99.6% spin-flip efficiency in the presence of a strong Siberian snake

Siberian Snakes, Figure-8 and Spin Transparency Techniques for High Precision Experiments with Polarized Hadron Beams in Colliders

We present a review of the possibilities to conduct experiments of high efficiency in the nuclear and high energy physics with spin-polarized beams in a collider complex, configuration of which includes Siberian snakes or figure-8 collider ring. Special attention is given to the recently elicited advantageous possibility to conduct high precision experiments in a regime of the spin transparency (ST) when the design global spin tune is close to zero. In this regime, the polarization control is realized by use of spin navigators (SN), which are compact special insertions of magnets dedicated to a high flexibility spin manipulation including frequent spin flips.

High Spin-Flip Efficiency at 255 GeV for Polarized Protons in a Ring With Two Full Siberian Snakes

In polarized proton collision experiments, it is highly advantageous to flip the spin of each bunch of protons during the stores to reduce the systematic errors. Experiments done at energies less than 2 GeV have demonstrated a spin-flip efficiency over 99%. At high energy colliders with Siberian snakes, a single magnet spin flipper does not work because of the large spin tune spread and the generation of multiple, overlapping resonances. A more sophisticated spin flipper, constructed of nine-dipole magnets, was used to flip the spin in the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. A special optics choice was also used to make the spin tune spread very small. A 97% spin-flip efficiency was measured at both 24 and 255 GeV. These results show that efficient spin flipping can be achieved at high energies using a nine-magnet spin flipper.

Achieving 99.9% proton spin-flip efficiency at higher energy with a small RF dipole

We recently used a new ferrite rf dipole to study spin flipping of a 2.1 GeV/c vertically polarized proton beam stored in the COSY Cooler Synchrotron in Jülich, Germany. We swept the rf dipole's frequency through an rf-induced spin resonance to flip the beam's polarization direction. After determining the resonance's frequency, we varied the frequency range, frequency ramp time, and number of flips. At the rf dipole's maximum strength and optimum frequency range and ramp time, we measured a spin-flip efficiency of 99.92+/-0.04%. This result, along with a similar 0.49 GeV/c IUCF result, indicates that, due to the Lorentz invariance of an rf dipole's transverse integralBdl and the weak energy dependence of its spin-resonance strength, an only 35% stronger rf dipole should allow efficient spin flipping in the 100 GeV BNL RHIC Collider or even the 7 TeV CERN Large Hadron Collider.

First spin flipping of a stored spin-1 polarized beam

We recently studied spin flipping of a 270 MeV vertically polarized deuteron beam stored in the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility Cooler Ring. We adiabatically swept an rf solenoid's frequency through an rf-induced spin resonance and observed its effect on the deuterons' vector and tensor polarizations. After optimizing the resonance crossing rate and maximizing the solenoid's voltage, we measured a vector spin-flip efficiency of 94.2%+/-0.3%. We also found striking behavior of the spin-1 tensor polarization.

Vector and tensor polarization lifetimes for a stored deuteron beam

The time dependence of the vector and tensor polarization of a 270 MeV stored deuteron beam was measured near a depolarizing resonance, which was induced by an oscillating, longitudinal magnetic field. The distance to the resonance was varied by changing the oscillation frequency. The measured ratio of the polarization lifetimes is tau(vector)/tau(tensor)=1.9+/-0.2. Assuming that the effect of the resonance is to induce transitions between magnetic substates m(I), we find that the transition rate between neighboring states (+1 and 0 or -1 and 0) is four times higher than between the states with m(I)=+1 and -1.
