Abstract
The development of polymers for optoelectronic applications is an important research area; however, a deeper understanding of the effects induced by mechanical deformations on their intrinsic properties is needed to expand their applicability and improve their durability. Despite the number of recent studies on the mechanochemistry of organic materials, the basic knowledge and applicability of such concepts in these materials are far from those for their inorganic counterparts. To bring light to this, here we employ molecular modeling techniques to evaluate the effects of mechanical deformations on the structural, optoelectronic, and reactivity properties of traditional semiconducting polymers, such as polyaniline (PANI), polythiophene (PT), poly (p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV), and polypyrrole (PPy). For this purpose, density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations were conducted for the distinct systems at varied stretching levels in order to identify the influence of structural deformations on the electronic structure of the systems. In general, it is noticed that the elongation process leads to an increase in electronic gaps, hypsochromic effects in the optical absorption spectrum, and small changes in local reactivities. Such changes can influence the performance of polymer-based devices, allowing us to establish significant structure deformation response relationships.

Abstract
The nature of optical excitations and the spatial extent of excitons in organic semiconductors, both of which determine exciton diffusion and carrier mobilities, are key factors for the proper understanding and tuning of material performances. Using a combined experimental and theoretical approach, we investigate the excitonic properties of meso-tetraphenyl porphyrin-Zn(II) crystals. We find that several bands contribute to the optical absorption spectra, beyond the four main ones considered here as the analogue to the four frontier molecular orbitals of the Gouterman model commonly adopted for the isolated molecule. By using many-body perturbation theory in the GW and Bethe-Salpeter equation approach, we interpret the experimental large optical anisotropy as being due to the interplay between long- and short-range intermolecular interactions. In addition, both localized and delocalized excitons in the π-stacking direction are demonstrated to determine the optical response, in agreement with recent experimental observations reported for organic crystals with similar molecular packing.

Abstract
In a first-principles study based on density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory, we address the interplay between intra- and intermolecular interactions in a J-aggregate formed by push-pull organic dyes by investigating its electronic and optical properties. We find that the most intense excitation dominating the spectral onset of the aggregate, i.e., the J-band, exhibits a combination of intramolecular charge transfer, coming from the push-pull character of the constituting dyes, and intermolecular charge transfer, due to the dense molecular packing. We also show the presence of a pure intermolecular charge-transfer excitation within the J-band, which is expected to play a relevant role in the emission properties of the J-aggregate. Our results shed light on the microscopic character of optical excitations of J-aggregates and offer new perspectives to further understand the nature of collective excitations in organic semiconductors.

Abstract
Pentacene is one of the most studied organic materials and in particular its optical properties have been the subject of intense research during the last two decades. In spite of such a widespread interest and of the extensive knowledge achieved so far, a number of issues are still debated. One of the most relevant questions concerns the role of polymorphism and how it affects the lowest-energy exciton, which appears in the visible region and is subject to a sizable Davydov splitting. We address this problem in a combined theoretical and experimental work, where the optical absorption properties of three pentacene polymorphs are investigated within the whole energy range of visible light. Optical spectra computed from first principles in the framework of many-body perturbation theory are directly compared with the polarization-resolved absorbance, measured for three different pentacene phases (the two bulk polymorphs and the thin-film phase). In this way, we unambiguously identify the two Davydov components of the first exciton and the optical fingerprints of each considered phase. With very good agreement between theory and experiment, we show that all polymorphs exhibit common features at the absorption onset, while phase-dependent characteristics appear only above 2 eV. We discuss the character of the lowest-lying singlet and triplet excitons, including dark ones, highlighting the contributions from the electronic bands and the role of the electron-hole interaction and of the local-field effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although poly(N-acyl dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole)s have attracted great attention as a new class of conducting polymers with highly stabilized energy levels, hyperbranched polymers based on this monomer type have not yet been studied. Thus, this work aims at the synthesis of novel hyperbranched polymers containing N-benzoyl dithieno[3,23,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole acceptor unit and 3-hexylthiophene donor moiety via the direct arylation polymerization method. Their structures, molecular weights and thermal properties were characterized via 1H NMR and FTIR spectroscopies, GPC, TGA, DSC and XRD measurements, and the optical properties were investigated by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies. RESULTS Hyperbranched conjugated polymers containing N-benzoyl dithieno[3,23,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole acceptor unit and 3-hexylthiophene donor moiety, linked with either triphenylamine or triphenylbenzene as branching unit, were obtained via direct arylation polymerization of the N-benzoyl dithieno[3,23,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole, 2,5-dibromo 3-hexylthiophene and tris(4-bromophenyl)amine (or 1,3,5-tris(4-bromophenyl)benzene) monomers. Organic solvent-soluble polymers with number-average molecular weights of around 18,000 g mol-1 were obtained in 80-92% yields. The DSC and XRD results suggested that the branching structure hindered the stacking of polymer chains, leading to crystalline domains with less ordered packing in comparison with the linear analogous polymers. The results revealed that the hyperbranched polymer with triphenylbenzene as the branching unit exhibited a strong red-shift of the maximum absorption wavelength, attributed to a higher polymer stacking order as a result of the planar structure of triphenylbenzene. CONCLUSION Both hyperbranched polymers with triphenylamine/triphenylbenzene as branching moieties exhibited high structural order in thin films, which can be promising for organic solar cell applications. The UV-vis absorption of the hyperbranched polymer containing triphenylbenzene as branching unit was red-shifted as compared with the triphenylamine-containing polymer, as a result of a higher chain packing degree.

