Strong Evidence for Nucleon Resonances near 1900 MeV

N* Experiments and what they tell us about Strong QCD Physics

I give an overview on experimental studies of the spectrum and the structure of the excited states of the nucleon and what we can learn about their in ternal structure. One focus is on the efforts to obtain a more complete picture of the light-quark baryon exci tation spectrum employing electromagnetic beams that will allow us to draw some conclusions on the symme tries underlying the spectrum. For the higher mass ex citations, the full employment of coupled channel ap proaches is essential when searching for new excited states in the large amounts of data already accumulated in different channels involving a variety of polarization observables. The other focus is on the study of transition form factors and helicity amplitudes and their de pendences on Q2, especially on some of the more promi nent resonances, especially Δ(1232)3/2+, N(1440)1/2+, and negative parity states N(1535)1/2-, and N(1675)5/2-.These were obtained in pion and eta electroproduction experi ments off proton targets and have already led to further insights in the active degrees-of-freedom as a function of the distance scale involved.

Two Pion Photo- and Electroproduction with CLAS

Exclusive π+π-p photo- and electroproduction data from CLAS have considerably extended the information on the spectrum and structure of nucleon resonances. The data from the π+π-p and Nπ channels have provided results on the electrocouplings of most resonances in the mass region up to 1.8 GeV and at photon virtualities up to 5.0 GeV2. The recent CLAS data on π+π-p photoproduction have improved knowledge on the photocouplings of nucleon resonances in the mass range of 1.6 GeV < MN* < 2.0 GeV and on their decays to the πΔ and ρp final hadron states. Analyses of the combined π+π-p photo- and electroproduction data have revealed evidence for the candidate-state N’(1720)3/2+. The new results on the nucleon resonance spectrum, electroexcitation amplitudes from analysis of the CLAS π+π-p photo- and electroproduction data, and their impact on the exploration of strong QCD are presented.

Empirical Consequences of Emergent Mass

The Lagrangian that defines quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the strong interaction piece of the Standard Model, appears very simple. Nevertheless, it is responsible for an astonishing array of high-level phenomena with enormous apparent complexity, e.g., the existence, number and structure of atomic nuclei. The source of all these things can be traced to emergent mass, which might itself be QCD’s self-stabilising mechanism. A background to this perspective is provided, presenting, inter alia, a discussion of the gluon mass and QCD’s process-independent effective charge and highlighting an array of observable expressions of emergent mass, ranging from its manifestations in pion parton distributions to those in nucleon electromagnetic form factors.

Kaon Photoproduction and the Λ Decay Parameter α_{-}

The weak decay parameter α_{-} of the Λ is an important quantity for the extraction of polarization observables in various experiments. Moreover, in combination with α_{+} from Λ[over ¯] decay it provides a measure for matter-antimatter asymmetry. The weak decay parameter also affects the decay parameters of the Ξ and Ω baryons and, in general, any quantity in which the polarization of the Λ is relevant. The recently reported value by the BESIII Collaboration of 0.750(9)(4) is significantly larger than the previous PDG value of 0.642(13) that had been accepted and used for over 40 years. In this work we make an independent estimate of α_{-}, using an extensive set of polarization data measured in kaon photoproduction in the baryon resonance region and constraints set by spin algebra. The obtained value is 0.721(6)(5). The result is corroborated by multiple statistical tests as well as a modern phenomenological model, showing that our new value yields the best description of the data in question. Our analysis supports the new BESIII finding that α_{-} is significantly larger than the previous PDG value. Any experimental quantity relying on the value of α_{-} should therefore be reconsidered.
