Coulomb bicrystals of species with identical charge-to-mass ratios

Spatial configurations and temperature profiles in nonequilibrium steady state of two-species trapped ion systems

We study Coulomb crystals containing two ion species simultaneously confined in radio frequency traps and coupled to different thermal reservoirs located in two separate regions. We use a three-dimensional model to simulate the trapped bicrystal and show in a numerically rigorous manner the effects of the mass dependence of the trapping frequencies on the underlying nonequilibrium dynamics and the temperature profiles. By solving the classical Langevin equations of motion, we obtain the spatial probability densities of the two ion species and the kinetic temperature profiles across the axial direction of the trap in the nonequilibrium steady state. We analyze trapping conditions leading to bicrystals that exhibit ion conformations ranging from a linear chain of alternating ion species to two- and three-dimensional configurations. The results evidence the spatial segregation of the two ion species due to the mass dependence of the trapping frequencies and the increase of ion delocalization for heavier ion species and/or weaker trapping confinements. We also show the correlation between the increase of the temperature gradient in the bulk and this enhancement of ion delocalization through the trap.

Dynamics of two-dimensional one-component and binary Yukawa systems in a magnetic field

We consider two-dimensional Yukawa systems in a perpendicular magnetic field. Computer simulations of both one-component and binary systems are used to explore the equilibrium particle dynamics in the fluid state. The mobility is found to scale with the inverse of the magnetic field strength (Bohm diffusion), for strong fields (ωc/ωp≳1). For bidisperse mixtures, the magnetic field dependence of the long-time mobility depends on the particle species, providing an external control of their mobility ratio. At large magnetic fields, the highly charged particles are almost immobilized by the magnetic field and form a porous matrix of obstacles for the mobile low-charge particles.

Binary dusty plasma Coulomb balls

We investigated the mixing and segregation of a system consisting of two different species of particles, having different charges, interacting through a pure Coulomb potential, and confined in a three-dimensional parabolic trap. The structure of the cluster and its normal mode spectrum are analyzed as a function of the relative charge and the relative number of different types of particles. We found that (a) the system can be in a mixed or segregated state depending on the relative charge ratio parameter and (b) the segregation process is mediated by a first or second order structural phase transition which strongly influences the magic cluster properties of the system.

Noninvasive vibrational mode spectroscopy of ion Coulomb crystals through resonant collective coupling to an optical cavity field

We report on a novel noninvasive method to determine the normal mode frequencies of ion Coulomb crystals in traps based on the resonance enhanced collective coupling between the electronic states of the ions and an optical cavity field at the single photon level. Excitations of the normal modes are observed through a Doppler broadening of the resonance. An excellent agreement with the predictions of a zero-temperature uniformly charged liquid plasma model is found. The technique opens up for investigations of the heating and damping of cold plasma modes, as well as the coupling between them.

Chemical applications of laser- and sympathetically-cooled ions in ion traps

Ensembles of cold atomic and molecular ions in ion traps prepared at millikelvin temperatures by laser and sympathetic cooling have recently found considerable interest in both physics and chemistry. At very low temperatures the ions form ordered structures in the trap also known as "Coulomb crystals". Ion Coulomb crystals exhibit a range of intriguing properties which render them attractive systems for novel experiments in chemical dynamics, ultrahigh-resolution spectroscopy and quantum-information processing. In this article we review the methods used to prepare atomic and molecular ion Coulomb crystals and discuss some recent studies in mass spectrometry, low-temperature chemistry and precision spectroscopy to illustrate their scientific potential for chemical applications. Finally, we conclude with an outlook on outstanding challenges and prospective further developments in the field.

Two-dimensional binary clusters in a hard-wall trap: Structural and spectral properties

Within the Monte Carlo formalism supplemented by the modified Newton-Raphson optimization technique, we investigated structural and dynamical properties of two-dimensional binary clusters confined in an external hard-wall potential. Two species of differently charged classical particles, interacting through the repulsive Coulomb force are confined in the cluster. Subtle changes in the energy landscape and the stable cluster configurations are investigated as a function of the total number of particles and the relative number of each of the two particle species. The excitation spectrum and the normal modes corresponding to the ground-state configuration of the system are discussed, and the lowest nonzero eigenfrequency as a measure of the stability of the cluster is analyzed. The influence of the particle mass on the eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes are studied, i.e., we study a binary system of particles with different charge and different mass. Several unique features distinct from a monodisperse system are obtained.

Structure of multispecies charged particles in a quadratic trap

Multispecies interacting charged particles in a two-dimensional quadratic trap are studied. The ground-state configurations for different particle and species numbers are obtained by molecular dynamics simulation. It is found that particles with similar mass-to-charge ratio tend to populate a common shell, whose location depends on the particle mass-to-charge ratio, and that the greater the latter, the closer are the particles to the center of the trap. This scaling for the ground-state configuration is independent of the total particle and species numbers in the system.