Abstract
In a first-principles study based on many-body perturbation theory, we analyze the optical excitations of azobenzene-functionalized self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with increasing packing density and different terminations, considering for comparison the corresponding gas-phase molecules and dimers. Intermolecular coupling increases with the density of the chromophores independently of the functional groups. The intense [Formula: see text] resonance that triggers photo-isomerization is present in the spectra of isolated dimers and diluted SAMs, but it is almost completely washed out in tightly packed architectures. Intermolecular coupling is partially inhibited by mixing differently functionalized azobenzene derivatives, in particular when large groups are involved. In this way, the excitation band inducing the photo-isomerization process is partially preserved and the effects of dense packing partly counterbalanced. Our results suggest that a tailored design of azobenzene-functionalized SAMs which optimizes the interplay between the packing density of the chromophores and their termination can lead to significant improvements in the photo-switching efficiency of these systems.

Abstract
We present the results of a joint experimental and theoretical investigation concerning the effect of crystal packing on the electronic properties of the H2OEP molecule. Thin films, deposited in ultra high vacuum on metal surfaces, are investigated by combining valence band photoemission, inverse photoemission, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The spectra of the films are compared, when possible, with those measured in the gas phase. Once many-body effects are included in the calculations through the GW method, the electronic structure of H2OEP in the film and gas phase are accurately reproduced for both valence and conduction states. Upon going from an isolated molecule to the film phase, the electronic gap shrinks significantly and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and LUMO + 1 degeneracy is removed. The calculations show that the reduction of the transport gap in the film is entirely addressable to the enhancement of the electronic screening.

Abstract
We present a study on the photoluminescence (PL) of thin films of poly-(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV), non-stretched and uniaxially stretched. The experimental study was carried out using linear polarized light as the excitation beam, oriented either parallel or perpendicular to the stretch axis (S). The results showed that when the excitation light source has polarization perpendicularly oriented to the stretch direction, the emitted PL presents maximum intensity in the orientation S, and a minimum in the direction orthogonal to S. In order to understand this interesting phenomenon, we employ theoretical simulations at the atomistic level. We use classical molecular dynamics to simulate amorphous PPV films, non-stretched and stretched, from which we find a tendency of overall alignment of PV units to S, and of local clustering in herring-bone and π-stacking partial symmetries. Our study of optical activity of these kinds of clusters, performed through a quantum semi-empirical method, allows us to explain this polarization conversion behavior, and indicates the possibility of using underivatized PPV as the active layer for polarized electroluminescent devices.

