Selection rules and isotope effects in the full fragmentation of the hydrogen molecule

Electron-pair excitations and the molecular Coulomb continuum

Electron-pair excitations in the molecular hydrogen continuum are described by quantizing rotations of the momentum plane of the electron pair about the pair's relative momentum. A heliumlike description of the molecular photodouble ionization is thus extended to higher angular momenta of the electron pair. A simple three-state superposition is found to account surprisingly well for recent observations of noncoplanar electron-pair, molecular-axis angular distributions.

Classical two-slit interference effects in double photoionization of molecular hydrogen at high energies

Recent experiments on double photoionization of H2 with photon energies between 160 and 240 eV have revealed body-frame angular distributions that suggest classical two-slit interference effects may be present when one electron carries most of the available energy and the second electron is not observed. We report precise quantum mechanical calculations that reproduce the experimental findings. They reveal that the interpretation in terms of classical diffraction is only appropriate at substantially higher photon energies. At the energies considered in the experiment we offer an alternative explanation based on the mixing of two nondiffractive contributions by circularly polarized light.

Physical interpretation of the "kinetic energy release" effect in the double photoionization of H(2)

A physical interpretation is given for the variation with internuclear separation of the fully differential cross section for double photoionization of H2. This effect is analyzed in a geometry where the fourbody interaction is completely probed. Excellent agreement is found between experiment and time-dependent close-coupling theory after convoluting the latter over the relevant solid angles. We show the observed variations are purely due to the epsilon(Sigma) component of the polarization vector epsilon along the molecular axis, a conclusion which is supported through calculations of the photoionization of H2(+).

Photodouble ionization dynamics for fixed-in-space H2

The Coulomb explosion of the hydrogen molecule, after absorption of a 76 eV photon, has been studied by momentum imaging the two electrons and the two protons. Absolute fully differential cross sections of high statistical quality are obtained. A subset of the overall data, namely, equal electron-energy sharing, is used to investigate the effects of molecular orientation on the photoelectron angular distribution. Departures from the first-order helium-like model are evident in detection geometries where electron-electron correlation is "frozen."

Complete Photo-Induced Breakup of the H 2 Molecule as a Probe of Molecular Electron Correlation

Despite decades of progress in quantum mechanics, electron correlation effects are still only partially understood. Experiments in which both electrons are ejected from an oriented hydrogen molecule by absorption of a single photon have recently demonstrated a puzzling phenomenon: The ejection pattern of the electrons depends sensitively on the bond distance between the two nuclei as they vibrate in their ground state. Here, we report a complete numerical solution of the Schrödinger equation for the double photoionization of H2. The results suggest that the distribution of photoelectrons emitted from aligned molecules reflects electron correlation effects that are purely molecular in origin.

Complete photo-fragmentation of the deuterium molecule

All properties of molecules--from binding and excitation energies to their geometry--are determined by the highly correlated initial-state wavefunction of the electrons and nuclei. Details of these correlations can be revealed by studying the break-up of these systems into their constituents. The fragmentation might be initiated by the absorption of a single photon, by collision with a charged particle or by exposure to a strong laser pulse: if the interaction causing the excitation is sufficiently understood, the fragmentation process can then be used as a tool to investigate the bound initial state. The interaction and resulting fragment motions therefore pose formidable challenges to quantum theory. Here we report the coincident measurement of the momenta of both nuclei and both electrons from the single-photon-induced fragmentation of the deuterium molecule. The results reveal that the correlated motion of the electrons is strongly dependent on the inter-nuclear separation in the molecular ground state at the instant of photon absorption.

Fully differential cross sections for photo-double-ionization of D2

We report the first kinematically complete study of the four-body fragmentation of the D2 molecule following absorption of a single photon. For equal energy sharing of the two electrons and a photon energy of 75.5 eV, we observed the relaxation of one of the selection rules valid for He photo-double-ionization and a strong dependence of the electron angular distribution on the orientation of the molecular axis. This effect is reproduced by a model in which a pair of photoionization amplitudes is introduced for the light polarization parallel and perpendicular to the molecular axis.

Shape-amplitude representation of N-particle photofragmentation processes

The general form of the multiparticle photofragmentation matrix element in dipole approximation is derived. Using two noncolinear momentum vectors to create a coordinate system enables the extraction of shape amplitudes depending only on lengths and mutual angles of the momentum vectors, i.e., on body fixed quantities, defining the fragmentation configuration. This is in contrast to previous parametrizations and, in particular, allows selection rules to be derived in a simpler and more transparent way.
