Spin gap in HgBa2Ca2Cu3O8+ delta single crystals from 63Cu NMR

Magnetotransport signatures of antiferromagnetism coexisting with charge order in the trilayer cuprate HgBa2Ca2Cu3O8+δ

Multilayered cuprates possess not only the highest superconducting temperature transition but also offer a unique platform to study disorder-free CuO₂ planes and the interplay between competing orders with superconductivity. Here, we study the underdoped trilayer cuprate HgBa₂Ca₂Cu₃O_8+δ and we report quantum oscillation and Hall effect measurements in magnetic field up to 88 T. A careful analysis of the complex spectra of quantum oscillations strongly supports the coexistence of an antiferromagnetic order in the inner plane and a charge order in the outer planes. The presence of an ordered antiferromagnetic metallic state that extends deep in the superconducting phase is a key ingredient that supports magnetically mediated pairing interaction in cuprates.

The interplay between superconductivity and competing orders in multi-layered cuprates can shed light on the nature of the superconducting pairing. Here, the authors report on the coexistence of antiferromagnetic and charge orders in different CuO2 planes in a tri-layer cuprate, pointing to a magnetically-mediated mechanism.

Planar Cu and O NMR and the Pseudogap of Cuprate Superconductors

Recently, an analysis of all available planar oxygen shift and relaxation data for the cuprate high-temperature superconductors showed that the data can be understood with a simple spin susceptibility from a metallic density of states common to all cuprates. It carries a doping dependent but temperature independent pseudogap at the Fermi surface, which causes the deviations from normal metallic behavior, also in the specific heat. Here, a more coherent, unbiased assessment of all data, including planar Cu, is presented and consequences are discussed, since the planar Cu data were collected and analyzed prior to the O data. The main finding is that the planar Cu shifts for one direction of the external magnetic field largely follow from the same states and pseudogap. This explains the shift suppression stated more recently, which leads to the failure of the Korringa relation in contrast to an enhancement of the relaxation due to antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations originally proposed. However, there is still the need for a second spin component that appears to be associated with the Cu 3d(x2−y2) hole to explain the complex Cu shift anisotropy and family dependence. Furthermore, it is argued that the planar Cu relaxation which was reported recently to be rather ubiquitous for the cuprates, must be related to this universal density of states and the second spin component, while not being affected by the simple pseudogap. Thus, while this universal metallic density of states with a pseudogap is also found in the planar Cu data, there is still need for a more elaborate scenario that eludes planar O.

Evidence for Weakly Correlated Oxygen Holes in the Highest-T_{c} Cuprate Superconductor HgBa_{2}Ca_{2}Cu_{3}O_{8+δ}

We study the electronic structure of HgBa_{2}Ca_{2}Cu_{3}O_{8+δ} (Hg1223; T_{c}=134  K) using photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Resonant valence band PES across the O K edge and Cu L edge identifies correlation satellites originating in O 2p and Cu 3d two-hole final states, respectively. Analyses using the experimental O 2p and Cu 3d partial density of states show quantitatively different on-site Coulomb energy for the Cu site (U_{dd}=6.5±0.5  eV) and O site (U_{pp}=1.0±0.5  eV). Cu_{2}O_{7}-cluster calculations with nonlocal screening explain the Cu 2p core level PES and Cu L-edge XAS spectra, confirm the U_{dd} and U_{pp} values, and provide evidence for the Zhang-Rice singlet state in Hg1223. In contrast to other hole-doped cuprates and 3d-transition metal oxides, the present results indicate weakly correlated oxygen holes in Hg1223.

Contrasting Phenomenology of NMR Shifts in Cuprate Superconductors

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) shifts, if stripped of their uncertainties, must hold key information about the electronic fluid in the cuprates. The early shift interpretation that favored a single-fluid scenario will be reviewed, as well as recent experiments that reported its failure. Thereafter, based on literature shift data for planar Cu, a contrasting shift phenomenology for cuprate superconductors is developed, which is very different from the early view while being in agreement with all published data. For example, it will be shown that the hyperfine scenario used up to now is inadequate as a large isotropic shift component is discovered. Furthermore, the changes of the temperature dependences of the shifts above and below the superconducting transitions temperature proceed according to a few rules that were not discussed before. It appears that there can be substantial spin shift at the lowest temperature if the magnetic field is perpendicular to the CuO 2 plane, which points to a localization of spin in the 3 d ( x 2 − y 2 ) orbital. A simple model is presented based on the most fundamental findings. The analysis must have new consequences for theory of the cuprates.

Unconventional High-Energy-State Contribution to the Cooper Pairing in the Underdoped Copper-Oxide Superconductor HgBa_{2}Ca_{2}Cu_{3}O_{8+δ}

We study the temperature-dependent electronic B_{1g} Raman response of a slightly underdoped single crystal HgBa_{2}Ca_{2}Cu_{3}O_{8+δ} with a superconducting critical temperature T_{c}=122  K. Our main finding is that the superconducting pair-breaking peak is associated with a dip on its higher-energy side, disappearing together at T_{c}. This result reveals a key aspect of the unconventional pairing mechanism: spectral weight lost in the dip is transferred to the pair-breaking peak at lower energies. This conclusion is supported by cellular dynamical mean-field theory on the Hubbard model, which is able to reproduce all the main features of the B_{1g} Raman response and explain the peak-dip behavior in terms of a nontrivial relationship between the superconducting gap and the pseudogap.

Origin of the enhanced copper spin echo decay rate in the pseudogap regime of the multilayer high-T(c) cuprates

We report measurements of the anisotropy of the spin echo decay for the inner layer Cu site of the triple layer cuprate Hg(0.8)Re(0.2)Ba(2)Ca(2)Cu(3)O(8) (T(c)=126 K). The angular dependence of the second moment (T(-2)(2M) identical with <Deltaomega(2)>) deduced from the decay curves indicates that T(-2)(2M) for H0 parallel c is enhanced in the pseudogap regime below T(pg) approximately 170 K, as seen in bilayer systems. Comparison of T(-2)(2M) between H0 parallel c and H0 perpendicular c indicates that this enhancement is caused by electron spin correlations between the inner and the outer CuO2 layers. The results provide the answer to the long-standing controversy regarding the opposite T dependences of (T1T)(-1) and T(-2)(2G) (T(2G): Gaussian component) in the pseudogap regime of multilayer systems.

Low energy excitation and scaling in Bi(2)Sr(2)Ca(n-1)Cu(n)O(2n+4) (n=1-3): angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has been performed on the single- to triple-layered Bi-family high-T (c) superconductors (Bi(2)Sr(2)Ca(n-1)Cu(n)O(2n+4), n=1-3). We found a sharp coherent peak as well as a pseudogap at the Fermi level in the triple-layered compound. Comparison among three compounds has revealed a universal rule that the characteristic energies of superconducting and pseudogap behaviors are scaled with the maximum T (c).

Systematic (63)Cu NQR and (89)Y NMR study of spin dynamics in Y(1-z)Ca(z)Ba(2)Cu(3)O(y) across the superconductor-insulator boundary

We demonstrate that the spin dynamics in underdoped Y(1-z)Ca(z)Ba(2)Cu(3)O(y) for y approximately equal to 6.0 exhibit qualitatively the same behavior to underdoped La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) for an equal amount of hole concentration p = z/2 = x< or =0.11. However, a spin gap appears as more holes are doped into the CuO(2) plane by increasing the oxygen concentration to y approximately equal to 6.5 for a fixed value of Ca concentration z. Our results also suggest that Ca doping causes disorder effects that enhance the low frequency spin fluctuations.
