Abstract
Because of the amphiphilic nature of ethanol in the aqueous solution, ions cause an interesting microheterogeneity where the water molecules and the hydroxy groups of ethanol preferentially solvate the ions, while the ethyl groups tend to occupy the intervening space. Using computer simulations, we study the dynamics of rigid monovalent cations (Li+, Na+, K+, and Cs+) in aqueous ethanol solutions with chloride as the counterion. We vary both the size of the ions and the composition of the mixture to explore size- and composition-dependent ion diffusion. The relative stability of enhanced microheterogeneous configurations makes ion diffusion slower than what would be surmised by using the bulk properties of the mixture, using the Stokes-Einstein relation. We study the structure through partial radial distribution functions and the stability through coordination number fluctuations. The ion diffusion coefficient exhibits sharp re-entrant behavior when plotted against viscosity varied by composition. Our studies reveal multiple anomalous features of ion motion in this mixture. We formulate a mode-coupling theory (MCT) that takes into account the interaction between different dynamical components; MCT can incorporate the effects of heterogeneous dynamics and nonlinearity in composition dependence that arise from the feedback between mutually dependent ion-solvent dynamics.

Abstract
Amphiphilic molecules such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and its aqueous binary mixtures exhibit pronounced nonideality in composition dependence of several static and dynamic properties. We carry out detailed molecular dynamics simulations to calculate various properties including viscosity of the mixture and combine the results with a mode coupling theory analysis to show that this nonideality can be attributed to local structures that are stable on a short time scale but transient on a long time scale to maintain the large scale homogeneity of the solution. Although the existence of such quasistable structures has been deciphered from spectroscopy, a detailed characterization does not exist. We calculate stress-stress autocorrelation functions (SACFs) of water-DMSO binary mixtures. We employ two different models of water, SPC/E and TIP4P/2005, to check the consistency of our results. Viscosity shows a pronounced nonmonotonic composition dependence. The calculated values are in good agreement with the experimental results. Fourier transform of SACF provides frequency-dependent viscosity. The frequency-dependent viscosity (that is, viscoelasticity) is also found to be strongly dependent on composition. Viscoelasticity exhibits sharp peaks due to intramolecular vibrational modes of DMSO, which are also seen in the density of states. We evaluate the wavenumber dependent dynamic structure factor and wavenumber dependent relaxation time. The latter also exhibits a sharp nonmonotonic composition dependence. The calculated dynamic structure factor is used in mode coupling theory expression of viscosity to obtain a semiquantitative understanding of anomalous composition dependence of viscosity. Both the self-diffusion coefficients and rotational correlation times of water and DMSO molecules exhibit nonmonotonic composition dependence.

Abstract
Three methods of molecular dynamics simulation [Green-Kubo (G-K), non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) and reversed non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (RNEMD)], and two group contribution methods [UNIFAC-VISCO and Grunberg-Nissan (G-N)] were used to calculate the viscosity of mixtures of n-heptane and toluene (known as heptol). The results obtained for the viscosity and density of heptol were compared with reported experimental data, and the advantages and disadvantages of each method are discussed. Overall, the five methods showed good agreement between calculated and experimental viscosities. In all cases, the deviation was lower than 9%. It was found that, as the concentration of toluene increases, the deviation of the density of the mixture (as calculated with molecular dynamics methods) also increases, which directly affects the viscosity result obtained. Among the molecular simulation techniques evaluated here, G-K produced the best results, and represents the optimal balance between quality of result and time required for simulation. The NEMD method produced acceptable results for the viscosity of the system but required more simulation time as well as the determination of an appropriate shear rate. The RNEMD method was fast and eliminated the need to determine a set of values for shear rate, but introduced large fluctuations in measurements of shear rate and viscosity. The two group contribution methods were accurate and fast when used to calculate viscosity, but require knowledge of the viscosity of the pure compounds, which is a serious limitation for applications in complex multicomponent systems.

