Multiphoton above threshold effects in strong-field fragmentation

Proton tunneling in the dissociation of H2+ and its asymmetric isotopologues driven by circularly polarized THz laser pulses

Light-induced deprotonation of molecules is an important process in photochemical reactions. Here, we theoretically investigate the tunneling deprotonation of H2+ and its asymmetric isotopologues driven by circularly polarized THz laser pulses. The quasi-static picture shows that the field-dressed potential barrier is significantly lowered for the deprotonation channel when the mass asymmetry of the diatomic molecule increases. Our numerical simulations demonstrate that when the mass symmetry breaks, the tunneling deprotonation is significantly enhanced and the proton tunneling becomes the dominant dissociation channel in the THz driving fields. In addition, the simulated nuclear momentum distributions show that the emission of the proton is directed by the effective vector potential for the deprotonation channel and, meanwhile, the angular distribution of the emitting proton is affected by the alignment and rotation of the molecule induced by the rotating field.

Double-Slit Interference in the Ion Dynamics of Dissociative Photoionization

The ion momentum distribution in the x-ray-induced dissociative photoionization of molecules is investigated, treating the ionization analytically under the Born-Oppenheimer approximation and simulating numerically the ion motion via the Schrödinger equation. The ion-photoelectron entanglement transfers information of the electronic interference to the ion dynamics. As a consequence, the ion momentum distributions of dissociative molecular photoionization present Young's double-slit interference when the photoelectron emission angle is fixed. We demonstrate that double-slit interference signatures persist in the ion longitudinal momentum shift even when the information of the correlated photoelectron is lost, which is the case for heteronuclear molecules when an additional photoelectron recoil momentum arises due to the different ion masses. For the case of sequential double ionization, we show that double-slit interference in the ion dynamics can be utilized for coherent control of the molecular dynamics.

Enhancing Strong-Field Dissociation of H_{2}^{+} in Helium Nanodroplets

We investigate the above-threshold multiphoton ionization of H_{2} embedded in superfluid He nanodroplets driven by ultraviolet femtosecond laser pulses. We find that the surrounding He atoms enhance the dissociation of in-droplet H_{2}^{+} from lower vibrational states as compared to that of isolated gas-phase molecules. As a result, the discrete peaks in the photoelectron energy spectrum correlated with the HHe^{+} from the dissociative in-droplet molecule shift to higher energies. Based on the electron-nuclear correlation, the photoelectrons with higher energies are correlated to the nuclei of the low-vibrationally excited molecular ion as the nuclei share less photon energy. Our time-dependent nuclear wave packet quantum simulation using a simplified He-H_{2}^{+} system confirms the joint contribution of the driving laser field and the neighboring He atoms to the dissociation dynamics of the solute molecular ion. The results strengthen our understanding of the role of the environment on light-induced ultrafast dynamics of molecules.

Clocking Dissociative Above-Threshold Double Ionization of H_{2} in a Multicycle Laser Pulse

The dissociative above-threshold double ionization (ATDI) of H_{2} in strong laser fields involves the sequential releasing of two electrons at specific instants with the stretching of the molecular bond. By mapping the releasing instants of two electrons to their emission directions in a multicycle polarization-skewed femtosecond laser pulse, we experimentally clock the dissociative ATDI of H_{2} via distinct photon-number-resolved pathways, which are distinguished in the kinetic energy release spectrum of two protons measured in coincidence. The timings of the experimentally resolved dissociative ATDI pathways are in good accordance with the classical predictions. Our results verify the multiphoton scenario of the dissociative ATDI of H_{2} in both time and energy fashion, strengthening the understanding of the strong-field phenomenon and providing a robust tool with a subcycle time resolution to clock abundant ultrafast dynamics of molecules.

Timing Dissociative Ionization of H_{2} Using a Polarization-Skewed Femtosecond Laser Pulse

We experimentally observe the bond stretching time of one-photon and net-two-photon dissociation pathways of singly ionized H_{2} molecules driven by a polarization-skewed femtosecond laser pulse. By measuring the angular distributions of the ejected photoelectron and nuclear fragments in coincidence, the cycle-changing polarization of the laser field enables us to clock the photon-ionization starting time and photon-dissociation stopping time, analogous to a stopwatch. After the single ionization of H_{2}, our results show that the produced H_{2}^{+} takes almost the same time in the one-photon and net-two-photon dissociation pathways to stretch to the internuclear distance of the one-photon coupled dipole-transition between the ground and excited electronic states. The spatiotemporal mapping character of the polarization-skewed laser field provides us a straightforward route to clock the ultrafast dynamics of molecules with sub-optical-cycle time resolution.

