Coster-kronig decay of the ar2s hole observed by auger-threshold photoelectron coincidence spectroscopy

Magnetic bottle electron spectrometer driven by electron pulses

We report an electron scattering experiment on argon gas where a keV electron beam is used as a probe and electrons are collected with a magnetic bottle spectrometer. For this purpose, we have built a thermionic gun that produces electron pulses with nanosecond duration by sweeping the beam across a small aperture. To reach the target, electrons must pass through the hole in an axially symmetric arrangement of strong permanent magnets required to operate the magnetic bottle. From the recorded multi-hit sequence of electron arrival times on the microchannel plate detector, a kinetic energy spectrum is built that allows an analysis of the elastic and inelastic electron scattering channels by means of the coincidence technique. After a description of the instrumental configuration and discussion of suitable working parameters, the results of an angle-integrated (e, 2e) experiment are presented for 800 eV electron scattering on argon atoms.

Multi-electron spectroscopy: Auger decays of the argon 2s hole

Auger decay of an inner shell hole is an efficient way to create multiply charged ions in the gas phase. We illustrate this with the example of the argon 2s decay, and show that multi-electron coincidence spectroscopy between the 2s photoelectron and all released Auger electrons leads to a complete reconstruction of the Ar 2s decay cascade. Spectra of the intermediate and final Ar(n+) states are obtained and are compared with a theoretical model.

A rotatable electron spectrometer for multicoincidence experiments

We have developed a rotatable hemispherical spectrometer with good energy and angular resolution, which can be positioned with the lens axis arbitrarily within a solid angle of 1 pi. The collection angle of the emitted electrons with respect to the polarization axis of the light is set by means of a three-axes goniometer, operating under vacuum. An important requirement for this setup was the possibility to perform coincidences between the electron analyzed by the spectrometer and one or several other particles, such as ions, electrons, or photons. The lens system and the hemispheres have been designed to accommodate such experimental demands, regarding parameters such as the resolving power, the acceptance angle, or the width of the kinetic energy window which can be recorded for a given pass energy. We have chosen to detect the impact position of the electron at the focal plane of the hemispherical analyzer with a delay line detector and a time-to-digital converter as acquisition card rather than using a conventional charge-coupled device camera.

Anharmonicity and tunneling effects in revisited vibrational O(1s) photoelectron spectrum of water gas phase

The authors have revisited the description of the core-hole ionization dynamics of the oxygen atom in water by re-exploiting the high-resolution, vibrationally resolved, XPS photoelectron spectrum of gas phase at the O(1s) edge. The agreement between theory and experiments is mainly controlled by (i) the description of the tunneling behavior near the barrier top (linear H-O-H conformation) of wave functions with high vibrational quanta, and (ii) the relative displacement of the potential-energy minimum of the O(1s) final state with respect to the ground state one. Accurate change in bond angle between the neutral and core-ionized states is essential to account for the Franck-Condon factors. The O(1s) photoelectron spectrum of water is well reproduced by the molecular ab initio calculations based on density functional theory and Franck-Condon factors calculations in a double-well (2 x W) simulation of the bending motion.

Influence of formation path on the CH2BrCl2+ dissociation dynamics

To get further insight into the CH2BrCl site-selective fragmentation previously observed upon inner-shell ionization, we have performed high-resolution Br 3d and Cl 2p Auger and spin-orbit resolved Br 3d Auger spectra, and studied the dissociation properties of the CH2BrCl2+ dication formed at threshold by means of threshold electron pair-ion coincidence measurements. The key point is that the origin of site-specific bond breaking is found in the Auger decay itself, as it preferentially populates selected dication states. Whereas the predominance of the C-Br bond breaking is observed in both threshold and inner-shell studies, no signature of selective C-Cl rupture is reported for the dication formed at threshold.

Multielectron spectroscopy: the xenon 4d hole double auger decay

A magnetic bottle spectrometer of the type recently developed by Eland et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 053003 (2003).] has been implemented for use with synchrotron radiation, allowing multidimensional electron spectroscopy. Its application to the Xe 4d double Auger decay reveals all the energy pathways involved. The dominant path is a cascade process with a rapid (6 fs) ejection of a first Auger electron followed by the slower (>23 fs) emission of a second Auger electron. Weaker processes implying 3 electron processes are also revealed, namely, direct double Auger and associated Rydberg series.

Dynamics and post-collision interaction effects in two electron decay from the Xenon 4d hole

Two Auger electrons, one very slow, one fast, have been detected in coincidence following near threshold 4d photoionization of the Xe atom. The distribution in the energy the two electrons share has been measured for the first time revealing the presence of post-collision interaction effects that provide unique information on the decay dynamics of the 4d hole. Analysis of the distorted line shapes indicates that the dominant process is decay of Xe+(4d(-1)) to Xe3+ through cascade emission of a zero kinetic energy Auger electron followed by a fast Auger electron. The widths of the intermediate Xe2+* states are estimated to be about 60 meV.