Abstract
An energy landscape view of phase separation and nonideality in binary mixtures is developed by exploring their potential energy landscape (PEL) as functions of temperature and composition. We employ molecular dynamics simulations to study a model that promotes structure breaking in the solute-solvent parent binary liquid, at low temperatures. The PEL of the system captures the potential energy distribution of the inherent structures (IS) of the system and is obtained by removing the kinetic energy (including that of intermolecular vibrations). The broader distribution of the inherent structure energy for structure breaking liquid than that of the structure making liquid demonstrates the larger role of entropy in stabilizing the parent liquid of the structure breaking type of binary mixtures. At high temperature, although the parent structure of the structure breaking binary mixture is homogenous, the corresponding inherent structure is found to be always phase separated, with a density pattern that exhibits marked correlation with the energy of its inherent structure. Over a broad range of intermediate inherent structure energy, bicontinuous phase separation prevails with interpenetrating stripes as signatures of spinodal decomposition. At low inherent structure energy, the structure is largely phase separated with one interface where as at high inherent structure energy we find nucleation type growth. Interestingly, at low temperature, the average inherent structure energy (<E{IS}>) exhibits a drop with temperature which signals the onset of crystallization in one of the phases while the other remains in the liquid state. The nonideal composition dependence of viscosity is anticorrelated with average inherent structure energy.

Abstract
Positive and negative deviations from the prediction of Raoult's Law on the composition dependence of a property of binary mixtures are often explained in terms of structure formation and structure breakage, respectively, upon mixing. However, a detailed theoretical description of these ideas seems to be lacking in the literature. Here we present the energy landscape view of nonideality of the viscosity of the binary mixture using two different models, one for structure former and the other for structure breaker. For both the models, the average inherent structure energy shows an inverse correlation with the viscosity. The inherent structures of the structure former indicate that there is a considerable enhancement of short range order due to stronger attractive interaction between the two constituent species. On the other hand, for the structure breaker, there is no such enhancement of short range order due to weaker interaction between the two constituent species. We find the inherent structures of the structure breaker to be phase separated in many cases where the parent phase is homogeneous. When the configurational entropy of the parent liquid is computed for the two model systems, we find that the configurational entropy also shows an inverse correlation with the viscosity in both the cases.

Abstract
We have carried out extensive molecular-dynamics simulation studies of binary Lennard-Jones mixtures to calculate directly the bridge function at state points lying in a very narrow single fluid phase region between the vapor-liquid and solid-liquid coexistence lines [Lamm and Hall, Fluid Phase Equilib. 182, 37 (2001); 194-197, 197 (2002)]. By varying the density close to the liquid-vapor coexistence line, significant deviations are observed at intermediate distances between the simulated bridge function and two widely used approximate closures in the integral equation theory of liquids, viz. the hybrid mean spherical approximation and the Duh-Henderson closures. The overall qualitative agreement remains the same with small variation in temperature that brings the system closer to either the liquid-vapor or liquid-solid coexistence curve. We also report a comparison of the direct and indirect correlation functions obtained from our simulation studies as well as from the integral equation theory of liquids. Our results emphasize the need for developing new closures applicable to binary fluid mixtures over a wide range of thermodynamic parameters.

Abstract
The expressions for zeroth, second, and fourth sum rules of the transverse stress autocorrelation function of a two-component fluid have been derived. These sum rules and Mori's memory function formalism have been used to study the shear viscosity of Ar-Kr and isotopic mixtures. It has been found that the theoretical result is in good agreement with the computer simulation result for the Ar-Kr mixture. The mass dependence of shear viscosity for different mole fractions shows that deviation from ideal linear model comes even from the mass difference in two species of the fluid mixture. At higher mass ratio, shear viscosity of the mixture is not explained by any of the empirical models.

Abstract
Within the mode-coupling theory for idealized glass transitions, we study the evolution of structural relaxation in binary mixtures of hard spheres with size ratios delta of the two components varying between 0.5 and 1.0. We find two scenarios for the glassy dynamics. For small size disparity, the mixing yields a slight extension of the glass regime. For larger size disparity, a plasticization effect is obtained, leading to stabilization of the liquid due to mixing. For all delta, a decrease of the elastic moduli at the transition due to mixing is predicted. A stiffening of the glass structure is found as is reflected by the increase of the Debye-Waller factors at the transition points. The critical amplitudes for density fluctuations at small and intermediate wave vectors decrease upon mixing, and thus the universal formulas for the relaxation near the plateau values describe a slowing down of the dynamics upon mixing for the first step of the two-step relaxation scenario. The results explain the qualitative features of mixing effects reported by Williams and van Megen [Phys. Rev. E 64, 041502 (2001)] for dynamical light-scattering measurements on binary mixtures of hard-sphere-like colloids with size ratio delta=0.6.