Electron-nuclear correlated multiphoton-route to Rydberg fragments of molecules

Atoms and molecules exposed to strong laser fields can be excited to the Rydberg states with very high principal quantum numbers and large orbitals. It allows acceleration of neutral particles, generate near-threshold harmonics, and reveal multiphoton Rabi oscillations and rich photoelectron spectra. However, the physical mechanism of Rydberg state excitation in strong laser fields is yet a puzzle. Here, we identify the electron-nuclear correlated multiphoton excitation as the general mechanism by coincidently measuring all charged and neutral fragments ejected from a H₂ molecule. Ruled by the ac-Stark effect, the internuclear separation for resonant multiphoton excitation varies with the laser intensity. It alters the photon energy partition between the ejected electrons and nuclei and thus leads to distinct kinetic energy spectra of the nuclear fragments. The electron-nuclear correlation offers an alternative visual angle to capture rich ultrafast processes of complex molecules.

Static Coherent States Method: One- and Two-Electron Laser-Induced Systems with Classical Nuclear Dynamics

In this report, we introduce the static coherent states (SCS) method for investigating quantum electron dynamics in a one- or two-electron laser-induced system. The SCS method solves the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE) both in imaginary and real times on the basis of a static grid of coherent states (CSs). Moreover, we consider classical dynamics for the nuclei by solving their Newtonian equations of motion. By implementing classical nuclear dynamics, we compute the electronic-state potential energy curves of H2+ in the absence and presence of an ultra-short intense laser field. We used this method to investigate charge migration in H2+. In particular, we found that the charge migration time increased exponentially with inter-nuclear distance. We also observed substantial charge localization for sufficiently long molecular bonds.

High-order above-threshold dissociation of molecules

Above-threshold ionization of atoms in strong laser fields is extensively studied for its overwhelming importance and universality. However, its counterpart, above-threshold dissociation of molecules in strong laser fields, is hard to be observed, although it has been predicted for decades. In this paper, by measuring the momenta of photoelectron and dissociative fragments coincidently, we successfully obtained distinct nuclear energy peaks of the high-order above-threshold dissociation, which must appear simultaneously with the above-threshold ionization. The coexistence of high-order above-threshold dissociation and high-order above-threshold ionization in molecular dissociative ionization offers a perspective to disentangle the complex electron–nuclear correlation in molecules and to image the molecular orbitals, and so on.

Electrons bound to atoms or molecules can simultaneously absorb multiple photons via the above-threshold ionization featured with discrete peaks in the photoelectron spectrum on account of the quantized nature of the light energy. Analogously, the above-threshold dissociation of molecules has been proposed to address the multiple-photon energy deposition in the nuclei of molecules. In this case, nuclear energy spectra consisting of photon-energy spaced peaks exceeding the binding energy of the molecular bond are predicted. Although the observation of such phenomena is difficult, this scenario is nevertheless logical and is based on the fundamental laws. Here, we report conclusive experimental observation of high-order above-threshold dissociation of H₂ in strong laser fields where the tunneling-ionized electron transfers the absorbed multiphoton energy, which is above the ionization threshold to the nuclei via the field-driven inelastic rescattering. Our results provide an unambiguous evidence that the electron and nuclei of a molecule as a whole absorb multiple photons, and thus above-threshold ionization and above-threshold dissociation must appear simultaneously, which is the cornerstone of the nowadays strong-field molecular physics.

Correlated electron-nuclear dynamics in above-threshold multiphoton ionization of asymmetric molecule

The partition of the photon energy into the subsystems of molecules determines many photon-induced chemical and physical dynamics in laser-molecule interactions. The electron-nuclear energy sharing from multiphoton ionization of molecules has been used to uncover the correlated dynamics of the electron and fragments. However, most previous studies focus on symmetric molecules. Here we study the electron-nuclear energy sharing in strong-field photoionization of HeH2+ by solving the one-dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE). Compared with symmetric molecules, the joint electron-nuclear energy spectrum (JES) of HeH2+ reveals an anomalous energy shift at certain nuclear energies, while it disappears at higher and lower nuclear energies. Through tracing the time evolution of the wavepacket of bound states, we identify that this energy shift originates from the joint effect of the Stark shift, associated with the permanent dipole, and the Autler-Townes effect due to the coupling of the 2pσ and 2sσ states in strong fields. The energy shift in the JES appears at certain nuclear distances only when both Stark effect and Autler-Townes effect play important roles. We further demonstrate that the electron-nuclei energy sharing can be controlled by varying laser intensity for asymmetric molecules, providing alternative approaches to manipulate photochemical reactions for more complex molecules.

