CP-Violating Neutrino Nonstandard Interactions in Long-Baseline-Accelerator Data

Probing CP Violation with Neutrino Disappearance Alone

The best way to probe CP violation in the lepton sector is with long-baseline accelerator neutrino experiments in the appearance mode: the appearance of ν_{e} in predominantly ν_{μ} beams. Here we show that it is possible to discover CP violation with disappearance experiments only, by combining JUNO for electron neutrinos and DUNE or Hyper-Kamiokande for muon neutrinos. While the maximum sensitivity to discover CP is quite modest (1.6σ with 6 years of JUNO and 13 years of DUNE), some values of δ may be disfavored by >3σ depending on the true value of δ.

Measurement of the Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering Cross Section on CsI by COHERENT

We measured the cross section of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) using a CsI[Na] scintillating crystal in a high flux of neutrinos produced at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. New data collected before detector decommissioning have more than doubled the dataset since the first observation of CEvNS, achieved with this detector. Systematic uncertainties have also been reduced with an updated quenching model, allowing for improved precision. With these analysis improvements, the COHERENT Collaboration determined the cross section to be (165_{-25}^{+30})×10^{-40}  cm^{2}, consistent with the standard model, giving the most precise measurement of CEvNS yet. The timing structure of the neutrino beam has been exploited to compare the CEvNS cross section from scattering of different neutrino flavors. This result places leading constraints on neutrino nonstandard interactions while testing lepton flavor universality and measures the weak mixing angle as sin^{2}θ_{W}=0.220_{-0.026}^{+0.028} at Q^{2}≈(50  MeV)^{2}.

Non-Unitary Neutrino Mixing in the NOνA Near Detector Data

The νμ→νe oscillation probability over a short baseline (≲1 km) would be negligible for the case when the mixing matrix for three active neutrinos is unitary. However, in the case of a non-unitary mixing of three neutrinos, this probability would be non-negligible due to the so-called “zero distance” effect. Hence, the near detector of accelerator experiments such as NOνA can provide strong constraints on the parameters of the non-unitary mixing with very large statistics. By analyzing the NOνA near-detector data, we find that the non-unitary mixing does not improve fits to the νe or νμ events over the standard unitary mixing. This leads to constraints on the non-unitary parameters: α00>0.911, |α10|<0.020, and α11>0.952 at 90% C.L. A combined analysis with the near- and far-detector data does not change these constraints significantly.

Synergies and prospects for early resolution of the neutrino mass ordering

The measurement of neutrino mass ordering (MO) is a fundamental element for the understanding of leptonic flavour sector of the Standard Model of Particle Physics. Despite existing MO indication today, a fully resolved MO measurement (\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\ge 5\sigma$$\end{document}≥5σ) is most likely to await for the next generation of neutrino experiments: JUNO, whose stand-alone sensitivity is \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\sim 3\sigma$$\end{document}∼3σ, or LB\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\nu$$\end{document}νB experiments (DUNE and Hyper-Kamiokande). Upcoming atmospheric neutrino experiments are also expected to provide precious information. In this work, we study the possible context for the earliest full MO resolution. A firm resolution is possible even before 2028, exploiting mainly vacuum oscillation, upon the combination of JUNO and the current generation of LB\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\nu$$\end{document}νB experiments (NOvA and T2K). This opportunity is possible thanks to a powerful synergy boosting the overall sensitivity where the sub-percent precision of \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\Delta m^2_{32}$$\end{document}Δm322 by LB\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\nu$$\end{document}νB experiments is found to be the leading order term for the MO earliest discovery. We also found that the comparison between matter and vacuum driven oscillation results enables unique discovery potential for physics beyond the Standard Model.

Model-Independent Test of T Violation in Neutrino Oscillations

We propose a method to establish time reversal symmetry violation at future neutrino oscillation experiments in a largely model-independent way. We introduce a general parametrization of flavor transition probabilities that holds under weak assumptions and covers a large class of new physics scenarios. This can be used to search for the presence of T-odd components in the transition probabilities by comparing data at different baselines but at the same neutrino energies. We show that this test can be performed already with experiments at three different baselines and might be feasible with experiments under preparation or consideration.

A Review of the Tension between the T2K and NOνA Appearance Data and Hints to New Physics

In this article, we review the status of the tension between the long-baseline accelerator neutrino experiments T2K and NOνA. The tension arises mostly due to the mismatch in the apappearance data of the two experiments. We explain how this tension arises based on νμ→νe and ν¯μ→ν¯e oscillation probabilities. We define the reference point of vacuum oscillation, maximal θ23 and δCP and compute the νe/ν¯e appearance events for each experiment. We then study the effects of deviating the unknown parameters from the reference point and the compatibility of any given set of values of unknown parameters with the data from T2K and NOνA. T2K observes a large excess in the νe appearance event sample compared to the expected νe events at the reference point, whereas NOνA observes a moderate excess. The large excess in T2K dictates that δCP be anchored at −90° and that θ23 > π/4 with a preference for normal hierarchy. The moderate excess at NOνA leads to two degenerate solutions: (a) NH, 0 < δCP < 180°, and θ23 > π/4; (b) IH, −180° < δCP < 0, and θ23 > π/4. This is the main cause of tension between the two experiments. We review the status of three beyond standard model (BSM) physics scenarios, (a) non-unitary mixing, (b) Lorentz invariance violation, and (c) non-standard neutrino interactions, to resolve the tension.

Nonstandard Neutrino Interactions as a Solution to the NOνA and T2K Discrepancy

The latest data of the two long-baseline accelerator experiments NOνA and T2K, interpreted in the standard three-flavor scenario, display a discrepancy. A mismatch in the determination of the standard CP phase δ_{CP} extracted by the two experiments is evident in the normal neutrino mass ordering. While NOνA prefers values close to δ_{CP}∼0.8π, T2K identifies values of δ_{CP}∼1.4π. Such two estimates are in disagreement at more than 90% C.L. for 2 degrees of freedom. We show that such a tension can be resolved if one hypothesizes the existence of complex neutral-current nonstandard interactions (NSIs) of the flavor changing type involving the e-μ or the e-τ sectors with couplings |ϵ_{eμ}|∼|ϵ_{eτ}|∼0.2. Remarkably, in the presence of such NSIs, both experiments point towards the same common value of the standard CP phase δ_{CP}∼3π/2. Our analysis also highlights an intriguing preference for maximal CP violation in the nonstandard sector with the NSI CP phases having best fit close to ϕ_{eμ}∼ϕ_{eτ}∼3π/2, hence pointing towards imaginary NSI couplings.
