Nonunitary superconducting state in UPt3

Nonunitary superconductivity in complex quantum materials

We revisit the concept of nonunitary superconductivity and generalize it to address complex quantum materials. Starting with a brief review of the notion of nonunitary superconductivity, we discuss its spectral signatures in simple models with only the spin as an internal degree of freedom. In complex materials with multiple internal degrees of freedom, there are many more possibilities for the development of nonunitary order parameters. We provide examples focusing on d-electron systems with two orbitals, applicable to a variety of materials. We discuss the consequences for the superconducting spectra, highlighting that gap openings of band crossings at finite energies can be attributed to a nonunitary order parameter if this is associated with a finite superconducting fitness matrix. We speculate that nonunitary superconductivity in complex quantum materials is in fact very common and can be associated with multiple cases of recently reported time-reversal symmetry breaking superconductors.

Detection of a spin-triplet superconducting phase in oriented polycrystalline U(2)PtC(2) samples using ^(195)Pt nuclear magnetic resonance

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on the ^{195}Pt nucleus in an aligned powder of the moderately heavy-fermion material U_{2}PtC_{2} are consistent with spin-triplet pairing in its superconducting state. Across the superconducting transition temperature and to much lower temperatures, the NMR Knight shift is temperature independent for field both parallel and perpendicular to the tetragonal c axis, expected for triplet equal-spin pairing superconductivity. The NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_{1}, in the normal state, exhibits characteristics of ferromagnetic fluctuations, compatible with an enhanced Wilson ratio. In the superconducting state, 1/T_{1} follows a power law with temperature without a coherence peak giving additional support that U_{2}PtC_{2} is an unconventional superconductor. Bulk measurements of the ac susceptibility and resistivity indicate that the upper critical field exceeds the Pauli limiting field for spin-singlet pairing and is near the orbital limiting field, an additional indication for spin-triplet pairing.

Phenomenological theory of ferromagnetic superconductivity

It is argued that the pairing symmetry realized in a ferromagnetic superconductor UGe(2) must be a nonunitary triplet pairing. This particular state is free from the Pauli limitation and can survive under a huge internal molecular field. To check our identification we examine its basic properties and several experiments are proposed. In particular, the external field is used to raise T(c) by controlling the internal spontaneous dipole field.

Superconductivity on the border of itinerant-electron ferromagnetism in UGe2

The absence of simple examples of superconductivity adjoining itinerant-electron ferromagnetism in the phase diagram has for many years cast doubt on the validity of conventional models of magnetically mediated superconductivity. On closer examination, however, very few systems have been studied in the extreme conditions of purity, proximity to the ferromagnetic state and very low temperatures required to test the theory definitively. Here we report the observation of superconductivity on the border of ferromagnetism in a pure system, UGe2, which is known to be qualitatively similar to the classic d-electron ferromagnets. The superconductivity that we observe below 1 K, in a limited pressure range on the border of ferromagnetism, seems to arise from the same electrons that produce band magnetism. In this case, superconductivity is most naturally understood in terms of magnetic as opposed to lattice interactions, and by a spin-triplet rather than the spin-singlet pairing normally associated with nearly antiferromagnetic metals.
