Production of Alfvén waves by a rapidly expanding dense plasma

Varying magnetic field strength as an effective approach to boost up the plasma signal in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

Externally variable magnetic field was incorporated with the combination of laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to enhance the emission characteristics of aluminum (Al) plasma. Significant emission enhancement of laser induced plasma (LIP) was obtained at different magnetic field strengths, for instance, enhancement factors of about 1.2, 1.3 and 1.4 times were observed at field-strength of 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6 T, respectively. The electron-impact excitation rates and recombination process were increased at higher field-strengths, which led to the higher emission signal due the stronger plasma confinement by the field. The electron number density and electron temperature were measured using the spectroscopic techniques at several delay times. At higher field strengths, both electron density and electron excitation temperature showed an increased trend as compared to the case when No-field was applied. Hence, the research has significance for enhancing the plasma signal which led to improve the LIBS sensitivity.

Control of unsteady laser-produced plasma-flow with a multiple-coil magnetic nozzle

We report an experimental demonstration of controlling plasma flow direction with a magnetic nozzle consisting of multiple coils. Four coils are controlled separately to form an asymmetric magnetic field to change the direction of laser-produced plasma flow. The ablation plasma deforms the topology of the external magnetic field, forming a magnetic cavity inside and compressing the field outside. The compressed magnetic field pushes the plasma via the Lorentz force on a diamagnetic current: j × B in a certain direction, depending on the magnetic field configuration. Plasma and magnetic field structure formations depending on the initial magnetic field were simultaneously measured with a self-emission gated optical imager and B-dot probe, respectively, and the probe measurement clearly shows the difference of plasma expansion direction between symmetric and asymmetric initial magnetic fields. The combination of two-dimensional radiation hydrodynamic and three-dimensional hybrid simulations shows the control of the deflection angle with different number of coils, forming a plasma structure similar to that observed in the experiment.

Electrostatic structure of a magnetized laser-produced plasma

Measurements of the structure of the electrostatic fields produced by the expansion of a laser-produced plasma into a background magnetized plasma are presented. The three-dimensional measurements of the electrostatic field are made using an emissive probe that measures the time-varying plasma potential on two orthogonal planes, one across and one containing the background magnetic field. The inductive electric field is also calculated from probe measurements of the time-varying magnetic fields. Deviations from local charge neutrality at the level of 10(-4) generate a radial electrostatic field with peak strength an order of magnitude larger than the corresponding inductive field. The electrostatic energy density near full expansion is over an order of magnitude larger than that of the induced azimuthal electric field. These measurements show that electrostatic fields must be included in theoretical and computational models of collisionless coupling in magnetized point explosions of laser-produced plasmas and their relation to similar phenomena such as magnetospheric chemical releases.

Confinement and dynamics of laser-produced plasma expanding across a transverse magnetic field

The dynamics and confinement of laser-created plumes expanding across a transverse magnetic field have been investigated. 1.06 microm, 8 ns pulses from a neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet laser were used to create an aluminum plasma which was allowed to expand across a 0.64 T magnetic field. Fast photography, emission spectroscopy, and time of flight spectroscopy were used as diagnostic tools. Changes in plume structure and dynamics, enhanced emission and ionization, and velocity enhancement were observed in the presence of the magnetic field. Photographic studies showed that the plume is not fully stopped and diffuses across the field. The temperature of the plume was found to increase due to Joule heating and adiabatic compression. The time of flight studies showed that all of the species are slowed down significantly. A multiple peak temporal distribution was observed for neutral species.

Dynamics of a supersonic plume moving along a magnetized plasma

A particle-in-cell code is used to investigate the evolution of a density plume moving through a background plasma with supersonic speed directed along the confinement magnetic field. For scale lengths representative of laboratory and auroral phenomena, the major nonlinear effects identified by the present simulations are the formation of a bipolar current system from the ballistic electrons, the appearance of transient potential layers, and the carving of deep density cavities. A 3D magnetic topology is generated by the self-consistent ballistic and diamagnetic currents that accompany highly localized potential layers.
