Self-Channeling of High-Power Long-Wave Infrared Pulses in Atomic Gases

Powerful terahertz waves from long-wavelength infrared laser filaments

Strong terahertz (THz) electric and magnetic transients open up new horizons in science and applications. We review the most promising way of achieving sub-cycle THz pulses with extreme field strengths. During the nonlinear propagation of two-color mid-infrared and far-infrared ultrashort laser pulses, long, and thick plasma strings are produced, where strong photocurrents result in intense THz transients. The corresponding THz electric and magnetic field strengths can potentially reach the gigavolt per centimeter and kilotesla levels, respectively. The intensities of these THz fields enable extreme nonlinear optics and relativistic physics. We offer a comprehensive review, starting from the microscopic physical processes of light-matter interactions with mid-infrared and far-infrared ultrashort laser pulses, the theoretical and numerical advances in the nonlinear propagation of these laser fields, and the most important experimental demonstrations to date.

Self-Guiding of Long-Wave Infrared Laser Pulses Mediated by Avalanche Ionization

Nonlinear self-guided propagation of intense long-wave infrared (LWIR) laser pulses is of significant recent interest, as it promises high power transmission without beam breakup and multifilamentation. Central to self-guiding is the mechanism for the arrest of self-focusing collapse. Here, we show that discrete avalanche sites centered on submicron aerosols can arrest self-focusing, providing a new mechanism for self-guided propagation of moderate intensity LWIR pulses in outdoor environments. Our conclusions are supported by simulations of LWIR pulse propagation using an effective index approach that incorporates the time-resolved plasma dynamics of discrete avalanche breakdown sites.

Absolute Measurement of Laser Ionization Yield in Atmospheric Pressure Range Gases over 14 Decades

Strong-field ionization is central to intense laser-matter interactions. However, standard ionization measurements have been limited to extremely low density gas samples, ignoring potential high density effects. Here, we measure strong-field ionization in atmospheric pressure range air, N_{2}, and Ar over 14 decades of absolute yield, using mid-IR picosecond avalanche multiplication of single electrons. Our results are consistent with theoretical rates for isolated atoms and molecules and quantify the ubiquitous presence of ultralow concentration gas contaminants that can significantly affect laser-gas interactions.

Two-stage filamentation of 10 μm pulses as a broadband infrared backlighter in the atmosphere

We identify a two-stage filamentation regime for high-power 10 μm multipicosecond pulses propagating in the atmosphere. The first low-intensity stage is mainly regularized by ionization through excitation induced dephasing, which can lead to strong pulse shortening downstream. This shortening in turn causes a significant reduction of the many-body induced plasma, which changes the dynamics drastically. As a result, a distinct second stage is predicted where peak intensities are clamped at 1 order of magnitude higher than in the first stage. The complex dynamics found in the second stage can result in the spatial and temporal breakup of the wavepacket, reduction of ionization losses, and extreme spectral broadening.

Memory effects in the long-wave infrared avalanche ionization of gases: a review of recent progress

There are currently intense efforts being directed towards extending the range and energy of long distance nonlinear pulse propagation in the atmosphere by moving to longer infrared wavelengths, with the purpose of mitigating the effects of turbulence. In addition, picosecond and longer pulse durations are being used to increase the pulse energy. While both of these tacks promise improvements in applications, such as remote sensing and directed energy, they open up fundamental issues regarding the standard model used to calculate the nonlinear optical properties of dilute gases. Amongst these issues is that for longer wavelengths and longer pulse durations, exponential growth of the laser-generated electron density, the so-called avalanche ionization, can limit the propagation range via nonlinear absorption and plasma defocusing. It is therefore important for the continued development of the field to assess the theory and role of avalanche ionization in gases for longer wavelengths. Here, after an overview of the standard model, we present a microscopically motivated approach for the analysis of avalanche ionization in gases that extends beyond the standard model and we contend is key for deepening our understanding of long distance propagation at long infrared wavelengths. Our new approach involves the mean electron kinetic energy, the plasma temperature, and the free electron density as dynamic variables. The rate of avalanche ionization is shown to depend on the full time history of the pulsed excitation, as opposed to the standard model in which the rate is proportional to the instantaneous intensity. Furthermore, the new approach has the added benefit that it is no more computationally intensive than the standard one. The resulting memory effects and some of their measurable physical consequences are demonstrated for the example of long-wavelength infrared avalanche ionization and long distance high-intensity pulse propagation in air. Our hope is that this report in progress will stimulate further discussion that will elucidate the physics and simulation of avalanche ionization at long infrared wavelengths and advance the field.

Impact-ionization mediated self-focusing of long-wavelength infrared pulses in gases

We numerically investigate the propagation dynamics of intense long-wavelength infrared pulses in a weakly ionized argon gas and show that the pulses undergo self-focusing due to the transverse variations of electron-impact ionization caused by quivering electrons. We demonstrate this plasma-induced self-focusing at a power much lower than the critical power for Kerr self-focusing, and find that it can be controlled by the initial electron density and pulse duration.

Role of electron back action on photons in hybridizing double-layer graphene plasmons with localized photons

In this paper, we deal with the electromagnetic coupling between an incident surface-plasmon-polariton wave and relativistic electrons in two graphene layers. Our previous investigation was limited to single-layer graphene (Iurov et al 2017 Phys. Rev. B 96 081408). However, the present work, is both an expanded and extended version of this previous Phys. Rev. B paper after having included very detailed theoretical formalisms and extensive comparisons of results from either one or two graphene layers embedded in a dielectric medium. The additional retarded Coulomb interaction between two graphene layers will compete with the coupling between the single graphene layer and the surface of a conductor. Consequently, some distinctive features, such as triply-hybridized absorption peaks and a new acoustic-like graphene plasmon mode within the anticrossing region, have been found for the double-layer graphene system. Physically, our theory is self-consistent, in comparison with a commonly adopted perturbative theory, for studying hybrid light-plasmon modes and the electron back action on photons. Instead of usual radiation or grating-deflection field coupling, a surface-plasmon-polariton localized field coupling is introduced with completely different dispersion relations for radiative (small wave numbers) and evanescent (large wave numbers) field modes. Technically, the exactly calculated effective scattering matrix for this theory can be employed to construct an effective-medium theory in order to improve the accuracy of the well-known finite-difference time-domain method for solving Maxwell's equations numerically. Practically, the predicted triply-hybridized absorption peaks can excite polaritons only, giving rise to a possible polariton-condensation based laser.

Multi-terawatt 10 μm pulse atmospheric delivery over multiple Rayleigh ranges

We predict that long wavelength self-trapped multi-terawatt pulses can be sustained over multiple kilometers in the atmosphere. Unlike filaments, these pulses exhibit low loss propagation and retain most of their launch power at range. A novel mechanism involving an aggregation of weakly linear and nonlinear cumulative optical responses is shown to be responsible and is dominated by an ultrafast dynamical lensing resulting from a field intensity driven many-body Coulomb mediated free electron polarization associated with spatially separated species in the gas. An initial few picosecond pulse can compress down to 140 fs over multiple kilometers.

Long-wavelength infrared solitons in air

Dispersion and optical nonlinearity of atmospheric air in the long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) range are shown to enable unique soliton dynamics in freely propagating laser beams. Analysis of spatiotemporal LWIR waveform evolution in air reveals soliton self-compression scenarios whereby ultrashort LWIR subterawatt pulses can be compressed to single-cycle terawatt field waveforms.
