New Physics Implications of Recent Search for K_{L}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] at KOTO

New physics searches at kaon and hyperon factories

Rare meson decays are among the most sensitive probes of both heavy and light new physics. Among them, new physics searches using kaons benefit from their small total decay widths and the availability of very large datasets. On the other hand, useful complementary information is provided by hyperon decay measurements. We summarize the relevant phenomenological models and the status of the searches in a comprehensive list of kaon and hyperon decay channels. We identify new search strategies for under-explored signatures, and demonstrate that the improved sensitivities from current and next-generation experiments could lead to a qualitative leap in the exploration of light dark sectors.

Prospects for Probing Axionlike Particles at a Future Hadron Collider through Top Quark Production

Axionlike particles (ALPs) emerge from spontaneously broken global symmetries in high energy extensions of the Standard Model (SM). This causes ALPs to be among the objectives of future experiments that intend to search for new physics beyond the SM. We discuss the reach of future pp collider FCC-hh in probing the ALP model parameters through top quark pair production associated with ALP (tt¯+ALP) in a model-independent approach. The search is performed in the semi-leptonic decay mode of tt¯ and the analysis is performed using a parametric simulation of the detector response for a projected integrated luminosity of 30ab−1. It is shown that tt¯+ALP production at the FCC-hh is a promising channel with significant sensitivity to probe the ALP coupling with gluons. The ALP coupling with gluons obtained from HL-LHC and other experiments is presented for comparison.

Search for a Higgs Portal Scalar Decaying to Electron-Positron Pairs in the MicroBooNE Detector

We present a search for the decays of a neutral scalar boson produced by kaons decaying at rest, in the context of the Higgs portal model, using the MicroBooNE detector. We analyze data triggered in time with the Fermilab NuMI neutrino beam spill, with an exposure of 1.93×10^{20} protons on target. We look for monoenergetic scalars that come from the direction of the NuMI hadron absorber, at a distance of 100 m from the detector, and decay to electron-positron pairs. We observe one candidate event, with a standard model background prediction of 1.9±0.8. We set an upper limit on the scalar-Higgs mixing angle of θ<(3.3-4.6)×10^{-4} at the 95% confidence level for scalar boson masses in the range (100-200)  MeV/c^{2}. We exclude, at the 95% confidence level, the remaining model parameters required to explain the central value of a possible excess of K_{L}^{0}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] decays reported by the KOTO collaboration. We also provide a model-independent limit on a new boson X produced in K→πX decays and decaying to e^{+}e^{-}.

Study of the K_{L}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] Decay at the J-PARC KOTO Experiment

The rare decay K_{L}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] was studied with the dataset taken at the J-PARC KOTO experiment in 2016, 2017, and 2018. With a single event sensitivity of (7.20±0.05_{stat}±0.66_{syst})×10^{-10}, three candidate events were observed in the signal region. After unveiling them, contaminations from K^{±} and scattered K_{L} decays were studied, and the total number of background events was estimated to be 1.22±0.26. We conclude that the number of observed events is statistically consistent with the background expectation. For this dataset, we set an upper limit of 4.9×10^{-9} on the branching fraction of K_{L}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] at the 90% confidence level.

Large Long-Distance Contributions to the Electric Dipole Moments of Charged Leptons in the Standard Model

We reevaluate the electric dipole moment (EDM) of charged leptons in the standard model using hadron effective models. We find unexpectedly large EDM generated by the hadron level long-distance effect, d_{e}=5.8×10^{-40}, d_{μ}=1.4×10^{-38}, and d_{τ}=-7.3×10^{-38}  e cm, with an error bar of 70%, exceeding the conventionally known four-loop level elementary contribution by several orders of magnitude.

Light Scalars and the Koto Anomaly

We show that the recent excess presented by KOTO in their search for K_{L}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] may be due to weakly coupled scalars produced from Kaon decays. We study two concrete realizations, the minimal Higgs portal and a hadrophilic scalar model, and demonstrate that they can explain the observed events while satisfying existing limits. The simplicity of these models, and their possible relations to interesting UV constructions, provides strong theoretical motivation for a new physics interpretation of the KOTO data.
