Exact Lyapunov dimension of the universal attractor for the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation

Oscillatory periodic pattern dynamics in hyperbolic reaction-advection-diffusion models

In this work we consider a quite general class of two-species hyperbolic reaction-advection-diffusion system with the main aim of elucidating the role played by inertial effects in the dynamics of oscillatory periodic patterns. To this aim, first, we use linear stability analysis techniques to deduce the conditions under which wave (or oscillatory Turing) instability takes place. Then, we apply multiple-scale weakly nonlinear analysis to determine the equation which rules the spatiotemporal evolution of pattern amplitude close to criticality. This investigation leads to a cubic complex Ginzburg-Landau (CCGL) equation which, owing to the functional dependence of the coefficients here involved on the inertial times, reveals some intriguing consequences. To show in detail the richness of such a scenario, we present, as an illustrative example, the pattern dynamics occurring in the hyperbolic generalization of the extended Klausmeier model. This is a simple two-species model used to describe the migration of vegetation stripes along the hillslope of semiarid environments. By means of a thorough comparison between analytical predictions and numerical simulations, we show that inertia, apart from enlarging the region of the parameter plane where wave instability occurs, may also modulate the key features of the coherent structures, solution of the CCGL equation. In particular, it is proven that inertial effects play a role, not only during transient regime from the spatially-homogeneous steady state toward the patterned state, but also in altering the amplitude, the wavelength, the angular frequency, and even the stability of the phase-winding solutions.

Spatiotemporal chaos: the microscopic perspective

Extended nonequilibrium systems can be studied in the framework of field theory or from the dynamical systems perspective. Here we report numerical evidence that the sum of a well-defined number of instantaneous Lyapunov exponents for the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation is given by a simple function of the space average of the square of the macroscopic field. This relationship follows from an explicit formula for the time-dependent values of almost all the exponents.

Nonlinear dynamical analysis of turbulence in a stable cloud layer

An eight mode truncated spectral model based on Burgers' approximation to the one-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations is used to compute the Lyapunov dimension of the dynamical attractor for turbulence in a stable cloud layer. The model results are compared with the correlation dimension obtained earlier from a time series of radar Doppler and reflectivity signals from a turbulent layer in a marine stratus cloud. The analysis supports a weak coupling explanation for the lower correlation dimension found for the reflectivity time series compared with that for the Doppler time series. Turbulent Prandtl number emerges from the analysis as a flow parameter which can enlarge the dimension of the model's dynamical attractor, but the attractor dimension computed for the model remains lower than the radar Doppler correlation dimension. Linear stability analysis of the model's equilibrium states suggests that a nontruncated version of the model will possess an attractor which is also of lower dimension than the radar Doppler correlation dimension. Vortex dynamics in oscillatory chemical systems

Vortex core dynamics is studied in the Brusselator both near to and far from the Hopf bifurcation line for random and pair initial conditions. Extensive simulations are carried out for a pair of counter-rotating vortices close to the Hopf bifurcation line. Provided the vortices are not so far apart that wave-front annihilation produces strong gradients between their centers, the simulation results compare favorably with theories based on the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. Far from the Hopf line the vortex core dynamics changes character and phenomena such as periodic motion of the vortex centers arise.
