Plasticity of a colloidal polycrystal under cyclic shear

Reversible-to-irreversible transition of colloidal polycrystals under cyclic athermal quasistatic deformation

Cyclic loading on granular packings and amorphous media exhibits a transition from reversible elastic behavior to irreversible plasticity. The present study compares the irreversibility transition and microscopic details of colloidal polycrystals under oscillatory tensile-compressive and shear strain. Under both modes, the systems exhibit a reversible to irreversible transition. However, the strain amplitude at which the transition is observed is larger in the shear strain than in the tensile-compressive mode. The threshold strain amplitude is confirmed by analyzing the dynamical properties, such as mobility and atomic strain (von Mises shear strain and the volumetric strain). The structural changes are quantified using a hexatic order parameter. Under both modes of deformation, dislocations and grain boundaries in polycrystals disappear, and monocrystals are formed. We also recognize the dislocation motion through grains. The key difference is that strain accumulates diagonally in oscillatory tensile-compressive deformation, whereas in shear deformation, strain accumulation is along the x or y axis.

The effect of dynamically heterogeneous interphases on the particle dynamics of polymer nanocomposites

The entanglements of dynamically asymmetric polymer layers influence relaxations of nanoparticles in polymer nanocomposites. In this work, the dynamics of polymer-adsorbed and polymer-grafted nanoparticles in a poly(methyl acrylate) matrix polymer was investigated using X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) to understand the role of chain rigidity and chemical heterogeneities in particle dynamics. Locations of dynamic heterogeneities close to nanoparticles and away from particle surfaces were examined with the comparison of adsorbed and grafted nanoparticles. Our results show that the chemical heterogeneities around dispersed nanoparticles transitioned the particle dynamics from Brownian diffusion into hyperdiffusion, and moreover, the high rigidity of chains in the chemically heterogeneous interfacial layers slowed down the particle dynamics. The hyperdiffusion measured both in grafted particles and adsorbed particles was attributed to the dense interfacial mixing of dynamically heterogeneous chains.

Deformation profiles and microscopic dynamics of complex fluids during oscillatory shear experiments

Oscillatory shear tests are widely used in rheology to characterize the linear and non-linear mechanical response of complex fluids, including the yielding transition. There is an increasing urge to acquire detailed knowledge of the deformation field that is effectively present across the sample during these tests; at the same time, there is mounting evidence that the macroscopic rheological response depends on the elusive microscopic behavior of the material constituents. Here we employ a strain-controlled shear-cell with transparent walls to visualize and quantify the dynamics of tracers embedded in various cyclically sheared complex fluids, ranging from almost-ideal elastic to yield stress fluids. For each sample, we use image correlation processing to measure the macroscopic deformation field, and echo-differential dynamic microscopy to probe the microscopic irreversible sample dynamics in reciprocal space; finally, we devise a simple scheme to spatially map the rearrangements in the sheared sample, once again without tracking the tracers. For the yield stress sample, we obtain a wave-vector dependent characterization of shear-induced diffusion across the yielding transition, which is accompanied by a three-order-of-magnitude speed-up of the dynamics and by a transition from localized, intermittent rearrangements to a more spatially homogeneous and temporally uniform activity. Our tracking free approach is intrinsically multi-scale, can successfully discriminate between different types of dynamics, and can be automated to minimize user intervention. Applications are many, as it can be translated to other imaging modes, including fluorescence, and can be used with sub-resolution tracers and even without tracers, for samples that provide intrinsic optical contrast.

Multiple dynamic regimes in a coarsening foam

Intermittent dynamics driven by internal stress imbalances in disordered systems is a fascinating yet poorly understood phenomenon. Here, we study it for a coarsening foam. By exploiting differential dynamic microscopy and particle tracking we determine the dynamical characteristics of the foam at different ages in reciprocal and direct space, respectively. At all wavevectors q investigated, the intermediate scattering function exhibits a compressed exponential decay. However, the access to unprecedentedly small values of q highlights the existence of two distinct regimes for the q-dependence of the foam relaxation rate Γ(q). At high q, Γ(q) ∼ q consistent with directionally-persistent and intermittent bubble displacements. At low q, we find the surprising scaling Γ(q) ∼ q ^δ , with δ = 1.6 ± 0.2. The analysis of the bubble displacement distribution in real space reveals the existence of a displacement cut-off of the order of the bubble diameter. Introducing such cut-off length in an existing model, describing stress-driven dynamics in disordered systems, fully accounts for the observed behavior in direct and reciprocal space.

