Abstract
We study by femtosecond infrared spectroscopy the ultrafast and persistent photoinduced phase transition of the Rb0.94Mn0.94Co0.06[Fe(CN)6]0.98 ⋅ 0.2H2O material, induced at room temperature by a single laser shot. This system exhibits a charge-transfer based phase transition with a 75 K wide thermal hysteresis, centred at room temperature, from the low temperature Mn3+-N-C-Fe2+ tetragonal phase to the high temperature Mn2+-N-C-Fe3+ cubic phase. At room temperature, the photoinduced phase transition is persistent. However, the out-of-equilibrium dynamics leading to this phase is multi-scale. Femtosecond infrared spectroscopy, particularly sensitive to local reorganizations through the evolution of the frequency of the N-C vibration modes with the different characteristic electronic states, reveals that at low laser fluence and on short time scale, the photoexcitation of the Mn3+-N-C-Fe2+ phase creates small charge-transfer polarons [Mn2+-N-C-Fe3+]* within ≃250 fs. The local trapping of photoinduced intermetallic charge-transfer is characterized by the appearance of a polaronic infrared band, due to the surrounding Mn2+-N-C-Fe2+ species. Above a threshold fluence, when a critical fraction of small CT-polarons is reached, the macroscopic phase transition to the persistent Mn2+-N-C-Fe3+ cubic phase occurs within ≃ 100 ps. This non-linear photo-response results from elastic cooperativity, intrinsic to a switchable lattice and reminiscent of a feedback mechanism.

Abstract
Light-induced polarization switchable molecular materials have attracted attention for decades owing to their potential remote manipulation and ultrafast responsiveness. Here we report a valence tautomeric (VT) complex with an enantiopure chiral ligand. By a suitable choice of counter anions, a significant improvement in photoconversion has been demonstrated, leading to novel photo-responsive polarization switching materials.

Abstract
Ultrafast photoinduced phase transitions at room temperature, driven by a single laser shot and persisting long after stimuli, represent emerging routes for ultrafast control over materials' properties. Time-resolved studies provide fundamental mechanistic insight into far-from-equilibrium electronic and structural dynamics. Here we study the photoinduced phase transformation of the Rb0.94Mn0.94Co0.06[Fe(CN)6]0.98 material, designed to exhibit a 75 K wide thermal hysteresis around room temperature between MnIIIFeII tetragonal and MnIIFeIII cubic phases. We developed a specific powder sample streaming technique to monitor by ultrafast X-ray diffraction the structural and symmetry changes. We show that the photoinduced polarons expand the lattice, while the tetragonal-to-cubic photoinduced phase transition occurs within 100 ps above threshold fluence. These results are rationalized within the framework of the Landau theory of phase transition as an elastically-driven and cooperative process. We foresee broad applications of the streaming powder technique to study non-reversible and ultrafast dynamics.

Abstract
Future molecular microelectronics require the electronic conductivity of the device to be tunable without impairing the voltage control of the molecular electronic properties. This work reports the influence of an interface between a semiconducting polyaniline polymer or a polar poly-D-lysine molecular film and one of two valence tautomeric complexes, i.e., [CoIII(SQ)(Cat)(4-CN-py)2] ↔ [CoII(SQ)2(4-CN-py)2] and [CoIII(SQ)(Cat)(3-tpp)2] ↔ [CoII(SQ)2(3-tpp)2]. The electronic transitions and orbitals are identified using X-ray photoemission, X-ray absorption, inverse photoemission, and optical absorption spectroscopy measurements that are guided by density functional theory. Except for slightly modified binding energies and shifted orbital levels, the choice of the underlying substrate layer has little effect on the electronic structure. A prominent unoccupied ligand-to-metal charge transfer state exists in [CoIII(SQ)(Cat)(3-tpp)2] ↔ [CoII(SQ)2(3-tpp)2] that is virtually insensitive to the interface between the polymer and tautomeric complexes in the CoII high-spin state.

Abstract
Molecular spin-crossover (SCO) compounds constitute a promising class of photoactive materials exhibiting efficient photoinduced phase transitions (PIPTs). Taking advantage of the unique, picture-perfect reproducibility of the spin-transition properties in the compound [Fe(HB(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)3 )2 ], the spatiotemporal dynamics of the PIPT within the thermodynamic metastability (hysteretic) region of a single crystal is dissected, using pump-probe optical microscopy. Beyond a threshold laser-excitation density, complete PIPTs are evidenced, with conversion rates up to 200 switched molecules per absorbed photon. It is shown that the PIPT takes place through the sequential activation of two (molecular and macroscopic) switching mechanisms, occurring on sub-microsecond and millisecond timescales, governed by the intramolecular and free energy barriers of the system, respectively. The main finding here is that the thermodynamic metastability has strictly no influence on the sub-millisecond switching dynamics. Indeed, before this millisecond timescale, the response of the crystal to the laser excitation involves a gradual, molecular conversion process, as if there were no hysteresis loop. Consequently, in this regime, even a 100% photoinduced conversion may not give rise to a PIPT. These results provide new insight on the intrinsic dynamical limits of the PIPT, which is an important issue from a technological perspective.

