Sheared Amorphous Packings Display Two Separate Particle Transport Mechanisms

Loss of memory of an elastic line on its way to limit cycles

Oscillatory-driven amorphous materials forget their initial configuration and converge to limit cycles. Here we investigate this memory loss under a nonquasistatic drive in a minimal model system, with quenched disorder and memory encoded in a spatial pattern, where oscillating protocols are formally replaced by a positive-velocity drive. We consider an elastic line driven athermally in a quenched disorder with biperiodic boundary conditions and tunable system size, thus controlling the area swept by the line per cycle as would the oscillation amplitude. The convergence to disorder-dependent limit cycle is strongly coupled to the nature of its velocity dynamics depending on system size. Based on the corresponding phase diagram, we propose a generic scenario for memory formation in disordered systems under finite driving rate.

Quantitative Understanding of the Onset of Dense Granular Flows

The question of when and how dense granular materials start to flow under stress, despite many industrial and geophysical applications, remains largely unresolved. We develop and test a simple equation for the onset of quasistatic flows of granular materials which is based on the frictional aging of the granular packing. The result is a nonmonotonic stress-strain relation which-akin to classical friction-is independent of the shear rate. This relation suffices to understand the quasistatic deformations of aging granular media, and its solid-to-liquid transition. Our results also elucidate the (flow) history dependence of the mechanical properties, and the sensitivity to the initial preparation of granular media.

Self-organization of agitated microspheres on various substrates

The vibration dynamics of relatively large granular grains is extensively treated in the literature, but comparable studies on the self-assembly of smaller agitated beads are lacking. In this work, we investigate how the particle properties and the properties of the underlying substrate surface affect the dynamics and self-organization of horizontally agitated monodisperse microspheres with diameters between 3 and 10 μm. Upon agitation, the agglomerated hydrophilic silica particles locally leave traces of particle monolayers as they move across the flat uncoated and fluorocarbon-coated silicon substrates. However, on the micromachined silicon tray with relatively large surface roughness, the agitated silica agglomerates form segregated bands reminiscent of earlier studies on granular suspensions or Faraday heaps. On the other hand, the less agglomerated hydrophobic polystyrene particles form densely occupied monolayer arrangements regardless of the underlying substrate. We explain the observations by considering the relevant adhesion and friction forces between particles and underlying substrates as well as those among the particles themselves. Interestingly, for both types of microspheres, large areas of the fluorocarbon-coated substrates are covered with densely occupied particle monolayers. By qualitatively examining the morphology of the self-organized particle monolayers using the Voronoi approach, it is understood that these monolayers are highly disordered, i.e., multiple symmetries coexist in the self-organized monolayers. However, more structured symmetries are identified in the monolayers of the agitated polystyrene microspheres on all the substrates, albeit not all precisely positioned on a hexagonal lattice. On the other hand, both the silica and polystyrene monolayers on the bare silicon substrates transition into less disordered structures as time progresses. Using Kelvin probe force microscopy measurements, we show that due to the tribocharging phenomenon, the formation of particle monolayers is promoted on the fluorocarbon surface, i.e., a local electrostatic attraction exists between the particle and the substrate.

Rotational diffusion and rotational correlations in frictional amorphous disk packings under shear

We show here that rotations of round particles in amorphous disk packing reveal various nontrivial microscopic features when the packing is close to rigidification. We analyze experimental measurements on disk packing subjected to simple shear deformation with various inter-particle friction coefficients and across a range of volume fractions where the system is known to stiffen. The analysis of measurements indicates that shear induces diffusive microrotation, that can be both enhanced and suppressed depending upon the volume fraction as well as the inter-particle friction. Rotations also display persistent anticorrelated motion. Spatial correlations in microrotation are observed to be directly correlated with system pressure. These observations point towards the broader mechanical relevance of collective dynamics in the rotational degree of freedom of particles.

Strain dependent vorticity in sheared granular media

Displacement fields in sheared particle packings often display vortex-like structures that reveal essential features about the mechanical state of the collection of particles. There are several metrics to quantify these flow field features, yet extracting such quantitative metrics from flow field or particle tracking data involves making numerous choices on the time and length scales over which to average. Here we employ a much used experimental data set on sheared disk packings to explore how such arbitrary data mining choices affect the obtained results. We focus on calculating the strain dependent vorticity, as this metric is a differential method hence potentially sensitive to the way it is computed. We find that the total surface area with an absolute vorticity above a certain threshold approaches a plateau value as shear progresses. This plateau value exhibits a non-monotonic dependence on packing fraction. We also show which range of choices yields results that can support an analysis method independent, physical interpretation of the flow field data.
