Soliton lattice in pure and diluted CuGeO3

Charge and Bonding in CuGeO3 Nanorods

We combine infrared and Raman spectroscopies to investigate finite length scale effects in CuGeO₃ nanorods. The infrared-active phonons display remarkably strong size dependence whereas the Raman-active features are, by comparison, nearly rigid. A splitting analysis of the Davydov pairs reveals complex changes in chemical bonding with rod length and temperature. Near the spin-Peierls transition, stronger intralayer bonding in the smallest rods indicates a more rigid lattice which helps to suppress the spin-Peierls transition. Taken together, these findings advance the understanding of size effects and collective phase transitions in low-dimensional oxides.

Correlated states in β-Li2IrO3 driven by applied magnetic fields

Magnetic honeycomb iridates are thought to show strongly spin-anisotropic exchange interactions which, when highly frustrated, lead to an exotic state of matter known as the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. However, in all known examples these materials magnetically order at finite temperatures, the scale of which may imply weak frustration. Here we show that the application of a relatively small magnetic field drives the three-dimensional magnet β-Li₂IrO₃ from its incommensurate ground state into a quantum correlated paramagnet. Interestingly, this paramagnetic state admixes a zig-zag spin mode analogous to the zig-zag order seen in other Mott-Kitaev compounds. The rapid onset of the field-induced correlated state implies the exchange interactions are delicately balanced, leading to strong frustration and a near degeneracy of different ground states.

Materials with a Kitaev spin liquid ground state are sought after as models of quantum phases but candidates so far form either zig-zag or incommensurate magnetic order. Ruiz et al. find a crossover between these states in β-Li₂IrO₃ under weak magnetic fields, indicating strongly frustrated spin interactions.

Structural aspects of spin-chain and spin-ladder oxides

An overview is presented of the various oxidic compounds, that exhibit low-dimensional magnetic properties. These include spin-ladder and spin-chain compounds as well as compounds with a low-dimensional electronic band responsible for the magnetic order. The basic structures at room temperature are presented, and their dimensionality is discussed. The structural variations with temperature and magnetic field are analysed. Particular attention is given to the superstructures as they occur upon phase transitions involving the development of magnetic order and charge order. The consequences of these superstructures for the interpretation of the physical properties are reviewed.

Magnetization plateaus induced by a coupling to the lattice

We present a novel mechanism for the appearance of magnetization plateaus in quasi-one-dimensional quantum spin systems, which is induced by the coupling to the underlying lattice. We investigate in detail a simple model of a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain coupled to adiabatic phonons under an external magnetic field, but the present mechanism is expected to be more general. Using field theoretic methods complemented by extensive density matrix renormalization group techniques, we show that magnetization plateaus at nontrivial rational values of the magnetization can be stabilized by the lattice coupling. We suggest that such a scenario could be relevant for some low dimensional frustrated spin-Peierls compounds.

Commensurate-incommensurate magnetic phase transition in magnetoelectric single crystal LiNiPO(4)

Neutron scattering studies of single crystal LiNiPO4 reveal a spontaneous first-order commensurate-incommensurate magnetic phase transition. Short- and long-range incommensurate phases are intermediate between the high temperature paramagnetic and the low temperature antiferromagnetic phases. The modulated structure has a predominant antiferromagnetic component, giving rise to satellite peaks in the vicinity of the fundamental antiferromagnetic Bragg reflection, and a ferromagnetic component, giving rise to peaks at small momentum transfers around the origin at (0,+/-Q,0). The wavelength of the modulated magnetic structure varies continuously with temperature. It is argued that the incommensurate short- and long-range phases are due to spin-dimensionality crossover from a continuous to the discrete Ising state.

Formation of a magnetic soliton lattice in copper metaborate

The magnetic ground state of CuB2O4 is incommensurate at T = 1.8 K and undergoes a continuous phase transition to a noncollinear commensurate antiferromagnetic state at T(small star), filled approximately 10 K. Close to T(small star), filled higher-order magnetic satellites are observed. Coexistence of long- and short-range magnetic order is observed in both magnetic phases. This suggests that the association of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and anisotropy leads to the formation of a magnetic soliton lattice.
