Polaritonic solitons in a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a soft optical lattice

Stability of trapped Bose-Einstein condensate under a density-dependent gauge field

We study the ground-state stability of the trapped one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate under a density-dependent gauge field by variational and numerical methods. The competition of density-dependent gauge field and mean-field atomic interaction induces the instability of the ground state, which results in irregular dynamics. The threshold of the gauge field for exciting the instability is obtained analytically and confirmed numerically. When the gauge field is less than the threshold, the system is stable, and the gauge field induces chiral dynamics of the wave packet. When the gauge field is greater than the threshold, the system is unstable, and the ground-state wave packet will be deformed and fragmented. Interestingly, we find that as the gauge field approaches the threshold, strong dipolar and breathing dynamics take place, and strong modes mixing occurs, the instability of the system sets in. In addition, we show that the stability of the system can be well controlled by periodical modulation of the trapping potential. We provide theoretical evidence to understand and control the irregular dynamics associated with chiral superfluid induced by density-dependent gauge field.

Collision of two self-trapped atomic matter wave packets in an optical ring cavity

The interaction between atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and light field in an optical ring cavity gives rise to many interesting phenomena such as supersolid and movable self-trapped matter wave packets. Here we examined the collision of two self-trapped atomic matter wave packets in an optical ring cavity, and abundant colliding phenomena have been found in the system. Depending on the magnitude of colliding velocity, the collision dynamics exhibit very different features compared with the cavity-free case. When the initial colliding velocities of the two wave packets are small, they correlatedly oscillate around their initial equilibrium positions with a small amplitude. Increasing the collision velocity leads to severe scattering of the BEC atoms; after the collision, the two self-trapped wave packets usually break into small pieces. Interestingly, we found that such a medium velocity collision is of great phase sensitivity, which may make the system useful in precision matter wave interferometry. When the colliding velocity is further increased, in the bad cavity limit, the two wave packets collide phenomenally similar to two classical particles-they first approach each other, then separate with their shape virtually maintained. However, beyond the bad cavity limit, they experience severe spatial spreading.

Dynamical phase diagram of Gaussian wave packets in optical lattices

We study the dynamics of self-trapping in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) loaded in deep optical lattices with Gaussian initial conditions, when the dynamics is well described by the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation (DNLSE). In the literature an approximate dynamical phase diagram based on a variational approach was introduced to distinguish different dynamical regimes: diffusion, self-trapping, and moving breathers. However, we find that the actual DNLSE dynamics shows a completely different diagram than the variational prediction. We calculate numerically a detailed dynamical phase diagram accurately describing the different dynamical regimes. It exhibits a complex structure that can readily be tested in current experiments in BECs in optical lattices and in optical waveguide arrays. Moreover, we derive an explicit theoretical estimate for the transition to self-trapping in excellent agreement with our numerical findings, which may be a valuable guide as well for future studies on a quantum dynamical phase diagram based on the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian.

Bright solitonic matter-wave interferometer

We present the first realization of a solitonic atom interferometer. A Bose-Einstein condensate of 1×10(4) atoms of rubidium-85 is loaded into a horizontal optical waveguide. Through the use of a Feshbach resonance, the s-wave scattering length of the 85Rb atoms is tuned to a small negative value. This attractive atomic interaction then balances the inherent matter-wave dispersion, creating a bright solitonic matter wave. A Mach-Zehnder interferometer is constructed by driving Bragg transitions with the use of an optical lattice colinear with the waveguide. Matter-wave propagation and interferometric fringe visibility are compared across a range of s-wave scattering values including repulsive, attractive and noninteracting values. The solitonic matter wave is found to significantly increase fringe visibility even compared with a noninteracting cloud.
