Abstract
Mobility properties of spatially localized structures arising from chaotic but deterministic forcing of the bistable Swift-Hohenberg equation are studied and compared with the corresponding results when the chaotic forcing is replaced by white noise. Short structures are shown to possess greater mobility, resulting in larger root-mean-square speeds but shorter displacements than longer structures. Averaged over realizations, the displacement of the structure is ballistic at short times but diffusive at larger times. Similar results hold in two spatial dimensions. The effects of chaotic forcing on the stability of these structures is also quantified. Shorter structures are found to be more fragile than longer ones, and their stability region can be displaced outside the pinning region for constant forcing. Outside the stability region the deterministic fluctuations lead either to the destruction of the structure or to its gradual growth.

Abstract
Out of equilibrium systems under the influence of enough energy injection exhibit complex spatiotemporal behaviors. Based on a liquid crystal light valve experiment with translational optical feedback, we observe propagation, spatiotemporal intermittency, and defect turbulence of striped waves. A prototype model of pattern formation with translational coupling shows the same phenomenology. Close to the spatial instability, a local amplitude equation is derived. This amplitude equation allows us to reveal the origin and bifurcation diagram of the observed complex spatiotemporal dynamics. Experimental observations have a qualitative agreement with theoretical findings.

Abstract
We consider a paradigmatic nonvariational scalar Swift-Hohenberg equation that describes short wavenumber or large wavelength pattern forming systems. This work unveils evidence of the transition from stable stationary to moving localized structures in one spatial dimension as a result of a parity breaking instability. This behavior is attributed to the nonvariational character of the model. We show that the nature of this transition is supercritical. We characterize analytically and numerically this bifurcation scenario from which emerges asymmetric moving localized structures. A generalization for two-dimensional settings is discussed.

Abstract
We report the theoretical and experimental demonstration of one-dimensional drifting patterns generated by asymmetrical Fourier filtering in the transverse plane of an optical feedback system with a Kerr type nonlinearity. We show, with good agreement between our theoretical (analytics and numerics) calculations and experimental observations that at the primary instability threshold the group velocity is always different from zero. Consequently, the system is convective at this threshold, then exhibits drifting patterns.

Abstract
We investigate a control of the motion of localized structures (LSs) of light by means of delay feedback in the transverse section of a broad area nonlinear optical system. The delayed feedback is found to induce a spontaneous motion of a solitary LS that is stationary and stable in the absence of feedback. We focus our analysis on an experimentally relevant system, namely the vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). We first present an experimental demonstration of the appearance of LSs in a 80 μm aperture VCSEL. Then, we theoretically investigate the self-mobility properties of the LSs in the presence of a time-delayed optical feedback and analyse the effect of the feedback phase and the carrier lifetime on the delay-induced spontaneous drift instability of these structures. We show that these two parameters affect strongly the space-time dynamics of two-dimensional LSs. We derive an analytical formula for the threshold associated with drift instability of LSs and a normal form equation describing the slow time evolution of the speed of the moving structure.

Abstract
A nonlinear optical medium with nonlocal feedback is shown to have all the necessary ingredients to simulate a growthlike process that generates golden spirals and phyllotactic patterns. Elementary droplets of light are generated by the optical nonlinearity whereas the combination of rotation and translation in the feedback loop geometrically distributes them on spiraling patterns. The symmetry of the geometrical arrangements is described with the help of a simple replication algorithm.

Abstract
Nonequilibrium localized states under the influence of translational coupling are studied experimentally and theoretically. We show that localized structures are deformed and advected in the direction of the coupling, thus undergoing different instabilities. Experimentally, localized structures are obtained in a light valve with optical feedback. By introducing a tilt of one mirror in the feedback loop, localized structures acquire a translational coupling. To understand the phenomenon in a universal framework we consider a prototypical model of localized states with translational coupling in one and two spatial dimensions. The model allows us to analytically characterize the propagation speed and the deformation exhibited by the localized state profiles as well as to figure out different mechanisms of destabilization of these dissipative structures. The results are in good qualitative agreement with the experimental and numerical observations.

Abstract
We demonstrate self-trapped laser beams carrying phase singularities in nematic liquid crystals. We experimentally observe the astigmatic transformation of vortex beams into spiraling dipole azimuthons accompanied by power-dependent charge-flipping of the on-axis phase singularity. The latter topological reactions involve triplets of vortex lines and resemble pitchfork bifurcations.
