Symmetry-dependent multielectron excitations near the C 1s ionization threshold and distortion of the shape resonance in CO(2)

Gas-to-cluster effects in S 2p-excited SF(6)

High resolution X-ray spectroscopic studies on free SF6 molecules and SF6 clusters near the S 2p ionization thresholds are reported. Spectral changes occurring in clusters for the intense molecular-like S 2p1/2,3/2 → 6a1g-, 2t2g-, and 4eg-resonances are examined in detail. Neither gas-to-cluster spectral shifts nor changes in peak shape are observed for the pre-edge 6a1g-band. Significant changes in band shape and distinct gas-to-cluster shifts occur in the S 2p1/2,3/2 → 2t2g- and 4eg-transitions. These are found in the S 2p-ionization continua. The quasiatomic approach is used to assign the experimental results. It is shown that a convolution of asymmetric and symmetric contributions from Lorentzian and Gaussian line shapes allows us to model the spectral distribution of oscillator strength for the S 2p1/2,3/2 → 2t2g-, and 4eg-transitions. The asymmetry is due to trapping of the photoelectron within the finite size potential barrier. The Lorentzian contribution is found to be dominating in the line shape of the S 2p → 2t2g- and 4eg-bands. The spectroscopic parameters of the spin-orbit components of both the 2t2g- and 4eg-bands are extracted and their gas-to-cluster changes are analyzed. The photoelectron trapping times in free and clustered SF6 molecules are determined. Specifically, it is shown that spectral changes in clusters reflected in core-to-valence-transitions are due to a superposition of the singly scattered photoelectron waves at the neighboring molecules with the primary and multiply scattered waves within the molecular cage.

Internal inelastic scattering satellite probed by molecular-frame photoelectron angular distributions from CO2

The molecular-frame photoelectron angular distribution (MFPAD) of the satellite accompanying the C 1s photoline of the CO2 molecule has been measured at the C 1s(2sigmag)-->4sigmau* shape resonance, using electron-ion multicoincidence momentum spectroscopy. The observed MFPAD indicates that the conjugate satellite is excited by internal inelastic scattering. In this scenario, a photoelectron is ejected from the C 1s(2sigmag) orbital along the molecular axis and collides with an O lone-pair electron in the highest occupied molecular orbital 1pig. Then one of the colliding electrons is trapped to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital 2piu*, while the other is emitted as a satellite photoelectron of sigmag symmetry, losing the information of the original photoelectron emission direction and parity.

Experimental evidence of interatomic coulombic decay from the auger final states in argon dimers

Interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) from an Auger-final dicationic state is observed in the Ar dimer. A 2p inner-shell vacancy created by photoionization is replaced with 3s and 3p vacancies via intra-atomic Auger decay. The Auger-final dicationic state is subject to ICD in which one of the 3p electrons in the same Ar atom fills the 3s vacancy while one of the 3p electrons from the neighboring Ar atom is emitted as an ICD electron. This ICD process is unambiguously identified by electron-ion-ion coincidence spectroscopy in which the kinetic energy of the ICD electron and the kinetic energy release between Ar+ and Ar2+ are measured in coincidence.

Shape resonances in molecular clusters: the 2t2gshape resonances in S 2p-excited sulfur hexafluoride clusters

Sulfur hexafluoride clusters are investigated in the S 2p excitation regime. For the first time special emphasis is put on high-energy resolution spectroscopy of shape resonances in free clusters. We have investigated the 2t(2g)-shape resonance occurring above the S 2p threshold as one typical example to study size effects that are related to shape resonances. A small redshift of this resonance of 30 +/- 5 meV occurs in clusters relative to the free molecule and changes in line shape are observed. A double-barrier optical potential model is applied for the analysis of intra- and intermolecular effects occurring in SF6 clusters, which is suitable for rationalizing the experimentally observed spectral changes. The experimental and theoretical results are briefly discussed in comparison to previous work on core-excited van der Waals clusters containing diatomic molecules.
