Observation of Le Sage gravity analog in complex plasma

Fragmentation of a suspension of micron-sized plastic microparticles and their contraction into dense globules was experimentally obtained in a gas discharge plasma, when the plasma density was deliberately and abruptly increased. The globules took up spherical shapes 0.14-1.1 mm in diameters and contained from tens to thousands microparticles. The fragmentation and globule formation appears to be similar to the development of gravitational instability. This process is attributed to the Le Sage's like attraction among microparticles in a dense plasma due to the plasma losses inside a globule hypothesized theoretically in the middle of the 1990s. The key role of plasma flows in the attraction was prominently demonstrated in the same experiment by the distinctly visible disintegration of the globules when we reduced the density of the surrounding plasma to the initial one. Also molecular dynamics simulations of fragmentation of microparticle clouds and globules formation qualitatively resemble typical patterns of the fragmentation and collapse of interstellar nebulae.

Penetration of a supersonic particle at the interface in a binary complex plasma

The penetration of a supersonic particle at the interface is studied in a binary complex plasma. Inspired by the experiments performed in the PK-3 Plus Laboratory on board the International Space Station, Langevin dynamics simulations were carried out. A Mach cone structure forms in the lateral wave behind the supersonic extra particle, where the kink of the cone flanks is observed at the interface. The propagation of the pulse-like perturbation along the interface is demonstrated by the evolution of the radial and axial velocity of the small particles in the vicinity of the interface. The decay of the pulse strength is determined by the friction, where the propagation distance can reach several interparticle distances for small damping rate. The dependence of the dynamics of the background particles in the vicinity of the interface on the penetration direction implies that the disparity of the mobility may be the cause of various interfacial effects.

Interfacial wave dynamics of a drop with an embedded bubble

This article describes how an embedded bubble changes the surface wave of a suspended liquid drop, and how such modifications, if recorded experimentally, can be used to detect voids in typically opaque interior of the fluid. The analysis uses a matrix formalism to predict the frequencies for natural oscillation and the deformation for acoustically induced forced vibration. The theory shows that the embedded cavity causes major shifts in the frequency and amplitude values as well as twofold increase in number of natural modes, indicating multifacetted utility of the results in process diagnostics, material characterizations, and combustion technology.

Collective effects in vortex movements in complex plasmas

We study the onset and characteristics of vortices in complex (dusty) plasmas using two-dimensional simulations in a setup modeled after the PK-3 Plus laboratory. A small number of microparticles initially self-arranges in a monolayer around the void. As additional particles are introduced, an extended system of vortices develops due to a nonzero curl of the plasma forces. We demonstrate a shear-thinning effect in the vortices. Velocity structure functions and the energy and enstrophy spectra show that vortex flow turbulence is present that is in essence of the "classical" Kolmogorov type.

Dynamic circulation in a complex plasma

The dynamic circulation of dust particles in a cylindrical complex plasma is studied experimentally. A levitated cloud of charged dust particles rotates around an axis in an ion flow induced by the coupling of applied magnetic field with the electric field due to plasma density gradient. The vertical and horizontal cross sections of the cloud reveal the dynamic circulation with helical trajectories of dust particles with meridional ascending motion near the axis. The dust particles in the center bottom in the cloud remain near a stagnation point and act like tea leaves in a teacup as described by Einstein in 1926.

Dust particle radial confinement in a dc glow discharge

A self-consistent nonlocal model of the positive column of a dc glow discharge with dust particles is presented. Radial distributions of plasma parameters and the dust component in an axially homogeneous glow discharge are considered. The model is based on the solution of a nonlocal Boltzmann equation for the electron energy distribution function, drift-diffusion equations for ions, and the Poisson equation for a self-consistent electric field. The radial distribution of dust particle density in a dust cloud was fixed as a given steplike function or was chosen according to an equilibrium Boltzmann distribution. The balance of electron and ion production in argon ionization by an electron impact and their losses on the dust particle surface and on the discharge tube walls is taken into account. The interrelation of discharge plasma and the dust cloud is studied in a self-consistent way, and the radial distributions of the discharge plasma and dust particle parameters are obtained. It is shown that the influence of the dust cloud on the discharge plasma has a nonlocal behavior, e.g., density and charge distributions in the dust cloud substantially depend on the plasma parameters outside the dust cloud. As a result of a self-consistent evolution of plasma parameters to equilibrium steady-state conditions, ionization and recombination rates become equal to each other, electron and ion radial fluxes become equal to zero, and the radial component of electric field is expelled from the dust cloud.
