. The atomic chains are composed of dimers that have their bonds aligned in a direction parallel to the chain direction. At low temperatures the atomic chains undergo a Peierls transition: the periodicity of the chains doubles from a 2 × to a 4 × periodicity and an energy gap opens up. Furthermore, at low temperatures (T<80 K) novel quasi-one-dimensional electronic states are found. These quasi-one-dimensional electronic states originate from an electronic state of the underlying terrace that is confined between the atomic chains.

Strain relief guided growth of atomic nanowires in a Cu3N-Cu(110) molecular network

A self-corrugated Cu(3)N-Cu(110) molecular network shows the potential to overcome the element dependence barrier as demonstrated by epitaxial growth of atomic nanowires (approximately 1 nm in width) among various 3d, 4d, and 5d elements. Scanning tunneling microscopy shows that all of the investigated atomic nanowires share an identical structure, featuring uniform width, height, orientation and the same minimum separation distance. Ab initio study reveals that the formation mechanism of atomic nanowires can be directly attributed to a strain relief guided asymmetric occupation of atoms on the originally symmetric crest zone of the corrugated network.

New model system for a one-dimensional electron liquid: self-organized atomic gold chains on Ge(001)

Unique electronic properties of self-organized Au atom chains on Ge(001) in novel c(8 x 2) long-range order are revealed by scanning tunneling microscopy. Along the nanowires an exceptionally narrow conduction path exists which is virtually decoupled from the substrate. It is laterally confined to the ultimate limit of single atom dimension, and is strictly separated from its neighbors, as not previously reported. The resulting tunneling conductivity shows a dramatic inhomogeneity of 2 orders of magnitude. The atom chains thus represent an outstandingly close approach to a one-dimensional electron liquid.
