Observation of magnetic octupole decay in atomic spectra

On Atomic Lifetimes and Environmental Density

Atomic lifetime measurements span a wide range, from attoseconds to years. The frontier of exploratory lifetime measurements, presently, is in the long part of the above time range, with an eye on astrophysical problems. In a combination of review paper, tutorial, and Editorial, the physical environments and experiments are discussed, in which the results of such lifetime measurements matter. Although accurate lifetime measurement results are important for our understanding of atomic structure and dynamics, and for the diagnostics of various plasma environments, the order of magnitude is often precise enough to see why time resolution may be of interest in an experiment, from laser-produced plasmas of high densities to planetary nebulae of very low densities.

Infrared and visible laser spectroscopy for highly-charged Ni-like ions

Application of visible or infrared (IR) lasers for spectroscopy of highly-charged ions (HCI) has not been particularly extensive so far due to a mismatch in typical energies. We show here that the energy difference between the two lowest levels within the first excited configuration 3d 94s in Ni-like ions of heavy elements from Z N = 60 to Z N = 92 is within the range of visible or near-IR lasers. The wavelengths of these transitions are calculated within the relativistic model potential formalism and compared with other theoretical and limited experimental data. Detailed collisional-radiative simulations of non-Maxwellian and thermal plasmas are performed showing that photopumping between these levels using relatively moderate lasers is sufficient to provide a two-order of magnitude increase of the pumped level population. This accordingly results in a similar rise of the X-ray line intensity thereby allowing control of X-ray emission with visible/IR lasers.

Inclusion of electric octupole contributions explains the fast radiative decays of two metastable states in Ar+

A laser probing investigation has yielded the lifetimes of the 3s(2)3p(4)(1D)3d (2)G(7/2,9/2) metastable doublet states of Ar+. The results, obtained with the CRYRING ion storage ring of Stockholm, are 3.0+/-0.4 and 2.1+/-0.1 s, respectively. Comparisons with theoretical values calculated with two independent theoretical approaches, i.e., the pseudorelativistic Hartree-Fock method and the multiconfiguration Breit-Pauli approach, have allowed us to establish the unexpected and extraordinary strong contribution of an electric octupole (E3) transition to the ground state, in addition to the M1 decay channels to the 3d ;{2,4}F states and the E2 contributions to the 4s 2P, 2D states.

Observation of hyperfine mixing in measurements of a magnetic octupole decay in isotopically pure nickel-like 129Xe and 132Xe ions

We present measurements of high statistical significance of the rate of the magnetic octupole (M3 ) decay in nickel-like ions of isotopically pure 129Xe and 132Xe. On 132Xe, an isotope with zero nuclear spin and therefore without hyperfine structure, the lifetime of the metastable level was established as (15.06+/-0.24) ms. On 129Xe, an additional fast (2.7+/-0.1 ms) decay component was established that represents hyperfine mixing with a level that decays by electric quadrupole (E2 ) radiation.

M(F)-dependent lifetimes due to hyperfine induced interference effects

We report on the first theoretical investigation of M(F)-dependent lifetimes due to interference between a magnetic octupole transition and a hyperfine induced electric quadrupole transition. Extensive multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock calculations are used to model the hyperfine quenching of the magnetic octupole decay of 3d(9)4s 3D3 and the state mixing between the 3D3 and 3D2 due to hyperfine interaction in nickel-like Xe26+.

X-ray spectral measurements and collisional radiative modeling of Ni- to Kr-like Au ions in electron beam ion trap plasmas

The line emission of n=7-->3, 6-->3, 5-->3, and 4-->3 transitions in Ni- to Kr-like gold ions produced in the Livermore electron beam ion traps EBIT-I and EBIT-II has been recorded with an x-ray crystal spectrometer and a photometrically calibrated microcalorimeter. The plasmas had either monoenergetic electron beams with E(beam)=2.66, 3.53, or 4.54 keV or an experimentally simulated thermal electron distributions with T(e)=2.5 keV. The electron densities were approximately 10(12)cm(-3). The measured spectra have been compared to atomic structure calculations and synthetic spectra provided by the Hebrew University Lawrence Livermore Atomic Code atomic data package. Line identifications and accurate photon energy measurements have been made for many collisionally excited transitions. Approximately 140 lines have been identified in nine charge states. Agreement within 20-30 % exists between the measured and modeled line intensities for most lines excited by the monoenergetic electron beam plasmas, although some larger discrepancies can be found for some weaker features.
