Sustained saturation in a free-electron laser oscillator at perfect synchronism of an optical cavity

Few-Cycle Infrared Pulse Evolving in FEL Oscillators and Its Application to High-Harmonic Generation for Attosecond Ultraviolet and X-ray Pulses

Generation of few-cycle optical pulses in free-electron laser (FEL) oscillators has been experimentally demonstrated in FEL facilities based on normal-conducting and superconducting linear accelerators. Analytical and numerical studies have revealed that the few-cycle FEL lasing can be explained in the frame of superradiance, cooperative emission from self-bunched systems. In the present paper, we review historical remarks of superradiance FEL experiments in short-pulse FEL oscillators with emphasis on the few-cycle pulse generation and discuss the application of the few-cycle FEL pulses to the scheme of FEL-HHG, utilization of infrared FEL pulses to drive high-harmonic generation (HHG) from gas and solid targets. The FEL-HHG enables one to explore ultrafast science with attosecond ultraviolet and X-ray pulses with a MHz repetition rate, which is difficult with HHG driven by solid-state lasers. A research program has been launched to develop technologies for the FEL-HHG and to conduct a proof-of-concept experiment of FEL-HHG.

Generating Carrier-Envelope-Phase Stabilized Few-Cycle Pulses from a Free-Electron Laser Oscillator

We propose a scheme to generate carrier-envelope-phase (CEP) stabilized few-cycle optical pulses from a free-electron laser oscillator. The CEP stabilization is realized by the continuous injection of CEP-stabilized seed pulses from an external laser to the free-electron laser oscillator whose cavity length is perfectly synchronized to the electron bunch repetition. Operated at a midinfrared wavelength, the proposed method is able to drive a photon source based on high harmonic generation (HHG) to explore the generation of isolated attosecond pulses at photon energies above 1 keV with a repetition of >10  MHz. The HHG photon source will open a door to full-scale experiments of attosecond x-ray pulses and push ultrafast laser science to the zeptosecond regime.

Analytical description of free-electron-laser oscillations in a perfectly synchronized optical cavity

We present an analytical description of free-electron-laser (FEL) oscillations in a perfectly synchronized optical cavity by solving the one-dimensional FEL equations. It is shown that the radiation stored in the cavity eventually evolves into an intense few-cycle optical pulse in the high-gain and low-loss regime despite the lethargy effect. The evolution of the leading slope of the optical pulse, which is defined from the front edge toward the primary peak, is found to play an important role in generating the intense few-cycle optical pulse. The phase space evolution of electrons which interact with the leading slope is solved analytically in a perturbation method, leading to an analytical solution for the optical pulse evolution. The peak amplitude and the pulse length at saturation are found to scale with the electron beam density and optical cavity loss. Those scalings agree well with the intense few-cycle pulses recently observed in a high-power FEL.

Generation of a self-chirped few-cycle optical pulse in a FEL oscillator

We study the generation of a self-chirped optical pulse in a free-electron laser (FEL) oscillator. In a high-gain FEL oscillator, the frequency chirp is induced in the slippage region as a result of superradiant FEL resonance, and this time-frequency correlation evolves continuously into a few-cycle regime, if the optical cavity length is perfectly synchronized to the electron bunch interval. Numerical simulations based on the slowly evolving wave approximation and experimental results are presented.