Dissociation and Ionization of Quasi-Periodically Vibrating H2+ in Intense Few-Cycle Mid-Infrared Laser Fields

Using quantum mechanics calculations, we theoretically study the dissociation and ionization dynamics of the hydrogen-molecule ion in strong laser fields. Having prepared the nuclear wave packet of H₂⁺ in a specific vibrational state, a pump laser is used to produce a vibrational excitation, leading to quasi-periodical vibration without ionization. Then, a time-delayed few-cycle laser is applied to trigger the dissociation or ionization of H₂⁺. Both the time delay and the intensity of the probe laser alter the competition between dissociation and ionization. We also explore the dependence of kinetic-energy release spectra of fragments on the time delay, showing that the channels of above-threshold dissociation and below-threshold dissociation are opened and closed periodically. Also, dissociation from different channels is influenced by nuclear motion. The dissociation mechanism has been described in detail using the Floquet picture. This work provides a useful method for steering the electronic and nuclear dynamics of diatomic molecules in intense laser fields.

The dissociative ionization (multiphoton regime) of the D₂⁺ ion by ultrashort laser pulses has been studied theoretically using ab initio calculations. The combined ionization and dissociation spectrum was explored for fixed molecular axis orientations. In accordance with previous investigations, the dominant features in the obtained joint energy spectrum were multiphoton peaks. In addition to this, in the present work, photoelectron angular distributions were analyzed as well. By performing a partial wave analysis for each multiphoton peak, we have identified the number of absorbed photons. Moreover, we also found that the angular distribution can significantly change inside a multiphoton peak as a function of electron and nuclear kinetic energy.

Photon Energy Deposition in Strong-Field Single Ionization of Multielectron Molecules

Molecules exposed to strong laser fields may coherently absorb multiple photons and deposit the energy into electrons and nuclei, triggering the succeeding dynamics as the primary stage of the light-molecule interaction. We experimentally explore the electron-nuclear sharing of the absorbed photon energy in above-threshold multiphoton single ionization of multielectron molecules. Using CO as a prototype, vibrational and orbital resolved electron-nuclear sharing of the photon energy is observed. Different from the simplest one- or two-electron systems, the participation of the multiple orbitals and the coupling of various electronic states in the strong-field ionization and dissociation processes alter the photon energy deposition dynamics of the multielectron molecule. The population of numerous vibrational states of the molecular cation as the energy reservoir in the ionization process plays an important role in photon energy sharing between the emitted electron and the nuclear fragments.

Characterization of Molecular Breakup by Very Intense Femtosecond XUV Laser Pulses

We study the breakup of H2+ exposed to superintense, femtosecond laser pulses with frequencies greater than that corresponding to the ionization potential. By solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in an extensive field parameter range, it is revealed that highly nonresonant dissociation channels can dominate over ionization. By considering field-dressed Born-Oppenheimer potential energy curves in the reference frame following a free electron in the field, we propose a simple physical model that characterizes this dissociation mechanism. The model is used to predict control of vibrational excitation, magnitude of the dissociation yields, and nuclear kinetic energy release spectra. Finally, the joint energy spectrum for the ionization process illustrates the energy sharing between the electron and the nuclei and the correlation between ionization and dissociation processes.

Electron-nuclear energy sharing in above-threshold multiphoton dissociative ionization of H2

We report experimental observation of the energy sharing between electron and nuclei in above-threshold multiphoton dissociative ionization of H2 by strong laser fields. The absorbed photon energy is shared between the ejected electron and nuclei in a correlated fashion, resulting in multiple diagonal lines in their joint energy spectrum governed by the energy conservation of all fragment particles.

Correlated electron and nuclear dynamics in strong field photoionization of H(2)(+)

We present a theoretical study of H(2)(+) ionization under strong IR femtosecond pulses by using a method designed to extract correlated (2D) photoelectron and proton kinetic energy spectra. The results show two distinct ionization mechanisms-tunnel and multiphoton ionization-in which electrons and nuclei do not share the energy from the field in the same way. Electrons produced in multiphoton ionization share part of their energy with the nuclei, an effect that shows up in the 2D spectra in the form of energy-conservation fringes similar to those observed in weak-field ionization of diatomic molecules. In contrast, tunneling electrons lead to fringes whose position does not depend on the proton kinetic energy. At high intensity, the two processes coexist and the 2D plots show a very rich behavior, suggesting that the correlation between electron and nuclear dynamics in strong field ionization is more complex than one would have anticipated.
