Collective directed transport of symmetrically coupled lattices in symmetric periodic potentials

Current reversals and synchronization in coupled ratchets

Current reversal is an intriguing phenomenon that has been central to recent experimental and theoretical investigations of transport based on ratchet mechanism. By considering a system of two interacting ratchets, we demonstrate how the coupling can be used to control the reversals. In particular, we find that current reversal that exists in a single driven ratchet system can ultimately be eliminated with the presence of a second ratchet. For specific coupling strengths a current-reversal free regime has been detected. Furthermore, in the fully synchronized state characterized by the coupling threshold k(th), a specific driving amplitude a(opt) is found for which the transport is optimum.

Directed molecular transport in an oscillating channel with randomness

Stability of directed transport and molecular separation in a symmetric channel is analyzed. The original mechanism is based on harmonic spatial oscillations of the channel, under which the system exhibits multiple regimes of a directed transport. The particles may be forced to move with different velocities and directions as the amplitude and/or frequency of the oscillations are adjusted to a proper resonance. The advantage of this mechanism in contrast to the ratchet systems is that the average particle velocity is larger than the velocity of the growing of the width of the particle spatial distribution. We have studied the stability of the directed transport with regard to random impacts to the channel parameters and oscillation frequency. Here we present the results of the simulations which show that the ability of the combined longitudinally and transversally vibrating randomized dynamic channel to perform directed molecular transport remains resilient to quite intensive random channel structure fluctuations (50-60%) and relatively strong random impacts to its oscillations (15-20%).

Deterministic directed transport of inertial particles in a flashing ratchet potential

Deterministic directed transport of inertia particles in a periodically on-off ratchet potential is investigated. We find that the directed transport can be induced by a finite inertia; i.e., in the overdamped case, no directed motion of the system can be observed. It is shown that a critical threshold of the ratchet asymmetry is required for the system to achieve a net current. Directed transport can be greatly enhanced when the coupling strength of particles is increased. An appropriate match of the coupling, the flashing period, and the damping can give rise to the best efficiency of transport. The commensurate effect on the directed transport, which originates from the spatial competition between the period of the potential and the static length of the coupling, is analyzed.

Nonlinear dynamics, rectification, and phase locking for particles on symmetrical two-dimensional periodic substrates with dc and circular ac drives

We investigate the dynamical motion of particles on a two-dimensional symmetric periodic substrate in the presence of both a dc drive along a symmetry direction of the periodic substrate and an additional circular ac drive. For large enough ac drives, the particle orbit encircles one or more potential maxima of the periodic substrate. In this case, when an additional increasing dc drive is applied in the longitudinal direction, the longitudinal velocity increases in a series of discrete steps that are integer multiples of a omega/(2 pi), where a is the lattice constant of the substrate. Fractional steps can also occur. These integer and fractional steps correspond to distinct stable dynamical orbits. A number of these phases also show a rectification in the positive or negative transverse direction where a nonzero transverse velocity occurs in the absence of a dc transverse drive. We map out the phase diagrams of the regions of rectification as a function of ac amplitude, and find a series of tongues. Most of the features, including the steps in the longitudinal velocity and the transverse rectification, can be captured with a simple toy model and by arguments from nonlinear maps. We have also investigated the effects of thermal disorder and incommensuration on the rectification phenomena, and find that for increasing disorder, the rectification regions are gradually smeared and the longitudinal velocity steps are no longer flat but show a linearly increasing velocity.

Directed molecular transport in an oscillating symmetric channel

A mechanism responsible for the directed transport and molecular separation in a symmetric channel is proposed. We found that under the action of spatial harmonic oscillations of the channel, the system exhibits a directed transport in either direction, presenting multiple current reversals as the amplitude and/or frequency of the oscillations are varied. The particles of different masses may be forced to move with different velocities in the same or in the opposite directions by properly adjusting driving parameters. The directed transport can be produced in both directions even in the absence of thermal noise; the latter can speed up or slow down the transport depending on the system parameters.

Internal mode mechanism for collective energy transport in extended systems

We study directed energy transport in homogeneous nonlinear extended systems in the presence of homogeneous ac forces and dissipation. We show that the mechanism responsible for unidirectional motion of topological excitations is the coupling of their internal and translation degrees of freedom. Our results lead to a selection rule for the existence of such motion based on resonances that explain earlier symmetry analysis of this phenomenon. The direction of motion is found to depend both on the initial and the relative phases of the two harmonic drivings, even in the presence of noise.