Abstract
Mixed-valence polycyanides (Prussian Blue analogues) possess a rich palette of properties spanning from room-temperature ferromagnetism to zero thermal expansion, which can be tuned by chemical modifications or the application of external stimuli (temperature, pressure, light irradiation). While molecule-based materials can combine physical and chemical properties associated with molecular-scale building blocks, their successful integration into real devices depends primarily on higher-order properties such as crystal size, shape, morphology, and organization. Herein a study of a new reduced-dimensionality system based on Prussian Blue analogues (PBAs) is presented. The system is built up by means of a modified Langmuir-Blodgett technique, where the PBA is synthesized from precursors in a self-limited reaction on a clay mineral surface. The focus of this work is understanding the magnetic properties of the PBAs in different periodic, low-dimensional arrangements, and the influence of the "on surface" synthesis on the final properties and dimensionality of the system.

Abstract
Various molecular magnetic compounds whose magnetic properties can be controlled by external stimuli have been developed, including electrochemically, photochemically, and chemically tunable bulk magnets as well as a phototunable antiferromagnetic phase of single chain magnet. In addition, we present tunable paramagnetic mononuclear complexes ranging from spin crossover complexes and valence tautomeric complexes to Co complexes in which orbital angular momentum can be switched. Furthermore, we recently developed several switchable clusters and one-dimensional coordination polymers. The switching of magnetic properties can be achieved by modulating metals, ligands, and molecules/ions in the second sphere of the complexes.

Abstract
Photomagnetism in molecular systems is a new development in molecular magnetism. It traces back to 1982 and 1984 when a transient effect and then the light-induced excited-spin-state-trapping effect was discovered in spin-crossover complexes. The present contribution gives a definition of the phenomenon, a process that changes the magnetism of a (molecular) system after absorption of a photon. It is limited to the discussion of photomagnetism based on metal-metal electron transfer in clusters and extended molecule-based magnets. The paper is organized around the main pairs of spin bearers, which allowed us to evidence and to study the phenomenon: Cu-Mo, Co-Fe, and Co-W. For each metallic pair, we report and discuss the conditions of appearance of the effect and its characteristics, both in extended structures and in molecular units: structure, spectroscopy, magnetism, thermodynamics and kinetics, and applications. We conclude with some brief prospects. The field is in rapid expansion. We are convinced that the interaction of photons with magnetized matter, to provide original magnetic properties, will meet more and more interest in the future.

Abstract
Fc-PTM is a valence tautomeric radical, where the ferrocene (Fc) group, a good electron donor, is linked by an ethylenic spacer to a perchlorotriphenylmethyl radical (PTM(*)), a good electron acceptor. In solution this compound exists mainly in the neutral Fc-PTM(*) form which can be photoexcited through an intramolecular electron transfer to the zwitterionic Fc(+*)-PTM(-) form. By contrast, in crystals of Fc-PTM at room temperature both the neutral and the zwitterionic forms coexist, pointing to a true bistability phenomenon. We rationalize these findings accounting for the role of intermolecular electrostatic interactions in Fc-PTM crystals. In fact the energy of the zwitterionic Fc(+*)-PTM(-) form is lowered in the crystal by attractive electrostatic intermolecular interactions and the cooperative nature of these interactions explains the observed coexistence of neutral Fc-PTM(*) and zwitterionic Fc(+*)-PTM(-) species. The temperature evolution of Mossbauer spectra of Fc-PTM is quantitatively reproduced adopting a bottom-up modeling strategy that combines a molecular model, derived from optical spectra of Fc-PTM in solution, with a model for intermolecular electrostatic interactions, supported by quantum-chemical calculations. Fc-PTM then offers the first experimental demonstration of bistability induced by electrostatic interactions in crystals of valence tautomeric donor-acceptor molecules.

Abstract
Single crystals of the {Fe (II)(pyrazine)[Pt(CN) 4]} spin crossover complex were synthesized by a slow diffusion method. The crystals exhibit a thermal spin transition around room temperature (298 K), which is accompanied by a 14 K wide hysteresis loop. X-ray single-crystal analysis confirms that this compound crystallizes in the tetragonal P4/ mmm space group in both spin states. Within the thermal hysteresis region a complete bidirectional photoconversion was induced between the two phases (high spin right arrow over left arrow low spin) when a short single laser pulse (4 ns, 532 nm) was shined on the sample.

Abstract
A number of photofunctional molecular compounds have been developed recently. Typical examples of these are phototunable valence tautomeric compounds, which are now attracting great attention. When the charge-transfer bands of some Co valence tautomeric compounds are excited at low temperature, metastable redox isomers can be created after irradiation. The lifetimes of the metastable states can be more than several hours. These transformations can involve changes in the magnetic properties of the compounds, as well as their color. Hence, these compounds can be regarded as novel photomagnetic materials. The photoresponsive behaviors of these valence tautomeric compounds are similar to those of spin-crossover complexes (light-induced excited spin-state trapping effects).

Abstract
The magnetic properties of many magnetic materials can be controlled by external stimuli. The principal focus here is on the thermal, photochemical, electrochemical, and chemical control of phase transitions that involve changes in magnetization. The molecular compounds described herein range from metal complexes, through pure organic compounds to composite materials. Most of the Review is devoted to the properties of valence-tautomeric compounds, molecular magnets, and spin-crossover complexes, which could find future application in memory devices or optical switches.