Scaling of relaxation and excess entropy in plastically deformed amorphous solids

When stressed sufficiently, solid materials yield and deform plastically via reorganization of microscopic constituents. Indeed, it is possible to alter the microstructure of materials by judicious application of stress, an empirical process utilized in practice to enhance the mechanical properties of metals. Understanding the interdependence of plastic flow and microscopic structure in these nonequilibrium states, however, remains a major challenge. Here, we experimentally investigate this relationship, between the relaxation dynamics and microscopic structure of disordered colloidal solids during plastic deformation. We apply oscillatory shear to solid colloidal monolayers and study their particle trajectories as a function of shear rate in the plastic regime. Under these circumstances, the strain rate, the relaxation rate associated with plastic flow, and the sample microscopic structure oscillate together, but with different phases. Interestingly, the experiments reveal that the relaxation rate associated with plastic flow at time t is correlated with the strain rate and sample microscopic structure measured at earlier and later times, respectively. The relaxation rate, in this nonstationary condition, exhibits power-law, shear-thinning behavior and scales exponentially with sample excess entropy. Thus, measurement of sample static structure (excess entropy) provides insight about both strain rate and constituent rearrangement dynamics in the sample at earlier times.

Poiseuille Flow of Soft Polycrystals in 2D Rough Channels

Polycrystals are partially ordered solids where crystalline order extends over mesoscopic length scales, namely, the grain size. We study the Poisuielle flow of such materials in a rough channel. In general, similar to yield stress fluids, three distinct dynamical states, namely, flowing, stick-slip, and jammed can be observed, with a yield threshold dependent on channel width. Importantly, the interplay between the finite channel width, and the intrinsic ordering scale (the grain size) leads to a new type of spatiotemporal heterogeneity. In wide channels, although the average flow profile remains pluglike, at the underlying granular level, there is vigorous grain remodeling activity resulting from the velocity heterogeneity among the grains. As the channel width approaches typical grain size, the flowing polycrystalline state breaks up into a spatially heterogeneous mixture of flowing liquid like patches and chunks of nearly static grains. Despite these static grains, the average velocity still shows a parabolic profile, dominated by the moving liquidlike patches. However, the solid-liquid front moves at nearly constant speed in the opposite direction of the external drive.

Microscopic precursors of failure in soft matter

The mechanical properties of soft matter are of great importance in countless applications, in addition of being an active field of academic research. Given the relative ease with which soft materials can be deformed, their non-linear behavior is of particular relevance. Large loads eventually result in material failure. In this Perspective article, we discuss recent work aiming at detecting precursors of failure by scrutinizing the microscopic structure and dynamics of soft systems under various conditions of loading. In particular, we show that the microscopic dynamics is a powerful indicator of the ultimate fate of soft materials, capable of unveiling precursors of failure up to thousands of seconds before any macroscopic sign of weakening.

Experimental signatures of a nonequilibrium phase transition near the crossover point of a Langmuir monolayer

We investigate the response of the two-dimensional (2D) continuous non-particulate film of surfactant sorbitan tristearate confined at the air-water interface under oscillatory shear deformation. The time dependence of various rheological parameters show critical-like behavior at a value of strain amplitude close to the crossover point of elastic ([Formula: see text]) and viscous ([Formula: see text]) shear moduli. Imposing oscillatory shear of different strain amplitudes ([Formula: see text]) above and below the crossover strain amplitude ([Formula: see text]) over a large number of cycles, we quantify the temporal dependence of interfacial viscous modulus, phase angle ([Formula: see text]) as well as higher harmonic components of stress. The number of shear cycles ([Formula: see text]) required for these quantities to reach the steady state value diverges near [Formula: see text]. The steady state values of the third harmonic ([Formula: see text]) show order parameter like behavior indicating the importance of higher order harmonics near the nonequilibrium transition. We further show that the energy dissipation per cycle per unit volume has a marked change near [Formula: see text], consistent with continuum level nonequilibrium shear-transformation-zone model of amorphous viscoplasticity.

