Nonlinear Interferometry for Quantum-Enhanced Measurements of Multiphoton Absorption

Multiphoton absorption is of vital importance in many spectroscopic, microscopic, or lithographic applications. However, given that it is an inherently weak process, the detection of multiphoton absorption signals typically requires large field intensities, hindering its applicability in many practical situations. In this Letter, we show that placing a multiphoton absorbent inside an imbalanced nonlinear interferometer can enhance the precision of multiphoton cross section estimation with respect to strategies based on photon-number measurements using coherent or even squeezed light directly transmitted through the medium. In particular, the power scaling of the sensitivity with photon flux can be increased by 1 order compared with transmission measurements of the sample with coherent light, such that the measurement precision at any given intensity can be greatly enhanced. Furthermore, we show that this enhanced measurement precision is robust against experimental imperfections leading to photon losses, which usually tend to degrade the detection sensitivity. We trace the origin of this enhancement to an optimal degree of squeezing which has to be generated in a nonlinear SU(1,1) interferometer.

Toward incompatible quantum limits on multiparameter estimation

Achieving the ultimate precisions for multiple parameters simultaneously is an outstanding challenge in quantum physics, because the optimal measurements for incompatible parameters cannot be performed jointly due to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. In this work, a criterion proposed for multiparameter estimation provides a possible way to beat this curse. According to this criterion, it is possible to mitigate the influence of incompatibility meanwhile improve the ultimate precisions by increasing the variances of the parameter generators simultaneously. For demonstration, a scheme involving high-order Hermite-Gaussian states as probes is proposed for estimating the spatial displacement and angular tilt of light at the same time, and precisions up to 1.45 nm and 4.08 nrad are achieved in experiment simultaneously. Consequently, our findings provide a deeper insight into the role of Heisenberg uncertainty principle in multiparameter estimation, and contribute in several ways to the applications of quantum metrology.

Advantage of Coherent States in Ring Resonators over Any Quantum Probe Single-Pass Absorption Estimation Strategy

Quantum states of light have been shown to enhance precision in absorption estimation over classical strategies. By exploiting interference and resonant enhancement effects, we show that coherent-state probes in all-pass ring resonators can outperform any quantum probe single-pass strategy even when normalized by the mean input photon number. We also find that under optimal conditions coherent-state probes equal the performance of arbitrarily bright pure single-mode squeezed probes in all-pass ring resonators.

Zero-trade-off multiparameter quantum estimation via simultaneously saturating multiple Heisenberg uncertainty relations

Quantum estimation of a single parameter has been studied extensively. Practical applications, however, typically involve multiple parameters, for which the ultimate precision is much less understood. Here, by relating the precision limit directly to the Heisenberg uncertainty relation, we show that to achieve the highest precisions for multiple parameters at the same time requires the saturation of multiple Heisenberg uncertainty relations simultaneously. Guided by this insight, we experimentally demonstrate an optimally controlled multipass scheme, which saturates three Heisenberg uncertainty relations simultaneously and achieves the highest precisions for the estimation of all three parameters in SU(2) operators. With eight controls, we achieve a 13.27-dB improvement in terms of the variance (6.63 dB for the SD) over the classical scheme with the same loss. As an experiment demonstrating the simultaneous achievement of the ultimate precisions for multiple parameters, our work marks an important step in multiparameter quantum metrology with wide implications.
