Interaction effects in conductivity of Si inversion layers at intermediate temperatures

Crossover from Fermi liquid to multichannel Luttinger liquid in high-mobility quantum wires

We investigate the electrical conductance of long, high-mobility quantum wires formed by the split-gate technique, which allows for adjustment of the wire width and the number of one-dimensional electron subbands, n. In wires with 3<or=n<or=8, a logarithmic temperature dependence of the conductance is observed for 1<T<10 K, which reaches as much as 30% of the Drude conductance. In even narrower wires, the logarithmic dependence changes to a power-law variation. Our observations are shown to be in good agreement with recent theoretical studies, which attribute the logarithmic term to interaction effects in a weakly disordered quasi-one-dimensional conductor. This interaction correction is associated with the emergence of a crossover from a quasi-one-dimensional weakly disordered Fermi liquid to a multichannel Luttinger liquid.

Friedel oscillations, impurity scattering, and temperature dependence of resistivity in graphene

We show that Friedel oscillations (FO) in grapehene are strongly affected by the chirality of electrons in this material. In particular, the FO of the charge density around an impurity show a faster (deltarho approximately r;{-3}) decay than in conventional 2D electron systems and do not contribute to a linear temperature-dependent correction to the resistivity. In contrast, the FO of the exchange field which surrounds atomically sharp defects breaking the hexagonal symmetry of the honeycomb lattice lead to a negative linear T dependence of the resistivity.

Temperature and magnetic-field-enhanced hall slope of a dilute 2D hole system in the ballistic regime

We report the temperature (T) and perpendicular magnetic-field (B) dependence of the Hall resistivity rho(xy)(B) of dilute metallic 2D holes in GaAs over a broad range of temperature (0.02-1.25 K). The low B Hall coefficient, R(H), is found to be enhanced when T decreases. Strong magnetic fields further enhance the slope of rho(xy)(B) at all temperatures studied. Coulomb interaction corrections of a Fermi liquid (FL) in the ballistic regime can not explain the enhancement of rho(xy) which occurs in the same regime as the anomalous metallic longitudinal conductivity. In particular, although the metallic conductivity in 2D systems has been attributed to electron interactions in a FL, these same interactions should reduce, not enhance, the slope of rho(xy)(B) as T decreases and/or B increases.

Noninteracting electrons and the metal-insulator transition in two dimensions with correlated impurities

While standard scaling arguments show that a system of noninteracting electrons in two dimensions and in the presence of uncorrelated disorder is insulating, in this paper we discuss the case where interimpurity correlations are included. We find that for pointlike impurities and an infinite interimpurity correlation length, a mobility edge exists in 2D even if the individual impurity potentials are random. In the uncorrelated system we recover the scaling results, while in the intermediate regime for length scales comparable to the correlation length, the system behaves like a metal but with increasing fluctuations, before strong localization eventually takes over for length scales much larger than the correlation length. In the intermediate regime, the relevant length scale is given by the interimpurity correlation length, with important consequences for high mobility systems.