Probing shear-induced rearrangements in Fourier space. I. Dynamic light scattering

Understanding the microscopic origin of the rheological behavior of soft matter is a long-lasting endeavour. While early efforts concentrated mainly on the relationship between rheology and structure, current research focuses on the role of microscopic dynamics. We present in two companion papers a thorough discussion of how Fourier space-based methods may be coupled to rheology to shed light on the relationship between the microscopic dynamics and the mechanical response of soft systems. In this first companion paper, we report a theoretical, numerical and experimental investigation of dynamic light scattering coupled to rheology. While in ideal solids and simple viscous fluids the displacement field under a shear deformation is purely affine, additional non-affine displacements arise in many situations of great interest, for example in elastically heterogeneous materials or due to plastic rearrangements. We show how affine and non-affine displacements can be separately resolved by dynamic light scattering, and discuss in detail the effect of several non-idealities in typical experiments.

Probing shear-induced rearrangements in Fourier space. II. Differential dynamic microscopy

We discuss in two companion papers how Fourier-space measurements may be coupled to rheological tests in order to elucidate the relationship between mechanical properties and microscopic dynamics in soft matter. In this second companion paper, we focus on Differential Dynamic Microscopy (DDM) under shear. We highlight the analogies and the differences with dynamic light scattering coupled to rheology, providing a theoretical approach and practical guidelines to separate the contributions to DDM arising from the affine and the non-affine part of the microscopic displacement field. We show that in DDM under shear the coherence of the illuminating source plays a key role, determining the effective sample thickness that is probed. Our theoretical analysis is validated by experiments on 2D samples and 3D gels.

Particle localization and hyperuniformity of polymer-grafted nanoparticle materials

The properties of materials largely reflect the degree and character of the localization of the molecules comprising them so that the study and characterization of particle localization has central significance in both fundamental science and material design. Soft materials are often comprised of deformable molecules and many of their unique properties derive from the distinct nature of particle localization. We study localization in a model material composed of soft particles, hard nanoparticles with grafted layers of polymers, where the molecular characteristics of the grafted layers allow us to "tune" the softness of their interactions. Soft particles are particular interesting because spatial localization can occur such that density fluctuations on large length scales are suppressed, while the material is disordered at intermediate length scales; such materials are called "disordered hyperuniform". We use molecular dynamics simulation to study a liquid composed of polymer-grafted nanoparticles (GNP), which exhibit a reversible self-assembly into dynamic polymeric GNP structures below a temperature threshold, suggesting a liquid-gel transition. We calculate a number of spatial and temporal correlations and we find a significant suppression of density fluctuations upon cooling at large length scales, making these materials promising for the practical fabrication of "hyperuniform" materials.

Irreversibility transition of colloidal polycrystals under cyclic deformation

Cyclically loaded disordered particle systems, such as granular packings and amorphous media, display a non-equilibrium phase transition towards irreversibility. Here, we investigate numerically the cyclic deformation of a colloidal polycrystal with impurities and reveal a transition to irreversible behavior driven by the displacement of dislocations. At the phase transition we observe enhanced particle diffusion, system size effects and broadly distributed strain bursts. In addition to provide an analogy between the deformation of amorphous and polycrystalline materials, our results allow to reinterpret Zener pinning of grain boundaries as a way to prevent the onset of irreversible crystal ordering.

