Magnetic Vortex Induced by Nonmagnetic Impurity in Frustrated Magnets

Thickness-Dependent Topological Hall Effect in 2D Cr5 Si3 Nanosheets with Noncollinear Magnetic Phase

Antiferromagnets with noncollinear spin order are expected to exhibit unconventional electromagnetic response, such as spin Hall effects, chiral abnormal, quantum Hall effect, and topological Hall effect. Here, 2D thickness-controlled and high-quality Cr5 Si3 nanosheets that are compatible with the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technology are synthesized by chemical vapor deposition method. The angular dependence of electromagnetic transport properties of Cr5 Si3 nanosheets is investigated using a physical property measurement system, and an obvious topological Hall effect (THE) appears at a large tilted magnetic field, which results from the noncollinear magnetic structure of the Cr5 Si3 nanosheet. The Cr5 Si3 nanosheets exhibit distinct thickness-dependent perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), and the THE only emerges in the specific thickness range with moderate PMA. This work provides opportunities for exploring fundamental spin-related physical mechanisms of noncollinear antiferromagnet in ultrathin limit.

Topological spin crystals by itinerant frustration

Spin textures with nontrivial topology, such as vortices and skyrmions, have attracted attention as a source of unconventional magnetic, transport, and optical phenomena. Recently, a new generation of topological spin textures has been extensively studied in itinerant magnets; in contrast to the conventional ones induced, e.g., by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in noncentrosymmetric systems, they are characterized by extremely short magnetic periods and stable even in centrosymmetric systems. Here we review such new types of topological spin textures with particular emphasis on their stabilization mechanism. Focusing on the interplay between charge and spin degrees of freedom in itinerant electron systems, we show that itinerant frustration, which is the competition among electron-mediated interactions, plays a central role in stabilizing a variety of topological spin crystals including a skyrmion crystal with unconventional high skyrmion number, meron crystals, and hedgehog crystals. We also show that the essential ingredients in the itinerant frustration are represented by bilinear and biquadratic spin interactions in momentum space. This perspective not only provides a unified understanding of the unconventional topological spin crystals but also stimulates further exploration of exotic topological phenomena in itinerant magnets.

Current-Induced Helicity Reversal of a Single Skyrmionic Bubble Chain in a Nanostructured Frustrated Magnet

Helicity indicates the in-plane magnetic-moment swirling direction of a skyrmionic configuration. The ability to reverse the helicity of a skyrmionic bubble via purely electrical means has been predicted in frustrated magnetic systems; however, it has been challenging to observe this experimentally. The current-driven helicity reversal of the skyrmionic bubble in a nanostructured frustrated Fe₃ Sn₂ magnet is experimentally demonstrated. The critical current density required to trigger the helicity reversal is 10⁹ -10¹⁰ A m^-2 , with a corresponding pulse-width varying from 1 µs to 100 ns. Computational simulations reveal that both the pinning effect and dipole-dipole interaction play a crucial role in the helicity reversal process.

Skyrmion Crystals and Phase Transitions in Magneto-Ferroelectric Superlattices: Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya Interaction in a Frustrated J1 − J2 Model

The formation of a skyrmion crystal and its phase transition are studied, taking into account the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya (DM) interaction at the interface between a ferroelectric layer and a magnetic layer in a superlattice. Frustration is introduced in both magnetic and ferroelectric films. The films have a simple cubic lattice structure. The spins inside the magnetic layers are Heisenberg spins interacting with each other via nearest-neighbor (NN) exchange J m and next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) exchange J 2 m . The polarizations in the ferroelectric layers are assumed to be of Ising type with NN and NNN interactions J f and J 2 f . At the magnetoelectric interface, a DM interaction J m f between spins and polarizations is supposed. The spin configuration in the ground state is calculated by the steepest descent method. In an applied magnetic field H perpendicular to the layers, we show that the formation of skyrmions at the magnetoelectric interface is strongly enhanced by the frustration brought about by the NNN antiferromagnetic interactions J 2 m and J 2 f . Various physical quantities at finite temperatures are obtained by Monte Carlo simulations. We show the critical temperature, the order parameters of magnetic and ferroelectric layers as functions of the interface DM coupling, the applied magnetic field, and J 2 m and J 2 f . The phase transition to the disordered phase is studied in detail.

