Muonium emission into vacuum from mesoporous thin films at cryogenic temperatures

Pulsed CW laser for long-term spectroscopic measurements at high power in deep-UV

We present a novel technique for in-vacuum cavity-enhanced UV spectroscopy that allows nearly continuous measurements over several days, minimizing mirror degradation caused by high-power UV radiation. Our method relies on pulsing of the cavity's internal power, which increases the UV intensity to maximum only for short periods when the studied atom is within the cavity mode volume while keeping the average power low to prevent mirror degradation. Additionally, this method significantly decreases laser-induced background on charged particle detectors. The described 244 nm laser system is designed for 1S-2S two-photon CW spectroscopy of muonium in the Mu-MASS project. It was tested to provide intracavity powers above 20 W, requiring maintenance only a few times a day. The pulsing technique demonstrates minimal impact on the radiation frequency, with no observed shifts exceeding 15 kHz. Our approach represents a promising new technique for high-precision spectroscopy of atoms in harsh UV environments and demonstrates the feasibility of CW spectroscopy of muonium.

Update of Muonium 1S-2S transition frequency

Abstract

We present an updated value of the Muonium 1S-2S transition frequency, highlighting contributions from different QED corrections as well as the large uncertainty in the Dirac contribution, stemming from the uncertainty of the electron to muon mass ratio. Improving the measurement of this spectral line would allow to extract a more accurate determination of fundamental constants, such as the electron to muon mass ratio or, combined with the Muonium hyperfine splitting, an independent value of the Rydberg constant. Furthermore, we report on the current status of the Mu-MASS experiment, which aims at measuring the Muonium 1S-2S transition frequency at a 10 kHz uncertainty level.

Muonium Lamb shift: theory update and experimental prospects

We review the theory of the Lamb shift for muonium, provide an updated numerical value and present the prospects of the Mu-MASS collaboration at PSI to improve upon their recent measurement. Due to its smaller nuclear mass, the contributions of the higher-order recoil corrections (160 kHz level) and nucleus self-energy (40 kHz level) are enhanced for muonium compared to hydrogen where those are below the level of the latest measurement performed by Hessels et al. and thus could not be tested yet. The ongoing upgrades to the Mu-MASS setup will open up the possibility to probe these contributions and improve the sensitivity of this measurement to searches for new physics in the muonic sector.

Towards an Independent Determination of Muon g-2 from Muonium Spectroscopy

We show that muonium spectroscopy in the coming years can reach a precision high enough to determine the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon below one part per million (ppm). Such an independent determination of muon g-2 would certainly shed light on the ∼2  ppm difference currently observed between spin-precession measurements and (R-ratio based) standard model predictions. The magnetic dipole interaction between electrons and (anti)muons bound in muonium gives rise to a hyperfine splitting (HFS) of the ground state which is sensitive to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. A direct comparison of the muonium frequency measurements of the HFS at J-PARC and the 1S-2S transition at PSI with theory predictions will allow us to extract muon g-2 with high precision. Improving the accuracy of QED calculations of these transitions by about 1 order of magnitude is also required. Moreover, the good agreement between theory and experiment for the electron g-2 indicates that new physics interactions are unlikely to affect muonium spectroscopy down to the envisaged precision.

The Muonium Antimatter Gravity Experiment

A direct measurement of the gravitational acceleration of antimatter has the potential to show that we live in a “Dirac-Milne” Universe, which could explain cosmological observations without the need for dark matter, dark energy, inflation, or missing antimatter. Such a measurement would also be sensitive to the possible existence of a fifth force. Cooling antimatter to temperatures where gravitational energies are comparable to thermal energies is challenging for most forms of antimatter, which annihilate upon contact with matter. The exception is the antimuon (μ+), which is easily cooled by stopping in cold matter, but the short muon lifetime poses challenges. Positive muons that stop in material will combine with free electrons to form muonium, a neutral leptonic atom with most of its mass derived from the 2nd-generation antimuon. We are developing the Muonium Antimatter Gravity Experiment (MAGE) to measure the gravitational force on muonium using a novel, monoenergetic, low-velocity, horizontal muonium beam directed at an ultra-precise atom interferometer. If successful, MAGE will measure for the first time the gravitational coupling to a 2nd-generation particle in a system whose antimatter-dominated mass is not predominantly strong-interaction binding energy. The novel MAGE beam production approach could also have important applications to other muonium experiments as well as to the measurement ofg– 2.

Multipass laser cavity for efficient transverse illumination of an elongated volume

A multipass laser cavity is presented which can be used to illuminate an elongated volume from a transverse direction. The illuminated volume can also have a very large transverse cross section. Convenient access to the illuminated volume is granted. The multipass cavity is very robust against misalignment, and no active stabilization is needed. The scheme is suitable for example in beam experiments, where the beam path must not be blocked by a laser mirror, or if the illuminated volume must be very large. This cavity was used for the muonic-hydrogen experiment in which 6 μm laser light illuminated a volume of 7 × 25 × 176 mm3, using mirrors that are only 12 mm in height. We present our measurement of the intensity distribution inside the multipass cavity and show that this is in good agreement with our simulation.

Experimental considerations for testing antimatter antigravity using positronium 1S-2S spectroscopy

In this contribution to the WAG 2013 workshop we report on the status of our measurement of the 1S-2S transition frequency of positronium. The aim of this experiment is to reach a precision of 0.5 ppb in order to cross check the QED calculations. After reviewing the current available sources of Ps, we consider laser cooling as a route to push the precision in the measurement down to 0.1 ppb. If such an uncertainty could be achieved, this would be sensitive to the gravitational redshift and therefore be able to assess the sign of gravity for antimatter.
