Large suppression of quantum fluctuations of light from a single emitter by an optical nanostructure

Resonance fluorescence engineering in hybrid systems consist of biexciton quantum dots and anisotropic metasurfaces

The resonance fluorescence properties in the steady-state regime are investigated for a driven cascaded exciton-biexciton quantum dot coupled to the two-dimensional black phosphorus metasurfaces. It is shown that for the material parameters under consideration, both the elliptic and hyperbolic dispersion patterns of the surface plasmon modes are achievable according to the variation of the carrier concentration. Further study on the Purcell factor indicates unequal enhancements in the spontaneous decay of the orthogonal in-plane dipoles. Motivated by this intriguing phenomenon, we then investigate the steady-state properties of the driven quantum dot, where the populations of the dressed levels are highly tunable by engineering the anisotropy of the surfaces. As a result, the manipulation of the carrier concentration will lead to strong modifications in the resonance fluorescence. Under certain conditions, one can observe the squeezing of two-mode noise spectra with different resonances and polarizations. Although at the expense of declines in the photon-sideband detunings, it is feasible to enhance the two-mode squeezing by gate doping. Our proposal can be easily extended to other hybrid systems containing anisotropic metasurfaces, which are important for the development of quantum information science.

Selective mode excitations and spontaneous emission engineering in quantum emitter-photonic structure coupled systems

We study the excitation conditions of the supported field modes, as well as the spontaneous decay property of a two-level quantum emitter coupled to photonic structures containing topological insulators (TIs) and left-handed materials. Within the proper field quantization scheme, the spontaneous decay rates of dipoles with different polarizations are expressed in forms of the Green's functions. We find that in the proposed structure, the variation in the topological magnetoelectric polarizability (TMP) has a deterministic effect on the excitation of different field modes. As the result, the spontaneous decay property of the quantum emitter can be engineered. For a dipole placed in different spatial regions, the spontaneous decay feature indicates a dominant contribution from the waveguide modes, the surface plasmon modes or the free vacuum modes. Moreover, a special kind of the surface plasmon modes displaying asymmetric density of states at the interfaces, becomes legal in the presence of nontrivial TIs. These phenomena manifest the feasibility in controlling dipole emissions via manipulations of the topological magnetoelectric (TME) effect. Our results have potential applications in quantum technologies relied on the accurate control over light-matter interactions.

Plexcitonic Quantum Light Emission from Nanoparticle-on-Mirror Cavities

We investigate the quantum-optical properties of the light emitted by a nanoparticle-on-mirror cavity filled with a single quantum emitter. Inspired by recent experiments, we model a dark-field setup and explore the photon statistics of the scattered light under grazing laser illumination. Exploiting analytical solutions to Maxwell's equations, we quantize the nanophotonic cavity fields and describe the formation of plasmon-exciton polaritons (or plexcitons) in the system. This way, we reveal that the rich plasmonic spectrum of the nanocavity offers unexplored mechanisms for nonclassical light generation that are more efficient than the resonant interaction between the emitter natural transition and the brightest optical mode. Specifically, we find three different sample configurations in which strongly antibunched light is produced. Finally, we illustrate the power of our approach by showing that the introduction of a second emitter in the platform can enhance photon correlations further.

Impact of the Interband Transitions in Gold and Silver on the Dynamics of Propagating and Localized Surface Plasmons

Understanding and modeling of a surface-plasmon phenomenon on lossy metals interfaces based on simplified models of dielectric function lead to problems when confronted with reality. For a realistic description of lossy metals, such as gold and silver, in the optical range of the electromagnetic spectrum and in the adjacent spectral ranges it is necessary to account not only for ohmic losses but also for the radiative losses resulting from the frequency-dependent interband transitions. We give a detailed analysis of Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPPs) and Localized Surface Plasmons (LPSs) supported by such realistic metal/dielectric interfaces based on the dispersion relations both for flat and spherical gold and silver interfaces in the extended frequency and nanoparticle size ranges. The study reveals the region of anomalous dispersion for a silver flat interface in the near UV spectral range and high-quality factors for larger nanoparticles. We show that the frequency-dependent interband transition accounted in the dielectric function in a way allowing reproducing well the experimentally measured indexes of refraction does exert the pronounced impact not only on the properties of SPP and LSP for gold interfaces but also, with the weaker but not negligible impact, on the corresponding silver interfaces in the optical ranges and the adjacent spectral ranges.

Small slot waveguide rings for on-chip quantum optical circuits

Nanophotonic interfaces between single emitters and light promise to enable new quantum optical technologies. Here, we use a combination of finite element simulations and analytic quantum theory to investigate the interaction of various quantum emitters with slot-waveguide rings. We predict that for rings with radii as small as 1.44 μm, with a Q-factor of 27,900, near-unity emitter-waveguide coupling efficiencies and emission enhancements on the order of 1300 can be achieved. By tuning the ring geometry or introducing losses, we show that realistic emitter-ring systems can be made to be either weakly or strongly coupled, so that we can observe Rabi oscillations in the decay dynamics even for micron-sized rings. Moreover, we demonstrate that slot waveguide rings can be used to directionally couple emission, again with near-unity efficiency. Our results pave the way for integrated solid-state quantum circuits involving various emitters.
