Magnetic polarization of the americium J=0 ground state in AmFe(2)

Synthesis, Characterization, and Stability of Two Americium Vanadates, AmVO3 and AmVO4

In search for chemically stable americium compounds with high power densities for radioisotope sources for space applications, AmVO₃ and AmVO₄ were prepared by a solid-state reaction. We present here their crystal structure at room temperature solved by powder X-ray diffraction combined with Rietveld refinement. Their thermal and self-irradiation stabilities have been studied. The oxidation states of americium were confirmed by the Am M₅ edge high-resolution X-ray absorption near-edge structure (HR-XANES) technique. Such ceramics are investigated as potential power sources for space applications like radioisotope thermoelectric generators, and they have to endure extreme conditions including vacuum, high or low temperatures, and internal irradiation. Thus, their stability under self-irradiation and heat treatment in inert and oxidizing atmospheres was tested and discussed relative to other compounds with a high content of americium.

Evidence of the Anomalous Fluctuating Magnetic State by Pressure-Driven 4f Valence Change in EuNiGe3

In rare-earth compounds with valence fluctuation, the proximity of the 4f level to the Fermi energy leads to instabilities of the charge configuration and the magnetic moment. Here, we provide direct experimental evidence for an induced magnetic polarization of the Eu³⁺ atomic shell with J = 0, due to intra-atomic exchange and spin-orbital coupling interactions with the Eu²⁺ atomic shell. By applying external pressure, a transition from antiferromagnetic to a fluctuating behavior in EuNiGe₃ single crystals is probed. Magnetic polarization is observed for both valence states of Eu²⁺ and Eu³⁺ across the entire pressure range. The anomalous magnetism is discussed in terms of a homogeneous intermediate valence state where frustrated Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya couplings are enhanced by the onset of spin-orbital interaction and engender a chiral spin-liquid-like precursor.

X-ray synchrotron radiation studies of actinide materials

By reviewing a selection of X-ray diffraction (XRD), resonant X-ray scattering (RXS), X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), resonant and non-resonant inelastic scattering (RIXS, NIXS), and dispersive inelastic scattering (IXS) experiments, the potential of synchrotron radiation techniques in studying lattice and electronic structure, hybridization effects, multipolar order and lattice dynamics in actinide materials is demonstrated.

[UF6 ]2- : A Molecular Hexafluorido Actinide(IV) Complex with Compensating Spin and Orbital Magnetic Moments

The first structurally characterized hexafluorido complex of a tetravalent actinide ion, the [UF₆ ]^2- anion, is reported in the (NEt₄ )₂ [UF₆ ]⋅2 H₂ O salt (1). The weak magnetic response of 1 results from both U^IV spin and orbital contributions, as established by combining X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectroscopy and bulk magnetization measurements. The spin and orbital moments are virtually identical in magnitude, but opposite in sign, resulting in an almost perfect cancellation, which is corroborated by ab initio calculations. This work constitutes the first experimental demonstration of a seemingly non-magnetic molecular actinide complex carrying sizable spin and orbital magnetic moments.

Probing Magnetism in the Vortex Phase of PuCoGa_{5} by X-Ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism

We measure x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectra at the Pu M_{4,5} absorption edges from a newly prepared high-quality single crystal of the heavy-fermion superconductor ^{242}PuCoGa_{5}, exhibiting a critical temperature T_{c}=18.7  K. The experiment probes the vortex phase below T_{c} and shows that an external magnetic field induces a Pu 5f magnetic moment at 2 K equal to the temperature-independent moment measured in the normal phase up to 300 K by a superconducting quantum interference device. This observation is in agreement with theoretical models claiming that the Pu atoms in PuCoGa_{5} have a nonmagnetic singlet ground state resulting from the hybridization of the conduction electrons with the intermediate-valence 5f electronic shell. Unexpectedly, XMCD spectra show that the orbital component of the 5f magnetic moment increases significantly between 30 and 2 K; the antiparallel spin component increases as well, leaving the total moment practically constant. We suggest that this indicates a low-temperature breakdown of the complete Kondo-like screening of the local 5f moment.

Magnetic Circular Dichroism in X-Ray Emission from Ferromagnets

The existence of novel magnetic circular dichroism in core-level x-ray emission is reported. By means of circular polarization analysis, the dichroic effect of the Fe Kα_{1} emission spectrum is measured on an Fe single crystal. The observed dichroic effect (12%) is remarkably large, if one takes into account the small dichroic effect (about 0.5%) in the conventional K-edge absorption spectroscopy of 3d transition metal elements. The mechanism is ascribed to exchange splitting of the 2p level possessing large spin-orbit coupling. This new magnetooptical effect enables us to explore a variety of new research subjects in the magnetism of 3d transition metals and their compounds by fully utilizing its large dichroic effect, the true bulk sensitivity of hard x rays, and the element selectivity of core-level spectroscopy.