Abstract
The investigation of the exciton dispersion (i.e. the exciton energy dependence as a function of the momentum carried by the electron-hole pair) is a powerful approach to identify the exciton character, ranging from the strongly localised Frenkel to the delocalised Wannier-Mott limiting cases. We illustrate this possibility at the example of four prototypical molecular solids (picene, pentacene, tetracene and coronene) on the basis of the parameter-free solution of the many-body Bethe-Salpeter equation. We discuss the mixing between Frenkel and charge-transfer excitons and the origin of their Davydov splitting in the framework of many-body perturbation theory and establish a link with model approaches based on molecular states. Finally, we show how the interplay between the electronic band dispersion and the exchange electron-hole interaction plays a fundamental role in setting the nature of the exciton. This analysis has a general validity holding also for other systems in which the electron wavefunctions are strongly localized, as in strongly correlated insulators.

Abstract
Narrow graphene nanoribbons exhibit substantial electronic bandgaps and optical properties fundamentally different from those of graphene. Unlike graphene--which shows a wavelength-independent absorbance for visible light--the electronic bandgap, and therefore the optical response, of graphene nanoribbons changes with ribbon width. Here we report on the optical properties of armchair graphene nanoribbons of width N=7 grown on metal surfaces. Reflectance difference spectroscopy in combination with ab initio calculations show that ultranarrow graphene nanoribbons have fully anisotropic optical properties dominated by excitonic effects that sensitively depend on the exact atomic structure. For N=7 armchair graphene nanoribbons, the optical response is dominated by absorption features at 2.1, 2.3 and 4.2 eV, in excellent agreement with ab initio calculations, which also reveal an absorbance of more than twice the one of graphene for linearly polarized light in the visible range of wavelengths.

Abstract
The present investigation reports for the first time a detailed theoretical analysis of the optical absorption spectra of corannulene-based materials using state-of-the-art first-principles many-body GW-BSE theory. The study specifically addresses the nature of optical excitations for predictions regarding suitability for device fabrication. The well-defined structure-correlation relationship in functionalized corannulenes is used in a focused investigation of the predicted optoelectronic properties in both the isolated state and bulk crystals. The findings suggest that the excitonic properties are strongly dependent on the specific substituent group as well as the crystalline arrangement. Arylethynyl-substituted corannulene derivatives are shown to be the most suitable for device purposes.

Abstract
We investigate the optical properties of edge-functionalized graphene nanosystems, focusing on the formation of junctions and charge-transfer excitons. We consider a class of graphene structures that combine the main electronic features of graphene with the wide tunability of large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. By investigating prototypical ribbon-like systems, we show that, upon convenient choice of functional groups, low-energy excitations with remarkable charge-transfer character and large oscillator strength are obtained. These properties can be further modulated through an appropriate width variation, thus spanning a wide range in the low-energy region of the UV-vis spectra. Our results are relevant in view of designing all-graphene optoelectronic nanodevices, which take advantage of the versatility of molecular functionalization, together with the stability and the electronic properties of graphene nanostructures.

Abstract
The electrical and friction properties of ω-(trans-4-stilbene)alkylthiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au(111) were investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS). The sample surface was uniformly covered with a molecular film consisting of very small grains. Well-ordered and flat monolayer islands were formed after the sample was heated in nitrogen at 120 °C for 1 h. While lattice resolved AFM images revealed a crystalline phase in the islands, the area between islands showed no order. The islands exhibit substantial reduction (50%) in friction, supporting the existence of good ordering. NEXAFS measurements revealed an average upright molecular orientation in the film, both before and after heating, with a narrower tilt-angle distribution for the heated fim. Conductance-AFM measurements revealed a 2 orders of magnitude higher conductivity on the ordered islands than on the disordered phase. We propose that the conductance enhancement is a result of a better π-π stacking between the trans-stilbene molecular units as a result of improved ordering in islands.

Abstract
We investigate the role of conformational disorder and intermolecular interactions on the electronic structure of amorphous clusters of polyfluorenes. Classical molecular dynamics simulations are used to determine probable molecular geometries and chain packing, and first-principles density functional theory calculations are employed to determine electronic structure and orbital localization properties. Intramolecular and intermolecular effects are disentangled by contrasting results for densely packed oligomer clusters and for ensembles of isolated oligomers with the same intramolecular geometries. Our simulations show that intermolecular disorder allows for nearly planar configurations of interacting fluorenes compared to the isolated molecules. This rationalizes the experimentally detected formation of the planar crystalline morphologies that frequently accompany twisted glassy configurations in fluorene films. The energy gap (HOMO-LUMO gap) significantly decreases for planar configurations. The electron and hole orbital energies are strongly dependent on both torsional angles and intermolecular interactions. This leads to strong localization of electronic states in amorphous polymer aggregates, which is analyzed by examining the respective orbital participation ratios. Notably, the energies of unoccupied levels show stronger dependence on the conformational disorder, compared to that of occupied levels. This results in the more probable formation of trap states near the edge of the conduction band than near the valence band.

