Experimental Operation of a Cyclotron Autoresonance Maser Oscillator at the Second Harmonic

Beam dynamic study of a Ka-band microwave undulator and its potential drive sources

Microwave undulators (MUs) have great potential to be an alternative solution to permanent magnet undulators in a free electron laser (FEL) when shorter undulator periods are required. In this paper, the factors that affect the choice of the high-power drive sources were studied via a Ka-band cavity-type MU with a corrugated waveguide proposed for the CompactLight X-ray FEL. They include the technology of the high-power vacuum electronic devices, the quality factor of the MU cavity that was demonstrated by prototyping a short section of the MU structure, and the beam dynamic study of the electrons’ trajectories inside the MU. It showed that at high beam energy, a high-power oscillator is feasible to be used as the drive source. At low beam energy, the maximum transverse drift distance becomes larger therefore an amplifier has to be used to minimize the drift distance of the electrons by controlling the injection phase.

A novel cylindrical TE(2,1) mode converter

A novel, compact arrangement for Ka-band mode couplers, which convert a rectangular waveguide TE(1,0) to cylindrical waveguide TE(2,1) mode, has been designed, constructed, and tested. The design features a set of longitudinal slots, positioned in regions of negligible current flow for the TE(2,1) mode, allowing its propagation to be preferentially favored, by suppression of the fundamental TE(1,1) mode. Numerical simulations and experimental measurements display good agreement, showing transmission of the intended TE(2,1) mode at levels of better than -5 dB, from a frequency of ∼37.5 to 41 GHz. Subsequent farfield measurements confirm the presence of the TE(2,1) mode, demonstrating good agreement when compared with analytical expectations. Such a device would be an ideal candidate for an application where mode purity, bandwidth, and ease of construction are of primary importance and where the transmission efficiency is of limited concern.

Effective coupling of cyclotron autoresonance maser and "gyrotron" modes on a phase-synchronized electron beam

For a cyclotron resonance maser (CRM) with a helical axis-encircling electron beam, the possibility of a strong interaction between cutoff (gyrotron) and traveling Doppler-up-shifted (cyclotron autoresonance maser) modes, which are in resonance with the electrons at the same frequency, is demonstrated. This effect can be used in a CRM oscillator of a new type, where the feedback and the mode selectivity for the operating traveling mode are provided due to the excitation of the cutoff mode. According to both the theory and the experiment, such a scheme can provide an effective excitation of the traveling mode with negligibly low losses associated with the cutoff mode.

High-gain wide-band gyrotron traveling wave amplifier with a helically corrugated waveguide

First bandwidth measurements of a novel gyrotron amplifier are presented. The coupling between the second harmonic cyclotron mode of a gyrating electron beam and the radiation field occurred in the region of near infinite phase velocity over a broad bandwidth by using a cylindrical waveguide with a helical corrugation on its internal surface. With a beam energy of 185 keV, the amplifier achieved a maximum output power of 1.1 MW, saturated gain of 37 dB, linear gain of 47 dB, saturated bandwidth of 8.4 to 10.4 GHz ( 21% relative bandwidth), and an efficiency of 29%, in good agreement with theory.
