Effect of interparticle dipolar interaction on pore clogging during microfiltration

We present numerical investigations on the clogging of adhesive particles carrying electric dipoles at pore scale using an adhesive discrete element method (DEM). Based on the simulation results, the long-range dipolar interaction is reported to promote the clogging process, which is quantified by the bulk permeability, the penetrating particle number, and the particle capture efficiency. A clogging phase diagram is constructed in terms of the Stokes number (St) and the adhesion parameter (Ad) for both neutral and polarized particles. The influence of the dipolar interaction on the clogging-nonclogging transition is then described by the shifted boundary on the diagram. Also, the cake structure is characterized by different mathematical descriptions. A looser structure is formed with the increase of both the short-range adhesion and the long-range dipolar interaction. More ordered structures, such as particle chains, are observed in the presence of the stronger dipolar interaction. Furthermore, fluid stress is found to be essential in the compression and restructuring of the cake structure. Finally, a schematic representation of the cake structure is established, which provides a general physical picture showing the relationship between the cake structure and the particle-scale interactions.

Multiscale dynamics of colloidal deposition and erosion in porous media

Diverse processes-e.g., environmental pollution, groundwater remediation, oil recovery, filtration, and drug delivery-involve the transport of colloidal particles in porous media. Using confocal microscopy, we directly visualize this process in situ and thereby identify the fundamental mechanisms by which particles are distributed throughout a medium. At high injection pressures, hydrodynamic stresses cause particles to be continually deposited on and eroded from the solid matrix-notably, forcing them to be distributed throughout the entire medium. By contrast, at low injection pressures, the relative influence of erosion is suppressed, causing particles to localize near the inlet of the medium. Unexpectedly, these macroscopic distribution behaviors depend on imposed pressure in similar ways for particles of different charges, although the pore-scale distribution of deposition is sensitive to particle charge. These results reveal how the multiscale interactions between fluid, particles, and the solid matrix control how colloids are distributed in a porous medium.

Geometry-induced nonequilibrium phase transition in sandpiles

We study the sandpile model on three-dimensional spanning Ising clusters with the temperature T treated as the control parameter. By analyzing the three-dimensional avalanches and their two-dimensional projections (which show scale-invariant behavior for all temperatures), we uncover two universality classes with different exponents (an ordinary BTW class, and SOC_{T=∞}), along with a tricritical point (at T_{c}, the critical temperature of the host) between them. The transition between these two criticalities is induced by the transition in the support. The SOC_{T=∞} universality class is characterized by the exponent of the avalanche size distribution τ^{T=∞}=1.27±0.03, consistent with the exponent of the size distribution of the Barkhausen avalanches in amorphous ferromagnets Durin and Zapperi [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 4705 (2000)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.84.4705]. The tricritical point is characterized by its own critical exponents. In addition to the avalanche exponents, some other quantities like the average height, the spanning avalanche probability (SAP), and the average coordination number of the Ising clusters change significantly the behavior at this point, and also exhibit power-law behavior in terms of ε≡T-T_{c}/T_{c}, defining further critical exponents. Importantly, the finite-size analysis for the activity (number of topplings) per site shows the scaling behavior with exponents β=0.19±0.02 and ν=0.75±0.05. A similar behavior is also seen for the SAP and the average avalanche height. The fractal dimension of the external perimeter of the two-dimensional projections of avalanches is shown to be robust against T with the numerical value D_{f}=1.25±0.01.

Pore-Scale Hydrodynamics in a Progressively Bioclogged Three-Dimensional Porous Medium: 3-D Particle Tracking Experiments and Stochastic Transport Modeling

Biofilms are ubiquitous bacterial communities that grow in various porous media including soils, trickling, and sand filters. In these environments, they play a central role in services ranging from degradation of pollutants to water purification. Biofilms dynamically change the pore structure of the medium through selective clogging of pores, a process known as bioclogging. This affects how solutes are transported and spread through the porous matrix, but the temporal changes to transport behavior during bioclogging are not well understood. To address this uncertainty, we experimentally study the hydrodynamic changes of a transparent 3-D porous medium as it experiences progressive bioclogging. Statistical analyses of the system's hydrodynamics at four time points of bioclogging (0, 24, 36, and 48 h in the exponential growth phase) reveal exponential increases in both average and variance of the flow velocity, as well as its correlation length. Measurements for spreading, as mean-squared displacements, are found to be non-Fickian and more intensely superdiffusive with progressive bioclogging, indicating the formation of preferential flow pathways and stagnation zones. A gamma distribution describes well the Lagrangian velocity distributions and provides parameters that quantify changes to the flow, which evolves from a parallel pore arrangement under unclogged conditions, toward a more serial arrangement with increasing clogging. Exponentially evolving hydrodynamic metrics agree with an exponential bacterial growth phase and are used to parameterize a correlated continuous time random walk model with a stochastic velocity relaxation. The model accurately reproduces transport observations and can be used to resolve transport behavior at intermediate time points within the exponential growth phase considered.
