Subcritical Thermal Convection of Liquid Metals in a Rapidly Rotating Sphere

Thermal convection in rotating spherical geometry: A numerical overview of the transitions from periodic axisymmetric to temporally complex three-dimensional flows

The aim of this work is to elucidate the type of transitions that take place when the periodic axisymmetric flows, which can set up at the onset of thermal convection in rotating fluid spheres, lose stability and to study the behavior of the new stable velocity fields until the flows become temporally chaotic. The computations for Prandtl numbers Pr=0.715, 0.1, and 0.01 show that when it decreases, the range of stability of these flows becomes narrower because the kinetic energy of the axisymmetric periodic solutions increases very fast, favoring their instability. From the stability analysis and direct three-dimensional simulations it is found that the transition to stable quasiperiodic flows through Neimark-Sacker bifurcations is supercritical when Pr≥0.01. For Pr=0.1 two branches of stable periodic flows emerging from the conduction state have been found due to the proximity to a double Hopf bifurcation. However, only the branches bifurcating from the azimuthal rotating waves are stable at large Rayleigh numbers. Far from this bifurcation the stable flows keep the influence of the axisymmetric dynamics up to large Rayleigh numbers. For small Pr they behave as repeated transients of mixed dynamics, controlled by the azimuthal wave numbers m=0, m=1, and m=2.

Acoustic modes of rapidly rotating ellipsoids subject to centrifugal gravity

The acoustic modes of a rotating fluid-filled cavity can be used to determine the effective rotation rate of a fluid (since the resonant frequencies are modified by the flows). To be accurate, this method requires a prior knowledge of the acoustic modes in rotating fluids. Contrary to the Coriolis force, centrifugal gravity has received much less attention in the experimental context. Motivated by on-going experiments in rotating ellipsoids, we study how global rotation and buoyancy modify the acoustic modes of fluid-filled ellipsoids in isothermal (or isentropic) hydrostatic equilibrium. We go beyond the standard acoustic equation, which neglects solid-body rotation and gravity, by deriving an exact wave equation for the acoustic velocity. We then solve the wave problem using a polynomial spectral method in ellipsoids, which is compared with finite-element solutions of the primitive fluid-dynamic equations. We show that the centrifugal acceleration has measurable effects on the acoustic frequencies when M_Ω≳0.3, where M_Ω is the rotational Mach number defined as the ratio of the sonic and rotational time scales. Such a regime can be reached with experiments rotating at a few tens of Hz by replacing air with a highly compressible gas (e.g., SF₆ or C₄F₈).

Plesio-geostrophy for Earth's core: I. Basic equations, inertial modes and induction

An approximation is developed that lends itself to accurate description of the physics of fluid motions and motional induction on short time scales (e.g. decades), appropriate for planetary cores and in the geophysically relevant limit of very rapid rotation. Adopting a representation of the flow to be columnar (horizontal motions are invariant along the rotation axis), our characterization of the equations leads to the approximation we call plesio-geostrophy, which arises from dedicated forms of integration along the rotation axis of the equations of motion and of motional induction. Neglecting magnetic diffusion, our self-consistent equations collapse all three-dimensional quantities into two-dimensional scalars in an exact manner. For the isothermal magnetic case, a series of fifteen partial differential equations is developed that fully characterizes the evolution of the system. In the case of no forcing and absent viscous damping, we solve for the normal modes of the system, called inertial modes. A comparison with a subset of the known three-dimensional modes that are of the least complexity along the rotation axis shows that the approximation accurately captures the eigenfunctions and associated eigenfrequencies.

Turbulent convective length scale in planetary cores

Convection is a fundamental physical process in the fluid cores of planets. It is the primary transport mechanism for heat and chemical species and the primary energy source for planetary magnetic fields. Key properties of convection-such as the characteristic flow velocity and length scale-are poorly quantified in planetary cores owing to the strong dependence of these properties on planetary rotation, buoyancy driving and magnetic fields, all of which are difficult to model using realistic conditions. In the absence of strong magnetic fields, the convective flows of the core are expected to be in a regime of rapidly rotating turbulence¹, which remains largely unexplored. Here we use a combination of non-magnetic numerical models designed to explore this regime to show that the convective length scale becomes independent of the viscosity when realistic parameter values are approached and is entirely determined by the flow velocity and the planetary rotation. The velocity decreases very rapidly at smaller scales, so this turbulent convective length scale is a lower limit for the energy-carrying length scales in the flow. Using this approach, we can model realistically the dynamics of small non-magnetic cores such as the Moon. Although modelling the conditions of larger planetary cores remains out of reach, the fact that the turbulent convective length scale is independent of the viscosity allows a reliable extrapolation to these objects. For the Earth's core conditions, we find that the turbulent convective length scale in the absence of magnetic fields would be about 30 kilometres, which is orders of magnitude larger than the ten-metre viscous length scale. The need to resolve the numerically inaccessible viscous scale could therefore be relaxed in future more realistic geodynamo simulations, at least in weakly magnetized regions.

Order Out of Chaos: Slowly Reversing Mean Flows Emerge from Turbulently Generated Internal Waves

We demonstrate via direct numerical simulations that a periodic, oscillating mean flow spontaneously develops from turbulently generated internal waves. We consider a minimal physical model where the fluid self-organizes in a convective layer adjacent to a stably stratified one. Internal waves are excited by turbulent convective motions, then nonlinearly interact to produce a mean flow reversing on timescales much longer than the waves' period. Our results demonstrate for the first time that the three-scale dynamics due to convection, waves, and mean flow is generic and hence can occur in many astrophysical and geophysical fluids. We discuss efforts to reproduce the mean flow in reduced models, where the turbulence is bypassed. We demonstrate that wave intermittency, resulting from the chaotic nature of convection, plays a key role in the mean-flow dynamics, which thus cannot be captured using only second-order statistics of the turbulent motions.
