Nonlinear parametric models of viscoelastic fluid flows

Reduced-order models (ROMs) have been widely adopted in fluid mechanics, particularly in the context of Newtonian fluid flows. These models offer the ability to predict complex dynamics, such as instabilities and oscillations, at a considerably reduced computational cost. In contrast, the reduced-order modelling of non-Newtonian viscoelastic fluid flows remains relatively unexplored. This work leverages the sparse identification of nonlinear dynamics (SINDy) algorithm to develop interpretable ROMs for viscoelastic flows. In particular, we explore a benchmark oscillatory viscoelastic flow on the four-roll mill geometry using the classical Oldroyd-B fluid. This flow exemplifies many canonical challenges associated with non-Newtonian flows, including transitions, asymmetries, instabilities, and bifurcations arising from the interplay of viscous and elastic forces, all of which require expensive computations in order to resolve the fast timescales and long transients characteristic of such flows. First, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our data-driven surrogate model to predict the transient evolution and accurately reconstruct the spatial flow field for fixed flow parameters. We then develop a fully parametric, nonlinear model capable of capturing the dynamic variations as a function of the Weissenberg number. While the training data are predominantly concentrated on a limit cycle regime for moderate W i , we show that the parametrized model can be used to extrapolate, accurately predicting the dominant dynamics in the case of high Weissenberg numbers. The proposed methodology represents an initial step in applying machine learning and reduced-order modelling techniques to viscoelastic flows.

Purely elastic turbulence in pressure-driven channel flows

Solutions of long, flexible polymer molecules are complex fluids that simultaneously exhibit fluid-like and solid-like behavior. When subjected to an external flow, dilute polymer solutions exhibit elastic turbulence-a unique, chaotic flow state absent in Newtonian fluids, like water. Unlike its Newtonian counterpart, elastic turbulence is caused by polymer molecules stretching and aligning in the flow, and can occur at vanishing inertia. While experimental realizations of elastic turbulence are well-documented, there is currently no understanding of its mechanism. Here, we present large-scale direct numerical simulations of elastic turbulence in pressure-driven flows through straight channels. We demonstrate that the transition to elastic turbulence is sub-critical, giving rise to spot-like flow structures that, further away from the transition, eventually spread throughout the domain. We provide evidence that elastic turbulence is organized around unstable coherent states that are localized close to the channel midplane.

Experimental insights into elasto-inertial transitions in Taylor-Couette flows

Since the seminal work of Taylor in 1923, Taylor-Couette (TC) flow has served as a paradigm to study hydrodynamic instabilities and bifurcation phenomena. Transitions of Newtonian TC flows to inertial turbulence have been extensively studied and are well understood, while in the past few years, there has been an increasing interest in TC flows of complex, viscoelastic fluids. The transitions to elastic turbulence (ET) or elasto-inertial turbulence (EIT) have revealed fascinating dynamics and flow states; depending on the rheological properties of the fluids, a broad spectrum of transitions has been reported, including rotating standing waves, flame patterns (FP), and diwhirls (DW). The nature of these transitions and the relationship between ET and EIT are not fully understood. In this review, we discuss experimental efforts on TC flows of viscoelastic fluids. We outline the experimental methods employed and the non-dimensional parameters of interest, followed by an overview of inertia, elasticity and elasto-inertia-driven transitions to turbulence and their modulation through shear thinning or particle suspensions. The published experimental data are collated, and a map of flow transitions to EIT as a function of the key fluid parameters is provided, alongside perspectives for the future work.