Abstract
Optical properties in conjugated polymers such as poly(p-phenylenevinylene) and poly(9,9-dialkyl-fluorene) have been studied using time-dependent density functional theory. In the calculations of the optical properties, real-space and real-time techniques are employed. We follow the linear responses of the systems under externally applied perturbations in the real time. To estimate the polymer spectra, we have calculated the responses of oligomers of different lengths and obtained the extrapolated values. The estimated polymer spectra agree with the experiments reasonably well.

Abstract
Excited state properties of one-dimensional molecular materials are dominated by many-body interactions resulting in strongly bound confined excitons. These effects cannot be neglected or treated as a small perturbation and should be appropriately accounted for by electronic structure methodologies. We use adiabatic time-dependent density functional theory to investigate the electronic structure of one-dimensional organic semiconductors, conjugated polymers. Various commonly used functionals are applied to calculate the lowest singlet and triplet state energies and oscillator strengths of the poly(phenylenevinylene) and ladder-type (poly)(para-phenylene) oligomers. Local density approximations and gradient-corrected functionals cannot describe bound excitonic states due to lack of an effective attractive Coulomb interaction between photoexcited electrons and holes. In contrast, hybrid density functionals, which include long-range nonlocal and nonadiabatic corrections in a form of a fraction of Hartree-Fock exchange, are able to reproduce the excitonic effects. The resulting finite exciton sizes are strongly dependent on the amount of the orbital exchange included in the functional.

Abstract
We have applied the quantum Monte Carlo method and tight-binding modeling to calculate the binding energy of biexcitons in semiconductor carbon nanotubes for a wide range of diameters and chiralities. For typical nanotube diameters we find that biexciton binding energies are much larger than previously predicted from variational methods, which easily brings the biexciton binding energy above the room temperature threshold.

Abstract
We present the absorption coefficient alpha(omega), the transverse dielectric function epsilon(omega), the optical conductivity sigma(omega), and the reflectance R(omega) calculated for an emeraldine salt conducting polymer in its crystalline 3D polaronic structure. We utilize Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT) electronic wavefunctions and energies implemented in the expression of the macroscopic transverse dielectric function in the framework of the band theory without the electron-hole interaction. Contributions of intra-band transitions are taken into account by adding a Drude-like term to the dielectric function calculated ab initio. Comparison with optical properties, recently measured on high-quality emeraldine salts (Lee, K.; Cho, S.; Park, S. H.; Heeger, A. J.; Lee, C.-W.; Lee, S. H. Nature 2006, 441, 65), and with optical absorption spectra, recorded on other emeraldine salts, is very satisfactory. The calculated spectra are discussed in terms of energy-band structure, density of states, inter- and intra-band transitions, and transverse dielectric function.

Abstract
We show that the electronic and optical properties of silicon nanowires, with different size and orientation, are dominated by important many-body effects. The electronic and excitonic gaps, calculated within first principles, agree with the available experimental data. Huge excitonic effects, which depend strongly on wire orientation and size, characterize the optical spectra. Modeling porous silicon as a collection of interacting nanowires, we find an absorption spectrum which is in very good agreement with experimental measurements only when the electron-hole interaction is included.

Abstract
By employing the coupled-cluster equation of motion method (EOM/CCSD) for excited-state structures, we have investigated the structure dependence of the singlet and triplet exciton splittings, through extensive calculations for polythiophene (PT), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), poly(thienylenevinylene) (PTV), polyparaphenylene vinylene (PPV), MEHPPV, polyparaphenylene ethylene (PPE), polyfluorene (PFO), and ladder-type polyparaphenylene (mLPPP). The results for the polymer are extrapolated through computations for the oligomers with increasing length. Recent investigations have been quite controversial about whether the internal quantum efficiency of electroluminescence could be higher than the 25% spin statistics limit or not in polymeric materials. Using a simple relationship between the exciton formation rate and the excitation energy level, we have discussed the material-dependent ratios of singlet and triplet exciton formation, which are in good agreement with the magnetic-field resonance detected transient spectroscopy measurement by Wohlgenannt et al. for a series of electronic polymers. This provides another piece of evidence to support the view that the internal quantum efficiency for conjugated polymers can exceed the 25% limit.

