Direct observation of nuclear rearrangement in molecules

Infrared spectra of carbocations and CH4+ in helium

Infrared (IR) spectra of several hydrocarbon cations are reported, namely CH₃⁺, CH₄⁺, CH₅⁺, CH₅⁺(CH₄) and C₂H₅⁺. The spectra were generated from weakly-bound helium-cation complexes formed by electron ionization of helium nanodroplets doped with a neutral hydrocarbon precursor. Spectroscopic transitions were registered by photoexcitation of the complexes coupled with mass spectrometric detection of the bare ions. For CH₃⁺, we provide evidence showing that the helium-bound complexes contain 10-20 helium atoms (on average) and have a rotational temperature of ∼5 K. We show that this technique is well-suited to the study of highly symmetric or fluxional ionic species, as these intrinsic properties are preserved in the helium environment. This is in contrast to conventional tagging methods that use a single atom or molecule, which can change the point group or rigidity of the core ion and therefore the spectral profile. We demonstrate this for the highly fluxional molecular ion CH₅⁺, whose spectrum in the current study matches that of the gas phase ion, whereas the fluxionality is lost when a methane tag is added. Finally, we present the first IR spectrum of methane cation, CH₄⁺. The spectrum of this fundamental organic ion shows CH stretching bands consistent with a non-tetrahedral structure, a consequence of Jahn-Teller distortion.

Ultrafast imaging of spontaneous symmetry breaking in a photoionized molecular system

The Jahn-Teller effect is an essential mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking in molecular and solid state systems, and has far-reaching consequences in many fields. Up to now, to directly image the onset of Jahn-Teller symmetry breaking remains unreached. Here we employ ultrafast ion-coincidence Coulomb explosion imaging with sub-10 fs resolution and unambiguously image the ultrafast dynamics of Jahn-Teller deformations of \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$${{\rm{CH}}}_{4}^{+}$$\end{document}CH4+ cation in symmetry space. It is unraveled that the Jahn-Teller deformation from C_3v to C_2v geometries takes a characteristic time of 20 ± 7 fs for this system. Classical and quantum molecular dynamics simulations agree well with the measurement, and reveal dynamics for the build-up of the C_2v structure involving complex revival process of multiple vibrational pathways of the \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$${{\rm{CH}}}_{4}^{+}$$\end{document}CH4+ cation.

The Jahn-Teller effect is the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the molecular structure caused by the coupling of electrons and nuclei. Here the authors use ultrafast Coulomb explosion imaging to map the evolution of the fundamental symmetry lowering process in photoionized methane within around 20fs.

Interconversion behavior of the C-H bond in the CH4+ radical cation: ab initio molecular dynamics study

Thermal motion of CH4+ is investigated by performing an ab initio molecular dynamics method with the second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2)/6-311G** force field. In the trajectories obtained at 400 K, we have observed rapid interconversion behavior of the geometrical parameters of CH4+ with the frequency of 0.6/ps, where the C-H pair forming the small angle around 55 degrees is switched to another pair on subpicosecond time scale. The switching patterns are found to be classified into the following two types. Type 1: one C-H of the small angled C-H pair is switched to one C-H of the other C-H pair. Type 2: the small angled C-H pair is switched to the other C-H pair, which has been newly observed in the present ab initio MD calculation. The four C-H bonds of CH4+ are characterized by the long and short C-H bonds in a time region of the trajectories, and also for the time-evolution of C-H bonds such interconversion behavior is observed. The switching patterns of the geometrical parameters are compared with those in the interconversion scheme between six equivalent C2v symmetry structures of CH4+ [Paddon-Row, M. N. et al., J Am Chem Soc 1985, 107, 7696]. We have also investigated the electronic energy fluctuation due to thermal motion of CH4+. The standard deviation of total electronic energy at 400 K is evaluated to be 1.2 kcal/mol.
