The Pauli Exclusion Principle and the Problems of Its Experimental Verification

The modern state of the Pauli exclusion principle is shortly discussed. We describe the discovery by Pauli, his principle for electrons, and how it was generalized for all elementary particles in the framework of quantum mechanics. The motivations and theoretical conceptions that induced the experiments for verification of the Pauli exclusion principle are analyzed. The results and methodology of two different types of experiments are discussed: (1) the search of unusual atoms and nuclei in the stable non-Pauli states, and (2) the experiments in which the emitted radiation of non-Pauli transitions is measured. In conclusion, the comments on the discussed experiments that follow from the general quantum mechanical conceptions and group theory are formulated.

Search for exchange-antisymmetric states for spin-0 particles at the 10(-11) level

We set a new upper limit of 1.7x10(-11) to the probability that two spin-0 16O nuclei are in forbidden exchange-antisymmetric states, testing the validity of fundamental principles of quantum mechanics. A newly designed difference-frequency spectrometer is used to look for the existence of these states. The experimental test was performed by tuning the spectrometer across a molecular transition of 12C 16O (2) belonging to the rovibrational band at 4.25 microm, connecting the forbidden states (00(0)0,J = 25) and (00(0)1,J = 26).

New experimental test of the pauli exclusion principle using accelerator mass spectrometry

We report the results of a new experimental search for the Pauli-forbidden 1s(4) state of Be, denoted by Be ('). Using the Accelerator Mass Spectrometer facility at Purdue University, we set limits on the abundance of Be (') in metallic Be, Be ore, natural gas, and air. Our results improve on those obtained in a previous search for Be (') by a factor of approximately 300.
