Evidence for Ionic Bonding in YH(3-delta)

Inelastic neutron scattering evidence for anomalous H-H distances in metal hydrides

Hydrogen-containing materials are of fundamental as well as technological interest. An outstanding question for both is the amount of hydrogen that can be incorporated in such materials, because that determines dramatically their physical properties such as electronic and crystalline structure. The number of hydrogen atoms in a metal is controlled by the interaction of hydrogens with the metal and by the hydrogen-hydrogen interactions. It is well established that the minimal possible hydrogen-hydrogen distances in conventional metal hydrides are around 2.1 Å under ambient conditions, although closer H-H distances are possible for materials under high pressure. We present inelastic neutron scattering measurements on hydrogen in [Formula: see text] showing nonexpected scattering at low-energy transfer. The analysis of the spectra reveals that these spectral features in part originate from hydrogen vibrations confined by neighboring hydrogen at distances as short as 1.6 Å. These distances are much smaller than those found in related hydrides, thereby violating the so-called Switendick criterion. The results have implications for the design and creation of hydrides with additional properties and applications.

Formation of NaCl-type monodeuteride LaD by the disproportionation reaction of LaD2

Previous x-ray diffraction measurements revealed the pressure-induced decomposition of an fcc LaH2.3 into H-rich and H-poor fcc phases around 11 GPa. The present neutron diffraction measurements on LaD2 confirm the formation of NaCl-type LaD as a counterpart of the D-rich LaD2+δ by disproportionation. First-principles enthalpy and lattice dynamic calculations demonstrate that the NaCl-type LaH is stabilized at high pressures and can be recovered at ambient conditions. Finding the NaCl-type LaH will pave the way for investigations on the site-dependent nature of hydrogen-metal interactions.

Strong correlations in YH(3-delta) evidenced by Raman spectroscopy

Temperature dependent Raman measurements on insulating YH(3-delta) thin films are reported. With increasing temperature we observe a huge broadening of a line corresponding to an yttrium mode. This particular mode is assigned to a breathing vibration of the yttrium atoms around an octahedral hydrogen position. The line broadening is discussed in terms of a coupling between this breathing mode and the electron excited from an octahedral H vacancy into the 4d conduction band of Y, corroborating the strong correlation models for the electronic structure of YH3.

Electronic structure of the YH3 phase from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

Yttrium can be loaded with hydrogen up to high concentrations causing dramatic structural and electronic changes of the host lattice. We report on angle-resolved photoemission experiments of the Y trihydride phase. Most importantly, we find the absence of metal d bands at the Fermi level and a set of flat, H-induced bands located at much higher binding energy than predicted, indicating an increased electron affinity at H sites.