Colloidal polycrystalline monolayers under oscillatory shear

In this paper we probe the structural response to oscillatory shear deformations of polycrystalline monolayers of soft repulsive colloids with varying area fraction over a broad range of frequencies and amplitudes. The particles are confined at a fluid interface, sheared using a magnetic microdisk, and imaged through optical microscopy. The structural and mechanical response of soft materials is highly dependent on their microstructure. If crystals are well understood and deform through the creation and mobilization of specific defects, the situation is much more complex for disordered jammed materials, where identifying structural motifs defining plastically rearranging regions remains an elusive task. Our materials fall between these two classes and allow the identification of clear pathways for structural evolution. In particular, we demonstrate that large enough strains are able to fluidize the system, identifying critical strains that fulfill a local Lindemann criterion. Conversely, smaller strains lead to localized and erratic irreversible particle rearrangements due to the motion of structural defects. In this regime, oscillatory shear promotes defect annealing and leads to the growth of large crystalline domains. Numerical simulations help identify the population of rearranging particles with those exhibiting the largest deviatoric stresses and indicate that structural evolution proceeds towards the minimization of the stress stored in the system. The particles showing high deviatoric stresses are localized around grain boundaries and defects, providing a simple criterion to spot regions likely to rearrange plastically under oscillatory shear.

A stress-controlled shear cell for small-angle light scattering and microscopy

We develop and test a stress-controlled, parallel plates shear cell that can be coupled to an optical microscope or a small angle light scattering setup, for simultaneous investigation of the rheological response and the microscopic structure of soft materials under an imposed shear stress. In order to minimize friction, the cell is based on an air bearing linear stage, the stress is applied through a contactless magnetic actuator, and the strain is measured through optical sensors. We discuss the contributions of inertia and of the small residual friction to the measured signal and demonstrate the performance of our device in both oscillating and step stress experiments on a variety of viscoelastic materials.

Hyperdiffusive Dynamics in Newtonian Nanoparticle Fluids

Hyperdiffusive relaxations in soft glassy materials are typically associated with out-of-equilibrium states, and nonequilibrium physics and aging are often invoked in explaining their origins. Here, we report on hyperdiffusive motion in model soft materials comprised of single-component polymer-tethered nanoparticles, which exhibit a readily accessible Newtonian flow regime. In these materials, polymer-mediated interactions lead to strong nanoparticle correlations, hyperdiffusive relaxations, and unusual variations of properties with temperature. We propose that hyperdiffusive relaxations in such materials can arise naturally from nonequilibrium or non-Brownian volume fluctuations forced by equilibrium thermal rearrangements of the particle pair orientations corresponding to equilibrated shear modes.

Viscoelasticity of colloidal polycrystals doped with impurities

We investigate how the microstructure of a colloidal polycrystal influences its linear visco-elasticity. We use thermosensitive copolymer micelles that arrange in water in a cubic crystalline lattice, yielding a colloidal polycrystal. The polycrystal is doped with a small amount of nanoparticles, of size comparable to that of the micelles, which behave as impurities and thus partially segregate in the grain boundaries. We show that the shear elastic modulus only depends on the packing of the micelles and varies neither with the presence of nanoparticles nor with the crystal microstructure. By contrast, we find that the loss modulus is strongly affected by the presence of nanoparticles. A comparison between rheology data and small-angle neutron-scattering data suggests that the loss modulus is dictated by the total amount of nanoparticles in the grain boundaries, which in turn depends on the sample microstructure.

Role of disorder in finite-amplitude shear of a 2D jammed material

A material's response to small but finite deformations can reveal the roots of its response to much larger deformations. Here, we identify commonalities in the responses of 2D soft jammed solids with different amounts of disorder. We cyclically shear the materials while tracking their constituent particles, in experiments that feature a stable population of repeated structural relaxations. Using bidisperse particle sizes creates a more amorphous material, while monodisperse sizes yield a more polycrystalline one. We find that the materials' responses are very similar, both at the macroscopic, mechanical level and in the microscopic motions of individual particles. However, both locally and in bulk, crystalline arrangements of particles are stiffer (greater elastic modulus) and less likely to rearrange. Our work supports the idea of a common description for the responses of a wide array of materials.

Relaxation in yield stress systems through elastically interacting activated events

We study consequences of long-range elasticity in thermally assisted dynamics of yield stress materials. Within a two-dimensional mesoscopic model we calculate the mean-square displacement and the dynamical structure factor for tracer particle trajectories. The ballistic regime at short time scales is associated with a compressed exponential decay in the dynamical structure factor, followed by a subdiffusive crossover prior to the onset of diffusion. We relate this crossover to spatiotemporal correlations and thus go beyond established mean field predictions.
