Electron Dynamics Driven by Light-Pulse Derivatives

Zero-Energy Photoelectric Effect

We predict a near-threshold ("zero energy") peak in multiphoton ionization for a dynamical regime where the photon frequency is large compared to the binding energy of the electron. The peak position does not depend on the laser frequency but on the binding energy and the pulse duration. The effect originates from the fact that bound-continuum dipole transitions are stronger than continuum-continuum ones. To clearly observe this zero-energy photoelectric effect, the spectral width of the laser pulse should be comparable to the binding energy of the ionized orbital, and the second ionization potential should be larger than the photon energy. This suggests negative ions as ideal candidates for corresponding experiments.

Effect of pulse duration on the above-threshold ionization of a hydrogen atom irradiated by a 400 nm intense laser

The photoelectron emission spectra generated by the interaction between ultrashort intense laser pulses and atoms can reveal the ultrafast dynamics of electrons. By using the numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in momentum space, the photoelectron emission spectra of atoms irradiated by 400 nm intense lasers with different durations of the pulse has been investigated. In the photoelectron emission spectrum, in addition to the above-threshold ionization peaks due to ionization interference in multiple cycles and the sideband peaks mainly due to the interference of ionized electrons at different moments along the rising edge of the laser pulse envelope, additional peaks of photoelectron emission whose intensity appears to oscillate with the increasing duration of the laser pulse can also be observed. Based on strong-field approximation and the population's analysis of the bound state, it is found that these photoelectron peaks originate from the ionization of the excited state and the oscillations of these peaks are due to the superposition of their peak energy positions with the sideband energy positions. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the energy positions of the maximum intensity of the photoelectron emission spectra move towards the higher energy end as the duration of the driving laser pulse extends. This phenomenon can be attributed to the fact that the main moment of ionization of atoms changes with the increasing duration of the driving laser pulse, thus allowing the real-time ionization of atoms to be probed using photoelectron emission spectra.

Intensity-dependent angular distribution of low-energy electrons generated by intense high-frequency laser pulse

By solving the three-dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger equation, we investigate the angular distributions of the low-energy electrons when an intense high-frequency laser pulse is applied to the hydrogen atom. Our numerical results show that the angular distributions of the low-energy electrons which generated by the nonadiabatic transitions sensitively depend on the laser intensity. The angular distributions evolve from a two-lobe to a four-lobe structure as the laser intensity increases. By analyzing nonadiabatic process in the Kramers-Henneberger frame, we illustrate that this phenomenon is attributed to the intensity-dependent adiabatic evolution of the ground state wavefunction. When the laser intensity further increases, the pathway of nonadiabatic transition from the ground state to the excited state and then to the continuum states is non-negligible, which results in the ring-like structure in the photoelectron momentum distribution. The angular distributions of the low-energy electrons provide a way to monitor the evolution of the electron wavefunction in the intense high frequency laser fields.

Young's Double-Slit Interference in a Hydrogen Atom

We demonstrate the possibility of realizing Young's double-slit interference in a hydrogen atom via ab initio simulations. By exposing the hydrogen atom to a high-frequency intensive laser pulse, the bound state distorts into a dichotomic Kramers-Henneberger state whose photoelectron momentum distribution imprints a double-slit interference structure. The dichotomic hydrogen atom presents molecular peculiarities, such as charge-resonance enhanced ionization, electron spin flipping due to the non-Abelian Berry phase. In return, the photoelectron momentum distribution carrying the double-slit interference structure provides unambiguous evidence on the existence of Kramers-Henneberger states, and thus the adiabatic stabilization.

Quantum control and characterization of ultrafast ionization with orthogonal two-color laser pulses

We study ultrafast ionization dynamics using orthogonally polarized two-color (OTC) laser pulses involving the resonant "first plus second" (ω + 2ω) scheme. The scheme is illustrated by numerical simulations of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation and recording the photoelectron momentum distribution. On the basis of the simulations of this resonant ionization, we identify signatures of the dynamic Autler-Townes effect and dynamic interference, in which their characterization is not possible in the spectral domain. Taking advantage of the OTC scheme we show that these dynamical effects, which occur at the same time scale, can be characterized in momentum space by controlling the spatial quantum interference. In particular, we show that with the use of this control scheme, one can tailor the properties of the control pulse to lead to enhancement of the ionization rate through the Autler-Townes effect without affecting the dynamic interference. This enhancement is shown to result from constructive interferences between partial photoelectron waves having opposite-parity, and found to manifest by symmetry-breaking of the momentum distribution. The scenario is investigated for a prototype of a hydrogen atom and is broadly applicable to other systems. Our findings may have applications for photoelectron interferometers to control the electron dynamics in time and space, and for accurate temporal characterization of attosecond pulses.

Nonadiabatic Molecular Association in Thermal Gases Driven by Radio-Frequency Pulses

The molecular association process in a thermal gas of ^{85}Rb is investigated where the effects of the envelope of the radio-frequency field are taken into account. For experimentally relevant parameters our analysis shows that with increasing pulse length the corresponding molecular conversion efficiency exhibits low-frequency interference fringes which are robust under thermal averaging over a wide range of temperatures. This dynamical interference phenomenon is attributed to Stückelberg phase accumulation between the low-energy continuum states and the dressed molecular state which exhibits a shift proportional to the envelope of the radio-frequency pulse intensity.

Adiabatic Passage to the Continuum: Controlling Ionization with Chirped Laser Pulses

We demonstrate that, by changing the direction of the chirp in vacuum-ultraviolet pulses, one can switch between excitation and ionization with very high contrast, if the carrier frequency of the light is resonant with two bound states. This is a surprising consequence of rapid adiabatic passage if extended to include transitions to the continuum. The chirp phase locks the linear combination of the two resonantly coupled bound states whose ionization amplitudes interfere constructively or destructively depending on the chirp direction under suitable conditions. We derive the phenomenon in a minimal model and verify the effect with calculations for helium as a realistic example.
