Spin-orbit-induced circulating currents in a semiconductor nanostructure

Dissipationless Circulating Currents and Fringe Magnetic Fields Near a Single Spin Embedded in a Two-Dimensional Electron Gas

Theoretical calculations predict the anisotropic dissipationless circulating current induced by a spin defect in a two-dimensional electron gas. The shape and spatial extent of these dissipationless circulating currents depend dramatically on the relative strengths of spin-orbit fields with differing spatial symmetry, offering the potential to use an electric gate to manipulate nanoscale magnetic fields and couple magnetic defects. The spatial structure of the magnetic field produced by this current is calculated and provides a direct way to measure the spin-orbit fields of the host, as well as the defect spin orientation, e.g., through scanning nanoscale magnetometry.

Magneto-Optical Characterization of Trions in Symmetric InP-Based Quantum Dots for Quantum Communication Applications

Magneto-optical parameters of trions in novel large and symmetric InP-based quantum dots, uncommon for molecular beam epitaxy-grown nanostructures, with emission in the third telecom window, are measured in Voigt and Faraday configurations of an external magnetic field. The diamagnetic coefficients are found to be in the range of 1.5–4 μeV/T², and 8–15 μeV/T², respectively out-of-plane and in-plane of the dots. The determined values of diamagnetic shifts are related to the anisotropy of dot sizes. Trion g-factors are measured to be relatively small, in the range of 0.3–0.7 and 0.5–1.3, in both configurations, respectively. Analysis of single carrier g-factors, based on the formalism of spin-correlated orbital currents, leads to similar values for hole and electron of ~0.25 for Voigt and g_e ≈ −5; g_h ≈ +6 for Faraday configuration of the magnetic field. Values of g-factors close to zero measured in Voigt configuration make the investigated dots promising for electrical tuning of the g-factor sign, required for schemes of single spin control in qubit applications.

Blurring the Boundaries Between Topological and Nontopological Phenomena in Dots

We investigate the electronic and transport properties of topological and nontopological InAs_{0.85}Bi_{0.15} quantum dots (QDs) described by a ∼30  meV gapped Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang (BHZ) model with cylindrical confinement, i.e., "BHZ dots." Via modified Bessel functions, we analytically show that nontopological dots quite unexpectedly have discrete helical edge states, i.e., Kramers pairs with spin-angular-momentum locking similar to topological dots. These unusual nontopological edge states are geometrically protected due to confinement for a wide range of parameters and remarkably contrast with the bulk-edge correspondence in topological insulators, as no bulk topological invariant guarantees their existence. Moreover, for a conduction window with four edge states, we find that the two-terminal conductance G versus the QD radius R and the gate V_{g} controlling its levels shows a double peak at 2e^{2}/h for both topological and trivial BHZ QDs. This is in stark contrast to conductance measurements in 2D quantum spin Hall and trivial insulators. All of these results were also found in HgTe QDs. Bi-based BHZ dots should also prove important as hosts to room temperature edge spin qubits.

Interface-Induced Phenomena in Magnetism

This article reviews static and dynamic interfacial effects in magnetism, focusing on interfacially-driven magnetic effects and phenomena associated with spin-orbit coupling and intrinsic symmetry breaking at interfaces. It provides a historical background and literature survey, but focuses on recent progress, identifying the most exciting new scientific results and pointing to promising future research directions. It starts with an introduction and overview of how basic magnetic properties are affected by interfaces, then turns to a discussion of charge and spin transport through and near interfaces and how these can be used to control the properties of the magnetic layer. Important concepts include spin accumulation, spin currents, spin transfer torque, and spin pumping. An overview is provided to the current state of knowledge and existing review literature on interfacial effects such as exchange bias, exchange spring magnets, spin Hall effect, oxide heterostructures, and topological insulators. The article highlights recent discoveries of interface-induced magnetism and non-collinear spin textures, non-linear dynamics including spin torque transfer and magnetization reversal induced by interfaces, and interfacial effects in ultrafast magnetization processes.

Hole spins in an InAs/GaAs quantum dot molecule subject to lateral electric fields

There has been tremendous progress in manipulating electron and hole-spin states in quantum dots or quantum dot molecules (QDMs) with growth-direction (vertical) electric fields and optical excitations. However, the response of carriers in QDMs to an in-plane (lateral) electric field remains largely unexplored. We computationally explore spin-mixing interactions in the molecular states of single holes confined in vertically stacked InAs/GaAs QDMs using atomistic tight-binding simulations. We systematically investigate QDMs with different geometric structure parameters and local piezoelectric fields. We observe both a relatively large Stark shift and a change in the Zeeman splitting as the magnitude of the lateral electric field increases. Most importantly, we observe that lateral electric fields induce hole-spin mixing with a magnitude that increases with increasing lateral electric field over a moderate range. These results suggest that applied lateral electric fields could be used to fine tune and manipulate, in situ, the energy levels and spin properties of single holes confined in QDMs.
