Evidence for the role of normal-state electrons in nanoelectromechanical damping mechanisms at very low temperatures

Soft-Clamped Silicon Nitride String Resonators at Millikelvin Temperatures

We demonstrate that soft-clamped silicon nitride strings with a large aspect ratio can be operated at mK temperatures. The quality factors (Q) of two measured devices show consistent dependency on the cryostat temperature, with soft-clamped mechanical modes reaching Q>10^{9} at roughly 46 mK. For low optical readout power, Q is found to saturate, indicating good thermalization between the sample and the stage it is mounted on. Our best device exhibits a calculated force sensitivity of 9.6  zN/sqrt[Hz] and a thermal decoherence time of 0.38 s, which bode well for future applications such as nanomechanical force sensing.

A macroscopic object passively cooled into its quantum ground state of motion beyond single-mode cooling

The nature of the quantum-to-classical crossover remains one of the most challenging open question of Science to date. In this respect, moving objects play a specific role. Pioneering experiments over the last few years have begun exploring quantum behaviour of micron-sized mechanical systems, either by passively cooling single GHz modes, or by adapting laser cooling techniques developed in atomic physics to cool specific low-frequency modes far below the temperature of their surroundings. Here instead we describe a very different approach, passive cooling of a whole micromechanical system down to 500 μK, reducing the average number of quanta in the fundamental vibrational mode at 15 MHz to just 0.3 (with even lower values expected for higher harmonics); the challenge being to be still able to detect the motion without disturbing the system noticeably. With such an approach higher harmonics and the surrounding environment are also cooled, leading to potentially much longer mechanical coherence times, and enabling experiments questioning mechanical wave-function collapse, potentially from the gravitational background, and quantum thermodynamics. Beyond the average behaviour, here we also report on the fluctuations of the fundamental vibrational mode of the device in-equilibrium with the cryostat. These reveal a surprisingly complex interplay with the local environment and allow characteristics of two distinct thermodynamic baths to be probed.

Compared to active techniques, passive cooling of mechanical modes allows to work with devices in equilibrium with their environment without excess damping. Here, the authors demonstrate passive cooling and thermalisation of a 15 μm drum-head device with MHz fundamental flexure to its quantum ground state.

Observation of a superconducting glass state in granular superconducting diamond

The magnetic field dependence of the superconductivity in nanocrystalline boron doped diamond thin films is reported. Evidence of a superconducting glass state is presented, as demonstrated by the observation of a quasi de Almeida-Thouless line in the phase diagram and a logarithmic time dependence of the magnetism. The position of the phase boundary in the H-T plane is determined from electrical transport data by detailed fitting to quasi-zero-dimensional fluctuation conductivity theory. This allows determination of the boundary between resistive and non-resistive behaviour to be made with greater precision than the standard ad hoc onset/midpoint/offset criterion. We attribute the glassy superconductivity to the morphological granularity of the diamond films.

High Quality Factor Graphene-Based Two-Dimensional Heterostructure Mechanical Resonator

Ultralight mechanical resonators based on low-dimensional materials are well suited as exceptional transducers of minuscule forces or mass changes. However, the low dimensionality also provides a challenge to minimize resistive losses and heating. Here, we report on a novel approach that aims to combine different two-dimensional (2D) materials to tackle this challenge. We fabricated a heterostructure mechanical resonator consisting of few layers of niobium diselenide (NbSe₂) encapsulated by two graphene sheets. The hybrid membrane shows high quality factors up to 245,000 at low temperatures, comparable to the best few-layer graphene mechanical resonators. In contrast to few-layer graphene resonators, the device shows reduced electrical losses attributed to the lower resistivity of the NbSe₂ layer. The peculiar low-temperature dependence of the intrinsic quality factor points to dissipation over two-level systems which in turn relax over the electronic system. Our high sensitivity readout is enabled by coupling the membrane to a superconducting cavity which allows for the integration of the hybrid mechanical resonator as a sensitive and low loss transducer in future quantum circuits.
