Abstract
Electric and magnetic field gradients, arising from sufficiently strong anisotropic intermolecular forces, tend to induce molecular polarization which can often modify substantially the results of molecular collisions, especially at low rotational temperatures and low collision energies. The knowledge of these phenomena, today still not fully understood, is of general relevance for the control of the stereo-dynamics of elementary chemical-physical processes, involving neutral and ionic species under a variety of conditions. This paper reports on results obtained by combining information from scattering, spectroscopic and reactivity experiments, within a collaboration between the research groups in Perugia and Trento. We addressed particular attention to the reactions of small atomic ions with polar neutrals for their relevance in several environments, including interstellar medium, planetary atmospheres, and laboratory plasmas. In the case of ion-molecule reactions, alignment/orientation is a general phenomenon due to the electric field generated by the charged particle. Such phenomenon originates critical stereo-dynamic effects that can either suppress (when the orientation drives the collision complex into non-reactive or less reactive configurations), or enhance the reactivity (when orientation confines reagents in the most appropriate configuration for reaction). The associated rate coefficients show the propensity to follow an Arrhenius and a non-Arrhenius behavior, respectively.

Abstract
This paper reports for the first time molecular beam experiments for the scattering of He, Ne, and Ar by the Br2 molecule, with the aim of probing in detail the intermolecular interaction. Measurements have been performed under the experimental condition to resolve the glory pattern, a quantum interference effect observable in the collision velocity dependence of the integral cross section. We analyzed the experimental data with a reliable potential model defined as a combination of an anisotropic van der Waals component with the additional contribution due to charge transfer and polar flattening effects related to the formation of an intermolecular halogen bond. The model involves few parameters, whose values are related to fundamental physical properties of the interacting partners, and it allows an internally consistent comparison of the stability of the gas-phase adducts formed by Br2 moiety with different noble gases as well as homologous complexes with the Cl2 molecule. The same model appears to be also easily generalized to describe the interaction of diatomic halogen molecules in the excited B(3Π) electronic state where the halogen bond contribution tends to vanish and more anisotropic van der Waals components dominate the structure of the complexes with noble gases.

Abstract
A state-selected O(2)((3)Sigma(g)(-)) molecular beam, in which nearly 100% of the molecules are in the spin-rotational state of (J,M) = (2,2), has been produced by combining a supersonic seeded O(2) beam with a hexapole magnet. The (2,-2) beam has also been obtained by the state inversion of the (2,2) beam through the nonadiabatic passage in a reversing longitudinal magnetic field along the beam axis. The intensities of the other (2,M) states, which appear when applying additional transverse magnetic fields to the reversing field region, were well reproduced by the Majorana's formula for J = 2. The (2,+/-2) beam, for which we can determine the spin and rotational angular momenta of O(2) almost independently, is the most promising probe for studying the spin effects as well as the steric effects in O(2) molecular scattering.

Abstract
Sticking together: The occupation of different sites by oxygen atoms that are produced by the dissociation of O(2) on Pd(100) is determined by the initial rotational alignment of the parent molecules. The atom locations are characterized by different chemical reactivities in the reaction with CO to form CO(2) (see picture), which are followed by synchrotron radiation (SR) experiments with a supersonic molecular beam (SMB).

Abstract
The authors present a detailed study of low-temperature collisions between CaD molecules and He atoms in superimposed electric and magnetic fields with arbitrary orientations. Electric fields do not interact with the electron spin of the molecules directly but modify their rotational structure and, consequently, the spin-rotation interactions. The authors examine molecular Stark and Zeeman energy levels as functions of the angle between the fields and show that rotating fields may induce and shift avoided crossings between the Zeeman levels of the rotationally ground and rotationally excited states of the molecule. The dynamics of molecular collisions are extremely sensitive to external fields near these avoided crossings and it is shown that molecular collisions may be controlled by varying both the strength and the relative orientation of the fields. The effects observed in this study are due to interactions of the isolated molecules with external fields so the conclusions should be relevant for collisions of molecules with other atoms or collisions of molecules with each other. This study demonstrates that electric fields may be used to enhance or suppress spin-rotation interactions in molecules. The spin-rotation interactions induce nonadiabatic couplings between states of different total spins in systems of two open-shell species and it is suggested that electric fields might be used for controlling nonadiabatic spin transitions and spin-forbidden chemical reactions of cold molecules in a magnetic trap.

Abstract
This work represents the first experimental demonstration that planar molecules tend to travel as a "frisbee" when a gaseous mixture with lighter carriers expands into a vacuum, the orientation being due to collisions. The molecule is benzene, the prototype of aromatic chemistry. The demonstration is via two complementary experiments: interrogating benzene by IR-laser light and controlling its orientation by selective scattering on rare gas targets. The results cast new light on the microscopic mechanisms of collisional alignment and suggest a useful way to produce intense beams of aligned molecules, permitting studies of steric effects in gas-phase processes and in surface catalysis.

Abstract
[Figure: see text] [Figure: see text] [Figure: see text] [Figure: see text] ▪ Abstract This paper reviews the way in which, in the Italy of the years immediately after World War II, interest in the dynamics of molecular processes was awakened. The narrative begins with the work of a small number of chemists and physicists who, in the initial stage, interacted closely. In the course of the years, their interests diverged and younger people joined the newly formed groups. Even now, after half a century, a common approach can still to be seen regarding how to attack problems and perform experiments. Experimental work is discussed, bringing out the common viewpoint of fields as diverse as mass spectrometry, isotope effects, chemical kinetics, molecular beams, molecule-molecule interactions, molecule-ion interactions, molecule-surface interactions, and plasma chemistry.
