Measurements of the shear Alfvén wave dispersion for finite perpendicular wave number

Kinetic Alfvén waves and auroral particle acceleration: a review

Shear mode Alfvén waves are the carriers of field-aligned currents in the auroral zones of Earth and other planets. These waves travel along the magnetic field lines, coupling the outer magnetosphere with the ionosphere. However, in ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) theory, the shear mode Alfvén wave does not carry a parallel electric field that could accelerate auroral particles. This can be modified by including kinetic effects, which lead to a parallel electric field when the perpendicular wavelength becomes comparable to the electron inertial length or the ion acoustic gyroradius. These small perpendicular wavelengths can be formed by phase mixing, ionospheric feedback, or nonlinear effects. Kinetic Alfvén waves are further constrained by their interaction with the ionosphere, which acts as a reflector for these waves. In addition, the strong plasma gradients in the topside ionosphere form an effective resonator that leads to fluctuations on time scales of seconds. These rapidly changing parallel electric fields can lead to broadband acceleration of auroral electrons, often called the Alfvénic aurora. Such interactions do not only take place in Earth's magnetosphere, but have also been observed in Jupiter's magnetosphere by the Juno satellite.

Laboratory plasma devices for space physics investigation

In the past decades, laboratory experiments have contributed significantly to the exploration of the fundamental physics of space plasmas. Since 1908, when Birkeland invented the first terrella device, numerous experimental apparatuses have been designed and constructed for space physics investigations, and beneficial achievements have been gained using these laboratory plasma devices. In the present work, we review the initiation, development, and current status of laboratory plasma devices for space physics investigations. The notable experimental apparatuses are categorized and discussed according to the central scientific research topics they are related to, such as space plasma waves and instabilities, magnetic field generation and reconnection, and modeling of the Earth's and planetary space environments. The characteristics of each device, including the plasma configuration, plasma generation, and control method, are highlighted and described in detail. In addition, their contributions to reveal the underlying physics of space observations are also briefly discussed. For the scope of future research, various challenges are discussed, and suggestions are provided for the construction of new and enhanced devices. The objective of this work is to allow space physicists and planetary scientists to enhance their knowledge of the experimental apparatuses and the corresponding experimental techniques, thereby facilitating the combination of spacecraft observation, numerical simulation, and laboratory experiments and consequently promoting the development of space physics.

Ferrite based antennae for launching Alfvén waves

Whistler and Alfvén waves are known to scatter mirror-trapped electrons and protons into the loss cone of the earth's dipole magnetic field. An array of satellites with properly phased antennas can be used to artificially reduce the flux of energetic particles from regions where their flux has been naturally or artificially pumped. In any space based system, the power required to drive antennas is at a premium. We present here experimental evidence that the efficiency of an antenna can be greatly enhanced with the use of ferrite cores with high relative magnetic permeability μ. Ferrite-based antennas were constructed to launch Alfvén waves in a magnetized plasma. The wave magnetic field of shear Alfvén waves launched with a ferrite core was by the magnetization factor μ larger than that of a similar antenna without a ferrite. Combining multiple ferrite antennas allowed control of the injected perpendicular wavelength. This novel technique can be used to efficiently launch low frequency waves with amplitude above the threshold required for nonlinear triggering.

Measurements of inertial limit Alfvén wave dispersion for finite perpendicular wave number

Measurements of the dispersion relation for shear Alfvén waves as a function of perpendicular wave number are reported for the inertial regime for which V{A}>V{Te}. The parallel phase velocity and damping are determined as k{ perpendicular} varies and the measurements are compared to theoretical predictions. The comparison shows that the best agreement between theory and experiment is achieved for a fully complex plasma dispersion relation which includes the effects of electron collisions.

Electron trapping in shear Alfvén waves that power the aurora

Results from 1D Vlasov drift-kinetic plasma simulations reveal how and where auroral electrons are accelerated along Earth's geomagnetic field. In the warm plasma sheet, electrons become trapped in shear Alfvén waves, preventing immediate wave damping. As waves move to regions with larger v(Te)/v(A), their parallel electric field decreases, and the trapped electrons escape their influence. The resulting electron distribution functions compare favorably with in situ observations, demonstrating for the first time a self-consistent link between Alfvén waves and electrons that form aurora.

Cross-scale nonlinear coupling and plasma energization by Alfvén waves

We present a new channel for the nonlocal transport of wave energy from the large (MHD) scales to the small (kinetic) scales generated by the resonant decay of MHD Alfvén waves into kinetic Alfvén waves. This process does not impose any restriction on the wave numbers or frequencies of initial MHD waves, which makes it superior compared to the mechanisms of spectral transport studied before. Because of dissipative properties of the nonlinearly driven kinetic Alfvén waves, the decay leads to plasma heating and particle acceleration, which is observed in a variety of space and astrophysical plasmas. Two examples in the solar corona and the terrestrial magnetosphere are briefly discussed.

Shear Alfvén wave perpendicular propagation from the kinetic to the inertial regime

We report on observations of shear Alfvén waves radiated from a source of small transverse size, and the subsequent radial confinement of wave magnetic field energy within a cylindrical plasma. The radius of confinement lies between the kinetic regime of the bulk plasma and the inertial regime at the plasma edge; this radius is found to be a function of wave frequency. Numerical calculations using kinetic theory predict a zero in the perpendicular group velocity at a radius which varies in accord with the observations. An analytic expression for the perpendicular group velocity (valid for small perpendicular wave numbers) is given in the vicinity of the zero crossing.