Skyrmion dynamics in a frustrated ferromagnetic film and current-induced helicity locking-unlocking transition

The helicity-orbital coupling is an intriguing feature of magnetic skyrmions in frustrated magnets. Here we explore the skyrmion dynamics in a frustrated magnet based on the J₁-J₂-J₃ classical Heisenberg model explicitly by including the dipole-dipole interaction. The skyrmion energy acquires a helicity dependence due to the dipole-dipole interaction, resulting in the current-induced translational motion with a fixed helicity. The lowest-energy states are the degenerate Bloch-type states, which can be used for building the binary memory. By increasing the driving current, the helicity locking-unlocking transition occurs, where the translational motion changes to the rotational motion. Furthermore, we demonstrate that two skyrmions can spontaneously form a bound state. The separation of the bound state forced by a driving current is also studied. In addition, we show the annihilation of a pair of skyrmion and antiskyrmion. Our results reveal the distinctive frustrated skyrmions may enable viable applications in topological magnetism.

Exploring the helicity-orbital coupling induced skyrmion properties is essential for the spintronic applications. Here the authors report the current controlled skyrmions and antiskyrmions dynamics with locking-unlocking helicity in frustrated magnets by including the dipole-dipole interaction in their model.

Skyrmion Knots in Frustrated Magnets

A magnetic Skyrmion is a stable two-dimensional nanoparticle describing a localized winding of the magnetization in certain magnetic materials. Skyrmions are the subject of intense experimental and theoretical investigation and have potential technological spintronic applications. Here we show that numerical computations of frustrated magnets predict that Skyrmions can be tied into knots to form new stable three-dimensional nanoparticles. These stable equilibria of twisted loops of Skyrmion strings have an integer-valued topological charge, known as the Hopf charge, that counts the number of particles. Rings are formed for low values of this charge, but for higher values it is energetically favorable to form links and then knots. This computational study provides a novel impetus for future experimental work on these nanoknots and an exploration of the potential technological applications of three-dimensional nanoparticles encoding knotted magnetization.

Frustration and chiral orderings in correlated electron systems

The term frustration refers to lattice systems whose ground state cannot simultaneously satisfy all the interactions. Frustration is an important property of correlated electron systems, which stems from the sign of loop products (similar to Wilson products) of interactions on a lattice. It was early recognized that geometric frustration can produce rather exotic physical behaviors, such as macroscopic ground state degeneracy and helimagnetism. The interest in frustrated systems was renewed two decades later in the context of spin glasses and the emergence of magnetic superstructures. In particular, Phil Anderson's proposal of a quantum spin liquid ground state for a two-dimensional lattice S  =  1/2 Heisenberg magnet generated a very active line of research that still continues. As a result of these early discoveries and conjectures, the study of frustrated models and materials exploded over the last two decades. Besides the large efforts triggered by the search of quantum spin liquids, it was also recognized that frustration plays a crucial role in a vast spectrum of physical phenomena arising from correlated electron materials. Here we review some of these phenomena with particular emphasis on the stabilization of chiral liquids and non-coplanar magnetic orderings. In particular, we focus on the ubiquitous interplay between magnetic and charge degrees of freedom in frustrated correlated electron systems and on the role of anisotropy. We demonstrate that these basic ingredients lead to exotic phenomena, such as, charge effects in Mott insulators, the stabilization of single magnetic vortices, as well as vortex and skyrmion crystals, and the emergence of different types of chiral liquids. In particular, these orderings appear more naturally in itinerant magnets with the potential of inducing a very large anomalous Hall effect.
