Critical points in heavy ion irradiated untwinned YBa(2)Cu3O(7-delta) crystals

Imprinting nanoporous alumina patterns into the magneto-transport of oxide superconductors

We used oxygen ion irradiation to transfer the nanoscale pattern of a porous alumina mask into high-T(C) superconducting thin films. This causes a nanoscale spatial modulation of superconductivity and strongly affects the magneto-transport below T(C), which shows a series of periodic oscillations reminiscent of the Little-Parks effect in superconducting wire networks. This irradiation technique could be extended to other oxide materials in order to induce ordered nanoscale phase segregation.

Multiple changes of order of the vortex melting transition in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 with dilute columnar defects

A low concentration of columnar defects is reported to transform a first-order vortex lattice melting line in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 crystals into alternating segments of first- and second-order transitions separated by two critical points. As the density of columnar defects is increased, the critical points shift apart and the range of the intermediate second-order transition expands. The measurement of equilibrium magnetization and the mapping of the melting line down to 27 K was made possible by employment of the shaking technique.

Equilibrium first-order melting and second-order glass transitions of the vortex matter in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8

The thermodynamic phase diagram of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 was mapped by measuring local equilibrium magnetization M(H,T) in the presence of vortex shaking. Two equally sharp first-order magnetization steps are revealed in a single temperature sweep, manifesting a liquid-solid-liquid sequence. In addition, a second-order glass transition line is revealed by a sharp break in the equilibrium M(T) slope. The first- and second-order lines intersect at intermediate temperatures, suggesting the existence of four phases: Bragg glass and vortex crystal at low fields, glass and liquid at higher fields.

Melting of "porous" vortex matter

Bitter decoration and magneto-optical studies reveal that in heavy-ion irradiated superconductors, a "porous" vortex matter is formed when vortices outnumber columnar defects. In this state ordered vortex crystallites are embedded in the "pores" of a rigid matrix of vortices pinned on columnar defects. The crystallites melt through a first-order transition while the matrix remains solid. The melting temperature increases with density of columnar defects and eventually turns into a continuous transition. At high temperatures a sharp kink in the melting line is found, signaling an abrupt change from crystallite melting to melting of the rigid matrix.

Temperature variations of the disorder-induced vortex-lattice-melting landscape

Differential magneto-optical imaging of the vortex-lattice-melting process in Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8) crystals reveals unexpected effects of quenched disorder on the broadening of the first-order phase transition. The melting patterns show that the disorder-induced melting landscape T(m)(H,r) is not fixed, but rather changes dramatically with varying field and temperature along the melting line. The changes in both the scale and shape of the landscape are found to result from the competing contributions of different types of quenched disorder which have opposite effects on the local melting transition.

History effects and phase diagram near the lower critical point in YBa2Cu3O7 single crystals

Using a sensitive torque magnetometer we have studied magnetization curves for untwinned overdoped YBa2Cu3O7 single crystals in fields of up to 28 T. We demonstrate the existence of history effects below the lower critical point and provide a full demarcation of the Bragg-glass phase. A pronounced symmetry is observed in the behavior of the phase lines, irreversible magnetization, and value of the magnetization jump near both critical points.

Simulation of flux lines with columnar pins: bose glass and entangled liquids

Using path integral Monte Carlo we simulate a 3D system of up to 1000 magnetic flux lines by mapping it onto interacting bosons in (2+1)D. With increasing temperatures we find first order melting from an ordered solid to an entangled liquid signaled by a finite entropy jump and sharp discontinuities of the defect density and the structure factor S(G). For a particular density of strong columnar pins the crystal is transformed into a Bose glass phase with patches of crystalline order disrupted by the trapped vortices at the pinning sites but with no overall positional or orientational order. This glassy phase melts into a defected entangled liquid through a continuous transition.