Abstract
Absorption and emission in polymer aggregates is studied theoretically, taking into account excitonic (intermolecular) coupling, exciton-phonon (EP) coupling, and disorder, all treated on equal footing within a generalized Holstein Hamiltonian with numerically generated eigenmodes and energies. The disorder is modeled as a Gaussian distribution of molecular transition frequency offsets of width sigma and spatial correlation length l(0). Both herringbone (HB) and lamellar aggregate morphologies are considered. The emission spectral line shape is shown to undergo marked changes in response to increasing disorder, with the intensity of the ac-polarized 0-0 emission peak generally increasing relative to the replica intensities (0-1,0-2,[ellipsis (horizontal)]) as sigma increases and/or as l(0) decreases. This is contrary to the behavior of the b-polarized component of the 0-0 intensity, which, in HB aggregates, decreases with increasing disorder. Comparisons are made to analogous trends in oligomer aggregates. Analytical results are obtained in the strong EP coupling regime appropriate for conjugated polymers while treating the disorder perturbatively. A method for uniquely determining sigma and l(0) from the emission and absorption spectra is presented. Applications are made to absorption and low-temperature emission in thin films of regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene), with excellent agreement between theory and experiment obtained for a spatial correlation length of only 3-4 molecules.

Abstract
Low-temperature, single-molecule spectroscopy can provide unparalleled access to the primary emissive species of conjugated polymers. We demonstrate this with the example of one of the most commonly studied polymers, poly(2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexoxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene), MEH-PPV, which is shown to exhibit sharp fluorescence signatures over one hundred times narrower than the ensemble. These unprecedented narrow emission features can be assigned to single chromophores on the polymer chain, which are selectively addressed by the narrow band excitation. As with organic dye systems, the emission from single chromophores is not static with time, but shows a substantial spectral fluctuation. We find that, for single chromophores, this spectral fluctuation always follows a universal Gaussian statistical distribution. High-resolution spectroscopy provides unique insight into low-energy vibrational modes in the polymer emission, which are generally inaccessible with conventional spectroscopic methods such as site-selective fluorescence or Raman spectroscopy. Interchromophoric coupling can also occur owing to the flexible nature of the polymer backbone. This leads to substantial spectral broadening and a loss of resolution in the vibronic progression. We observe reversible switching within one single molecule between narrow and broad emission, which directly correlates with a discrete switching in emission intensity. We conclude that one and the same single molecule can support aggregated and nonaggregated emission, that is, emission from isolated and aggregated chromophores in one single molecule, rather than the tendency for aggregate emission being intrinsic to the molecule.

Abstract
The diverse steady-state spectroscopic properties of poly(di-n-octylfluorene) are addressed from a molecular-level perspective. Modeling of representative oligomers support the experimental observation of at least three distinguishable classes of conformational isomers with differing chain torsion angles. One class appears to be populated by a single compact structural isomer, and this conforms to the so-called beta phase. A rigorous Franck-Condon analysis of the photoluminescence in conjunction with Frenkel-type exciton band structure calculations is performed. These results accurately reproduce all major spectral features of the photoabsorption and those of singlet exciton emission.

Abstract
The optical absorption spectrum of the carbon (4,2) nanotube is computed using an ab initio many-body approach which takes into account excitonic effects. We develop a new method involving a local basis set which is symmetric with respect to the screw-symmetry of the tube. Such a method has the advantages of scaling faster than plane-wave methods and allowing for a precise determination of the symmetry character of the single-particle states, two-particle excitations, and selection rules. The binding energy of the lowest, optically active states is approximately 0.8 eV. The corresponding exciton wave functions are delocalized along the circumference of the tube and localized in the direction of the tube axis.
